Comics Spidey Book Sales (ASM +)

Wow, I'm shocked to see Uncanny X-Men as a top 10 book. I thought those days were long gone, but then I don't normally follow sales, so I guess I could be wrong.

Courtesy of ICV2, here's the actual sales estimates. Once again, it doesn't include newsstand or subscription sales.

And, to answer Spidermanfan, UCSM comes it at #24. The only solo adventurer that comes in above ASM is Green Lantern. I don't know what GL's subscription numbers are, but you can add another 40,000 in subscriptions and 3,000 in news stand sales and you've got a pretty good idea of what ASM is selling. I think GL Corps, New Avengers, and Uncanny X-Men are the only comics above ASM that are subscribable (and probably have any news stand presence). So, in terms of actual sales, ASM probably hits somewhere in the top 5. Although sales, overall, for superhero titles are a shadow of the past, Marvel's strategy to go with ASM thrice monthly and to re-boot the franchise with BND seems to have been a decent business strategy. The Ultimate re-boot, however, has not necessarily been good for USM/UCSM. But, we need to get past issue #10 to see where that title is heading.

The November top 10 is out early. None of the Spidey books made the list and DC nailed seven of the top ten spots with Blackest Night. Somehow, I suspect "Blackest Night" will be followed by the event sequel "Darkest Day," to be followed by "Darkest Dawn," and the ever-popular "Darkest Twilight." DC has to milk this cow for all it's worth! You also have to wonder whether Bruce Wayne's return will be delayed in the face of Batman & Robin's sales. Though, everything Morrison touches seem to turn to gold these days, so as long as they keep him on a Bats book, all should be well. The actual numbers and longer list should be out shortly.

Here's the top 40, indexed. ASM clocks in at 13, 14, and 15. UCSM continues to drop and hits the 36 spot. Green Lantern, Flash, and Batman are the only solo hero titles that outperform ASM. DC is really kicking it with the utterly incomprehensible Blackest Night. ASM is doing quite well, all things considered.

If I were Marvel, tho, I might be worried by the fact that DC seems to have nailed the tpb/hc market, while Marvel only makes an occasional appearance. I think that may be the future of comics: digital monthlies and then tpbs/hcs in published form.

Aloha,
You know you and I see eye to eye on most of the issues regarding the future of comics. I would agree that hc and trades will certainly be the way of the near future for comics as well as digital monthlies. It just makes sense. Why spend the money on producing monthlies in comic book form when you can sell the comic in digital form as single issues and then sell the complete mini series or arc in trade and HC. Like I said, HC are going to become a collectible comic book field and trades are going to replace single issue comics. This will also raise the value of single issue back issue comic books because of their rarity. The future is now.

ASM clocks in at 13, 14, and 15.

And 17! :)

Maybe it was just a slow month, but it seems to me that Ben Reilly skyrocketed Spider-Man sales in October....

So, the #1 Comic of the past decade (2000-2009) was (drum roll please) ASM 583, the Spidey/Obama team up. Civil War and killing Cap. America both moved a lot of books. Batman also fares well in his various guises. One thing thats pretty clear from the charts, events and solid creative teams really matter. DC should should be paying Grant Morrison a load of cash. As for single books, a glance over the list suggests that ASM and Batman appear more frequently than any other titles. No big surprise, as they are DC & Marvel's flagship characters. I need to do a more in depth review of the list, however, In any event, it will be interesting to see how the new decade shapes up.

So, here's the preliminary numbers for December from Diamond. Marvel dominates, but DC scores better in the top ten comic books and owns the tpbs, hbs. Darkest Night/Blackest night and the tie-ins are really helping DC. A bit later, the top 100 will be out. As for now, it's just the top 10 (with no actual numbers). ASM does not fall in the top 10. Cap. America and the Dark & New Avengers are the only Marvel books in the top 10. Cap has really been getting the job done for Marvel lately. Batman, who is generally the go-to guy for DC, has been overshadowed by GL since Blackest Night started.

And here's the top 30. To put ASM in context, only three single hero adventures, Green Lantern, Cap, and Batman, sold more copies than ASM. Everything else was Blackest Everything (incuding a Flash and Wonder Woman edition) related or team books (Avengers, etc). If subscription sales are included, ASM probably falls in at around #3 for its top placement and only one comic (Blackest Night) managed to break the 100,000 mark.

Spidey is now in the upper 50's to low 60's typically.

Sad how far the flagship title has fallen, and i still often wonder how the sales would be if they hadn't made their title character so devisive??

I am personally not sure why devisive reboots like Clone Sage and OMD/BND are ever even attempted, because you lose more long term fans than new "young ones" gained, and some never come back. Thinning your hair isn't all that it is cracked up to be!

Happy New year farmie...

Your post is rather a rather typical spin doctor maneuvre for the anti-Spider-direction people to jump on...

Yes, in this particular month, Spidey is selling in the low 60's and really upper 50's... and you say that those numbers aren't good for Spider-Man.... yet the #10 book sold at 68k, and that was a BIG EVENT tie-in, and a #1 to boot... ASM is neither a tied to big event nor is it at #1, so I would say that that ASM selling at about about 10% to 15% less than a TOP TEN book 3 times per month appears rather successful...

