Does anyone else think that for future films, we should have villains who try to discover Spider-Man's identity, and put forth serious effort towards that as a goal? I mean, as opposed to the first three, where the villain somehow managed to discover his identity either by stumbling upon it by accident (Green Goblin and Venom) or by Peter willfully revealing it (Doc Ock).

Yeah, well, he doesn't really count. And even so, that doesn't mean that every other villain should just stumble upon and/or happen to already know Spider-Man's identity. Plus, the whole "Go after his heart and kidnap Mary Jane" thing is getting a little old.

My sentiments exactly!

Well, they do that because keeping the mask on, like they did in the first one, prevents the actor from expressing emotions facially, and that was one of the big complaints against the first movie; since both Green Goblin and Spider-Man had non-moving masks, the interaction felt wooden.

hmmm....maybe.

I totally dissagree with you on all counts. The mask works just fine for me. His reasons for wearing the mask in the first place is to protect his secret identity! By protecting his identity he also protects not only his friends and loved ones, but his own neck as well. Taking your logic (*and Sam's*) into account, we may as well entitle the next Spider-Man installment with the following possible titles:
1) "The Amazing Peter Parker"
2) "Peter and Mary"
3) "Parker Strikes Again"
4) "Puny Parker 4"
Anyway, the mask "IS" Spider-Man! One of the most iconic and coolest looking designs on the planet. If you want to witness emotion then you have plenty (*actually, way too many*) sappy scenes between Peter and Mary Jane. If that isn't enough then rent out a dvd copy of "Gone With The Wind". The lack of imagination on some of these boards is unbelievable.

They absolutely should keep it on during action scenes, no doubt about that. They need to use the "loss of mask" ploy a lot more sparingly before everyone who watches the movie starts to wonder why he does put his mask on a little more securely. But trying to convey any emotion at all with that mask on... it's virtually impossible.

That said, when his mask is knocked off when Venom hits him with the big metal thing... that was a little ridiculous. His mask was already ripped, and it wasn't exactly a moment where he needed Oscar-worthy acting. Plus, it didn't even make sense that that would make his mask come off. His mask was already ripped enough for the purposes of that dialogue.

You can just picture Sam Raimi directing on the set: "OK, and in this shot, we're going to have Spider-man swinging into the...Hmmmm. You know what? Let's get that mask off. Yeah, we'll get the mask off, just have like a kitten snatch it off from a window or something, we'll CGI that later, OK, and so then we'll-"

"Um, sir, in the previous scene we just had him put the mask back on, after fighting a 15 minute action sequence with it off."

"Oh, yes...that's right. I forgot all about that. Alright, well ****. That ruins everything. When is the next time the mask is coming off? I'm going to my trailer. Let me know when the ****ing mask is off."
