Space Jam: A New Legacy

I think that has less to do with Lebron and more so with how every athletes smallest move or comment is scrutinized 24/7 by the media and internet now.

I respect Jordan as an athlete but he was a known a-hole. If TMZ was around in the 90's and some of his stories leaked then, he would have had a very different perception in the public.

Not to mention LeBron's rep has improved a lot since the "decision" in 2010.

Are you kidding? Did you ever read Jordan Rules? Every single thing Jordan did was covered by the journos of the time. The difference between him and LBJ is LBJ wants the freaking attention... with his stupid twitter account and all the pop culture crap he involves himself in.

Jordan was a verrrrrry private individual and prided himself on that outside of all the marketing wheaties/nike/mcdonalds etc.. stuff he did. No matter how hard LBJ tries he'll never be or even touch the MJ persona of the 90's. He tries so hard to be likeable like someone mentioned above that he comes off so *****ey every single time. The guy isn't a horrible monster of a person or anything but if this movie were actually a concept somewhere, somehow may god have mercy on our souls.

wait......they're really making a sequel?

after all these years??

........why?

Most of the stuff Jordan did in his private life was not common knowledge or not nearly as common as it would be had there been the internet media and social media.

The gambling allegations were still quite hush hush at the time, even though many sports journos believed it played a part in his '93 retirement. You can't even compare the type of dirt that is brought up now to the pre-internet days.

Hell a story just came out a few months ago about how Jordan tried to wager the virginity of an MTV VJ over a game of cards. That type of thing would have leaked day 1 today.

I don't see how LeBron's twitter account is any more stupid than the 90% of other celebrities and sports figures and they're twitter accounts? The hate against lebron is baffling to be honest? He's cleaner than 90% of pro athletes out there and gets hated on more than them still.

The gambling thing may have been hush hush outside of Chicago (where I was living then) but it certainly was a well known commodity for anyone who followed the Bulls with any sort of interest at the time.

I rarely get involved in the player vs player debate with regards to their on court abilities. MJ's off the court persona always came of as genuine in my eyes whereas LBJ just seems manufactured to a point by him and his team to grow his brand. I never really buy some of the stuff he says or does it always seems a bit fake to me.

I respect the guy as a player but I think it's insulting how desperatly people in the media are trying to prop him up as MJ's heir... as if that position will ever really be filled.

Just re-release the original...in 3D.

This couldn't have been debunked faster if they posted it in the original article.

The sequel story comes up every few years with either Jordan or some other notable basketball player name linked to it and it's never, ever true.

With all the reboots/remakes/sequels going on these days I can see how some people could believe it but this isn't going to be one. I doubt it will ever be true.

I hate how people act like Michael Jordan's acting was what made Space Jam successful.

Pretty sure no one said that...

That can happen, but no Captain Marvel?
Honestly, it wouldn't work, conceptually. Space Jam relied on MJ's natural charisma, likeability and charm. You need a figure like that to make a Looney Toons movie work. LeBron doesn't have that.
Even with that it didn't work

Sure it did. And keep in mind, I didn't say his acting worked. I said he has charisma, likeability and charm, which MJ has always had in droves. It is what made him such a marketable player. You can be the best player in the world and if you aren't likeable, you won't be marketable (why do you think Ben Roethlisberger gets so few endorsement deals, even in the Pittsburgh area?). MJ's likeability is what gave him the ability to play off (no pun intended) the Looney Toons. A Looney Toons project doesn't require a great thespian like Ian McKellan. But it does require someone who is charismatic, charming and likeable. MJ is that. LeBron isn't.

And it's awesome. My wife and I can still watch and enjoy it to this day. It doesn't hurt that we both love Looney Tunes (especially her), we're both Tar Heels (so we both love Jordan, of course), and Bill Murray is in it.

I think they should forget about a Space Jam type of movie and do something more like the last Muppets movie.

Exactly. The original worked so well because Michael Jordan was really popular and likeable. You can't just throw any athlete into the sequel to duplicate it's success. The film seems like a product of its time. I think the Looney tunes would be better off using a different storyline.

LeBron James leads the NBA in endorsements. The executives at Samsung, Nike, Coca-cola, McDonalds must all be really stupid for associating themselves with such a PR nightmare.

I get it. You strongly dislike the guy. You think he's a *****e. I mean you actually tried to justify an analogy that, at it's core, puts him on the same level as Ben Roethlisberger as a person. Lots of people think that. On the other hand, lots of people also see him as a goofy guy that likes to have fun, but has made mistakes. Lots of people see him as a good family man that doesn't break the law. Lots of people see him as far more charismatic than Michael ever was.

The reality is LeBron has millions upon millions of fans worldwide outside of the Miami fanbase. Of course, he's more polarizing than Michael. But these extremes of "Miami fans would disagree that he is unlikable, they wouldn't if he went somewhere else" and, on the other side, "the only people who still dislike LeBron are in Cleveland" are just absurd.

Kids simply don't care. Their parents, whatever their feelings are about LeBron, are going to take them to the movie (if it ever gets made) just like any other children's movie they have no reason to care about.

IF they must do another sports themes one similar to Space Jam, I would prefer they at least do a different sport, like Looney Tunes team up with Peyton Manning for a football game.