But you'll see it in a different light... :cwink:

Cheers...

:yay:

Hey!

Happy New Years TMOB! (and all!)

(haven't been on here in awhile!)

Sorry, not trying to spin the numbers, honestly.

I am mostly sad they're this low now, and i know people across many forums place the blame on all sorts of things, and various opinions as to why and etc. Regardless, the creative types once predicted them not to dip below 80's.

And despite my dislike for the OMD/BND reboot, i am still a giant spidey fan at heart, have been my whole life, and don't want to see them (the comics) do poorly, per say.

nice to chat with ya again! TMob!

So, we've got the top 10 comics for January. ASM takes the 6th position. GL, Cap, and Batman & Robin are the only single hero (well, & Robin) books to rank higher in sales than ASM. GL is a "Blackest Night" tie in and Cap is the special "Return of Steve Rogers" series. We should have the actual numbers in another week or so. I have to say, I personally have enjoyed the Fred Van Lente and Joe Kelly work the best as of late.

^ ???? I would have expected a "gimmick" issue to jump up that much, but there's nothing all that unique about that issue. 'Tis surprising....

It did have 3 variants as opposed to the one variant that some issues have been getting...

ASM slots in at #s 6, 14, and 17. And USM ranks at 32. Here's the top 50 for January:

Maybe not....

Farmernudie is Dan Slott.
He's been treating our feelings on these comics (Positive or Negative) like a big ol prank for all these years.

http://forums.comicbookresources.com/sh ... 83&page=51

Make what you will of it.
I feel violated. Chiming in a few times would be a joke, but this is just sick and disturbing. He has contributed more to this site and CBR than even I have.

Can't say I didn't put myself out there, but I figured he was an honest person. So I trusted him. hah

This really makes me sad that someone could do something like this for so long.

Anyways I just thought you guys would like to know. Sorry I've been away for so long! I had family and personal problems to take care of so I couldn't make it online that often. Good to be back!

The real irony here is that his writing as Farmernudie is alot better than his writing on Spidey. Big Ups Dan.

I just read this as well.

While I personally don't care that he had a separate screen name, and assumed he did, to play off the people who are upset about OMD in mockery was completely tasteless. While I didn't like the new Spider-Man direction, I never had any problems with Dan Slott himself, having been such a fan of the Initiative as I was, but this really makes me think less of him. This kinda puts him in the same category as Quesada for me, a Marvel employee who mocks fans who doesn't agree with him, and due to that I highly doubt I'll care as much about anything he writes from here on out because obviously he doesn't give a lick about fans who disagree with him to the point to where he'll go out of his way to mock them. My only regret is that this came out a week after Mighty Avengers finished, or I'd have no problem dropping that book. I was only hanging onto it for my love of Young Avengers and because I liked Dan Slott. Stature wasnt enough to keep me on her own though.

Upstanding guy there, Dan

Dear Lord,
I am NOT farmernudie.

Did ANYONE read the actual post?
It was on a thread arguing whether people abuse their anonymity by hiding behind screen names-- and if we should all start using our real names instead (like myself, Steve Wacker, Mark Waid, Kurt Busiek, and others do.)

As a JOKE I outed myself as TWO different screen names (farmernudie and whiteshark), BOTH of whom are ACTUALLY real people (one who is NOT enjoying the current SPIDER-MAN title, and the other who is a HUGE fan of the book).

The following couple of posters IMMEDIATELY spotted it as a joke and had fun with it. And both farmernudie and whiteshark were good sports about it. I did one or two more posts to keep the gag going-- and it KINDA showed one of my points-- that it COULD be ANYONE behind a screen name.

Some people came to the table late (like people who turned on Orson Welles' WAR OF THE WORLD'S broadcast WITHOUT hearing the disclaimer) and this thing has spread to other web-sites.

Here's the thing:
It's INSANE. Both of these guys (farmernudie and whiteshark) have been posting on CBR for YEARS and MANY, MANY OTHER SITES AS WELL. If I HAD been these TWO POSTERS while doing my OWN posts as well... There's NO WAY the timing could've worked out AT ALL. I obviously would NEVER have slept, taken ANY vacations, or had ANY time to do my frickin' JOB! Anyone with common sense would've figured this out. Oy.

The sad thing is, farmernudie likes going to a site that is (on the whole) VERY negative about the current SPIDER-MAN book, and now all of his fellow posters there have effectively shunned him because he's having a HELLUVA time convincing them that he's NOT me. I've profusely apologized to farmernudie and he has GRACIOUSLY accepted. (Thank God!) But c'mon, people. Can we all put 2 and 2 together and come up 4 already. Jesus.

I want this poor guy to have his internet-life back and happily go back to his regular bashing sessions about ASM with his regular bashing buddies. Instead of BEING the one who's gettin' bashed! He's a nice guy-- married, works in the medical field, likes Calvin & Hobbes, reads lots of Marvel Comics, and likes dishing on why he thinks my book sucks. I did NOT make him up out of the ether. Can we all give him a break?

Jeez, JewishHobbit, next time can you take a sec to read the posts and follow the thread a little before you start spreading personal judgments like "Upstanding guy there, Dan :down" around? :csad:

Most people got the gag.
