SPARTACUS: War of the Damned! Final Season!

I've accepted Liam as Spartacus 2.0. Sure he can never live up to Andy but I dont let that hinder my enjoyment of this series. Liam is good enough for what Spartacus is suppose to be at this moment in time.

I really enjoyed the first episode.

I particularly liked the introduction of Crassus as one of Spartacus' enemies this season. I think they created a near perfect "villain". Although as with most characters on this show, Crassus is neither "good" nor "bad".

The only slight downside was that the series feels like a bit of a sausage-fest without Ilythia, Mira and especially Lucretia to provide some interesting female characters. Naevia was great and it's incredible to see how far the character and the actor has developed since the start of season 2, but other than Saxa's brief appearances and Crassus wife and female slave who were largely silent, the ladies didn't have much to do. I'm sure that will change in future episodes though.

I also thought it was a shame that Castus wasn't introduced. As one of Spartacus' generals, I figured he would be included right from the start with a brief "backstory" about how he joined the rebellion shortly after Spartacus killed Glaber and rose quickly to be one of Spartacus' most trusted generals.

As for Julius Caesar, my understanding is that he technically was never "Emperor" of Rome since he was killed on the day that he planned to give himself that title or the Roman equivalent of such a title. Sure, the Senate had basically awarded him any number of titles, offices and powers (most as a result of manipulation and threats from Caesar) which essentially amounted to "Emperor", but he wasn't actually one of the Emperors of Rome.

As for the blonde hair, I thought that Julius Caesar was meant to be blonde. Didn't he claim to be a descendant of Venus and offered his blonde hair as proof? I thought the dark hair that he's usually portrayed with was just one of those "casting" choices to make him a more "dramatic" or "evil" character.

I absolutely loved the first episode.

Crassus is set up to be a great and smart villain with heart.

I miss the woman but for a mater of fact I know we will be introduced to two new females next episode :)

I thought the CGI looked really good. I sometimes can't believe this is just a TV Show.

I can't at people still complaining about Liam. Andy was the better actor, but what is Liam supposed to do. He is still doing a great job imo.

I met Liam by chance in London last December and he is a very lovely guy! :)

Julius Caesar was given the title Imperious Rex by the Senate which in Latin means "King". And, no, Julius Caesar was not blonde if the historians of the time are to be believed and he rarely drew attention to his hair because he was going bald at a young age, and was very self-conscious about it. He is said to have sometimes covered his hair with garland and wreaths.

As for his heritage, he was of the Julia clan which was one of the oldest Roman clans. They claimed to be descent from Iulus (Julus), son of Trojan prince Aeneas, who was supposedly the son of Venus.

Caesar and Crassus beginning to unite and hinting at the future triumvirate makes me really want that Caesar spinoff!

Second episode was a bit better, the show is hitting a better stride for mr now. Caesar interests me, I like the guy who is playing him.

I was hoping any drama between Crassus and his son would strictly be because of Caesar being around. But, maybe that slave girl will come between them too.

I did some digging as well to no avail.
Another thing, Jules Caesar looks odd, like a mix of Brad Pitt Hercules in Troy and Tony Stark for the goatee. I find his look out of place.

Yea his goatee/beard is weird looking

And what was going on with the blood scene with the slave?

I have no idea why Caesar is cast as a Californian surfer trying to break into Hollywood, but the show remains a guilty pleasure.

Either the slave was cutting him or cutting him and giving him a blow job. Odd pleasures and all that as Tiberius said.

Does Caesar have a bloodletting fetish? It's unusual for Spartacus to shy away from the graphic portrayal of sex or violence, but when a slave kneels before Caesar and uses a sharp instrument between his legs, her head obstructs everything from view. We're left baffled and slightly nauseated by imagining what could be happening down there, especially when we see the blood pooling on the ground and hear Caesar's moans of pain. Or is it pleasure? Both? Tiberius isn't the only one to think that Caesar might be a little funny in the head!

Series executive producer Steven DeKnight won't confirm or deny a fetish, but he tells TVGuide.com, "That's this little mystery thing of what the hell is going on there. You don't find out until Episode 4 what that's about. That's another thing I love about Starz. They called me up and said, 'What the hell is this? Is he into the kinky sh--?' That's what we want people to think, and then you find out a little later what that's actually about." Oh, those crazy Romans! Shaking our heads.

I thought she was giving him a circumcision, lol. :p

Second ep was alright. Liking the set up of the antagonists a great deal. This footage alone would make Batiatus squeal seeing as it was his dream.

I'm liking this take on Ceasar, but it would have been better with black hair imo. Gone are the day's of that brilliant Karl Urban portrayal of the character.

as always the budding romance is hella entertaining in this series. Seems everyone is going to be in some sort of situation soon.

I do still ask myself "where's andy" after every scene, especially after that "what have we done" scene, or that stoning scene.

I really enjoyed the second episode.

Caesar is another great villian, without being too similar to Crassus (or either Batiatus or Glaber). I'm guessing he'll look a little cleaner next episode, since Crassus finally ordered to clean himself up to look like a "proper" Roman. And I remain intrigued by whatever was going on between Caesar and the slave girl, especially after TPTB's comments indicating that it will be something unexpected.

Laeta was a decent addition, although she seemed a little too good to be true. I have to wonder whether they're setting up a somewhat "happy" ending with Laeta bearing his son and surviving the final battle. But, that's probably too similar to the Spartacus film and too "standard" for TPTB behind Spartacus who never take the expected paths in storytelling.

@ Marvin - I also miss Karl Urban's Caesar. And Cupid. And Mael. And Kor.

I like this last ep..but is it just me but are the women of the show just 'meh' now..?

And i find Caesar distracting; he looks too much like MCU Thor.

Crixus's woman is getting on my nerves...a lot.

If it's not a bloodletting fetish, is it some kind of bad STD case he's getting treated?

He could have some type of leg ulcers. Henry VIII suffered from this. Big gaping wounds. Im not sure why they would need to cut them accept maybe to drain them. I doubt it is this, but it could definitely be a health related issue.

I didn't get tonight ep. 3/4 of it was just sex and nudity.

I enjoyed it. There were really like only 2 sex scenes? One major one at that. Though Naevia...girl calm it down. I am enjoying you again and dont want to go back down that dark road of loathing.

Naevia would be less annoying if it was the original actress. Our ability to sympathize suffers with recasting. I for one just imagine the old Naevia when ever her scenes pop up and they then make alot more sense to me.

Considering we all know Caesar doesn't die in this story and DeKnight wouldn't be so bold as to change that too, I fear for whomever Caesar ends up in a physical conflict with. Someone needs to be sacrificed to him. I just hope it's glorious.

I'm liking the new air of romance sprouting in the Slave group.
