Spielberg Directing Roald Dahl Adaptation 'BFG'

I don't think he'll do that.

Yeah. He didn't change the location of War Horse, he remained true to the story's location and time period.

If Spielberg does end up directing BFG, it'll likely be based in the UK... or filmed in America with UK actors.

It's actually "Big, Flaming Gays".

Which, I believe, will be quite a different film than most are used to seeing from Spielberg. :o

Steven Spielberg’s The BFG gets a release date

We’ve not heard from Steven Spielberg since 2012′s Lincoln and his adaptation of Robopocalypse has been put on indefinite hold, but we now know the release dates of his next two movies, including his live-action adaptation of Roald Dahl’s beloved book The BFG.

First up is Spielberg teaming up with Tom Hanks (Captain Philips) in an untitled Cold War thriller based on the real-life story of James Donovan, who was sent on a next-to-impossible mission to negotiate the release of a captured American U-2 pilot by the CIA. It may not have a title, but it will hit cinemas on October 16th 2015.

After that, Spielberg will be helming the live-action version of The BFG, which is set for release on July 1st 2016, tells the fantastical story of a Big Friendly Giant who befriends a young orphan girl. Dreamworks acquired the rights to the book in 2011 with Kathleen Kenedy and Frank Marshall set to produce. With the pair now busy with everything Star Wars, the movie will be overseen by Michael Siegel and John Madden (who was lined to direct the movie at one point).

The book, originally released in 1982 with artwork by Quentin Blake, was first brought to the big screen in the 1989 animated classic The BFG which featured David Jason voicing the titular giant.

Nice with Roald Dahl stuff.
Let's just hope he cast a talented actress for as the girl.

What about the giant? Would Vinnie Jones work?

The BFG
Steven Spielberg's upcoming live-action film adaptation of the Roald Dahl children's classic "The BFG" has scored its first release date. The movie is said to be targeting a July 22nd 2016 release worldwide, which puts it up against Guy Ritchie's "King Arthur" project.
In a statement, Spielberg says: "It is fitting that the UK is the first international country to announce the date of The BFG, a story that sprang from the imagination of this proud son from Wales. We at DreamWorks Studios hope our film will add to Roald Dahl's prolific legacy of entertainment." [Source: Empire]

There has been like ... one good adaption of this guys books so far. I have little hope for this.

It's hard to get Roald Dahl's style but so far there's been 3 good films out of his books (Willy Wonka (1971), Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (2005), Fantastic Fox) and 3 mediocre (James and the Giant Peach, The Witches, Matilda). None have been terrible.

As a reader of his books I want a good adaption not just a good film.

Those two things are rarely mutually exclusive.

I agree with Tanin. I'm shocked at how people love Wes Anderson's Fantastic Mr. Fox, because it doesn't convey the delightful book I read growing up or its fun spirit.

Because people can separate the two different mediums. I thought Fantastic Mr Fox was very charming.

I like all the adaptations of Dahl's books...

You're never gonna get a full on straight adaptation of any of his work, it wouldn't translate. Even the most auteur of directors had to take a couple liberties.

I like all the adaptations of Dahl's books...

So do I. But they often have the wrong tone or miss the whole point of the book. Doesn't mean they aren't fun.

I'm not Chickenscratch.. I can separate the two mediums. I just wish they could get one movie right for once is all.

Ah, I see. That's a fair point. :)

What about Danny, the Champion of the World movie?

I'm still holding out for The TWITS movie.

You're not living the life fantastic!

Spielberg Changing "BFG," Open To "West Side"

By Garth Franklin Saturday August 9th 2014 12:25PM
Following his upcoming Cold War era thriller starring Tom Hanks, filmmaker Steven Spielberg is set to tackle the film adaptation of the Roald Dahl children's classic "The BFG".
Film Divider has posted a report indicating that the director is set to make a few changes to the book, starting with the leading character Sophie now going to a boarding school rather than an orphanage.
There's several new characters too including a pair of scientists who debate over whether or not giants exist. Sophie also has a new best friend in the film. It's hoped the changes won't disrupt the spirit of the tale.
Spielberg also made an appearance alongside Oprah Winfrey on ABC News this week to promote the release of "The Hundred-Foot Journey". During the TV chat he was asked about some quite old rumors now that he's developing a new film adaptation of the classic musical "West Side Story". He confirms he's still considering it:
"Well you know something, West Side Story is one of my favourite Broadway musicals and one of the greatest pieces of musical literature, my goodness, one of the greatest scores and some of the greatest lyrics ever written for a musical so just let me put it this way: it’s on my mind."

Well you kinda have to expand it a little for a two hour film. The beard don't make changes for the sake.

Those changes don't seem too bad.
