Spielberg Directing Roald Dahl Adaptation 'BFG'

How am I only hearing about this now? This is fantastic news. I love The BFG. One of Dahl's best.

It's hard to get Roald Dahl's style but so far there's been 3 good films out of his books (Willy Wonka (1971), Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (2005), Fantastic Fox) and 3 mediocre (James and the Giant Peach, The Witches, Matilda). None have been terrible.

I'd put Willy Wonka (1971) and The Witches in the good category, and the rest in the mediocre.

I think Willy Wonka and The Witches were the only two that really captured the spirit of the books they were adapting, even with some of the changes they did, while still being good movies. Whereas Burton's one was closer to the book than the 70's movie, it lacked the charm and fun factor that the 70's one had. Gene Wilder was a much better Wonka than Depp. The children were all much more delightfully nasty like the book versions. The Veruca Salt in the 70's movie would have had Burton's one for breakfast.

Mark Rylance To Play "The BFG"

By Garth Franklin Monday October 27th 2014 08:09AM
Tony and Olivier award-winning actor Mark Rylance has been cast as the benevolent giant title character in the Steven Spielberg-directed "The BFG" for DreamWorks Studios and Disney Pictures.
An adaptation of Roald Dahl's 1982 children's novel, the story follows a young girl, the Queen of England and the BFG, who set out on an adventure to capture the evil, man-eating giants who have been invading the human world.
Melissa Mathison adapted the script and Spielberg will shoot the project in early 2015 ahead of a July 1st 2016 release. Rylance is currently working with Spielberg on the Tom Hanks-led Cold War spy thriller "St. James Place".

How delightfully unexpected.

That is one hell of a coup getting Rylance. Mark Rylance is one of the most critically acclaimed stage actors working today.

Never heard of this actor, but I trust Spielberg's casting choice.

Disney's The BFG - Teaser Trailer

Very Spielberg. That is how you cut a trailer.

I assume this is yet another of the 29 trailers that will be shown before Star Wars.

I'll definitely check this out for the Spielberg/Dahl combination alone, even though BFG was one of the few major Dahl books I never got around to reading.

Looks great! And it's good to see Spielburg using Mark Rylance again after he was so good in Bridge of Spies.

I love Spielberg so much.

Good to see The Beard do some lighter stuff again. I loved War Horse, Lincoln and Bridge of Spies, but this is the kind of stuff I love most from Spielberg.

I just hope the BFG looks good. I hate when they go with full CGI giants and don't try a mix of practical actors plus enhancements like they did in Deathly Hallows II. I got a major "Jack the Giant Slayer" vibe from this giant, and would love if he was a little bit more realistic.

But I'm sure I'll still love this flick either way.

^ I dig Hook. It never comes together in the way it's trying to, but I still think it's super fun.

I think CG works for things like giants because they're not humans, they're monsters with ambiguously human traits.

Teaser was like a big benevolent Voldemort visits the set of Hook

Great trailer. This trailer made me wish if he hadn't wanted stupid animation, he would have been the ideal Harry Potter director. I got serious HP vibes from that trailer.
