Ubisoft Star Wars: Outlaws

So I'm close to 20 hours on this game and honestly? Having a lot of fun. I'm not even the worlds biggest Star Wars fan, but it's just a nice, immersive space scoundrel game.

The one thing I would say is, don't go in expecting this to be Star Wars Assassins Creed. Really I would say it's a lot more like Uncharted in an immersive open world setting. The Star Wars feel is fantastic though and I really enjoy moving around the world.

But yeah, some of the reviews I've seen mention the combat and stealth being boring and I'm just like... It's fine? Very simple and straight forward but I guess I don't see that as the problem others do? Personally, I wonder if some people were really expecting combat on par with like, Jedi Fallen Order or something? Or a full on stealth sim? But like, Kay Vess is clearly not a Jedi and she's not a master assassin. She's an amateur thief slowly trying to make her way up in the world of crime and so the gameplay totally fits that fantasy for me.

Stealth is super basic (Think Uncharted) with some simple enemy distraction abilities. But mostly it's kinda clumsy to start and you'll get spotted and have to shoot your way out a bit. But to me, that kinda feels like a classic Han Solo type scenario anyway, right? Like you wouldn't call Han stealthy? So yeah, Stealth is fine to me (and you do learn new abilities later that help make it a bit more exciting).

Combat I was just fine on initially, but it really unlocked for me when I realised it's way more fun to just go full on swashbuckler haha. I was trying to be tactical and cover shooter originally, but now I'm climbing up stuff and jumping down to punch out storm troopers, shooting barrels, etc. It's quite fun. Still simple, yes, but it's FUN. I really like feeling like I'm just a normal human in the Star Wars universe. You get jumped by 4 or more Stormtroopers, it's as scary as it kinda should be? A huge beast runs at you, you run away because you just have a blaster haha

Anyway, really enjoying it!

All I expected from this videogame is for the open world to be fully explorable, and to look as amazing as previous Ubisoft games.

Ubisoft games aren't best known for their combat. Even the Assassins Creed games with 100 plus tree skill weren't amazing when it comes to fighting hundreds of enemies. Stealth for a Star Wars game also imo, is a good option to have but this isn't Assassins Creed, Hitman and Metal Gear Solid. So I don't know why some were expecting a stealth game out of this.

I can see there has been the usual backlash on this in the usual places, but it seems fans are enjoying it?

I don't have a PS5 yet but this is on my list for when I do get one.

Haven’t played for long, but I like it so far. I like the premise and the free-roam. Also being a smuggler instead of a Jedi, for once, is really nice.

The stealth/combat does feel rather clunky though… Also went into a syndicate territory to get some treasures, got caught while going in stealthy and those mofo’s just kept coming without end. Pretty sure I killed a whole planet’s worth. Didn’t like that at all, since it really forces stealth that way.

How big is the open world? And how is the loading when you go to another planet? :dm1:

I think that evolves in a few interesting ways. One of those is you'll eventually get a range of new stealth tactics or gear with buffed stats that can make stealth a bit more interesting or strategic. Another is, the higher your reputation with certain syndicates, the more areas they'll give you access to. So there can be an advantage to gaining their trust to get more access... THEN rob them blind.

But also I think it feels clunkier at the beginning because they want you to feel inexperienced at the start, in a world of scary gang members. Those first two Pyke and Crimson Dawn territories felt so hectic to me the first time I went in there, but later realised that those were the MAIN headquarters of the two factions in that system, so it makes sense.

I think the best way to play is just give into the roleplay aspect. Assume you're going to have low rep for a little while with most factions and feel a little underpowered to jump straight into these things, but it definitely opens up and gets better.

Personally, I really appreciate the way they've done it in this game compared to other Ubisoft games where content is just locked behind a power level? It's so immersion breaking to be like "Oh I can't kill these 5 guys because they're level 50". Whereas here it's like "Oh I probably can't smoothly waltz into the Pyke HQ and pick their vault clean, because I'm basically a baby thief and this is an entire intergalactic crime syndicate."

That should guarantee a sequel, right? But its a licensed game so who knows.

It also doesn't help that Ubisoft is working on so many games. If you look at their upcoming games, they have at least 12 games that are announced...

The EA Fallen Order Star Wars games sold better and perhaps the market was sated by them already (plus better reviews and Jedi popular concept).

I feel like an open world Star Wars videogame from Ubisoft would have been so popular in 2010 to 2018. It doesn't help the fact that there have been so many Star Wars games in the last ten years, especially with 2 Star Wars Jedi games that are semi-open world videogames.

I'm kinda shook that both and the Avatar Ubisoft game performed worse (sales wise) than Watch Dogs Legion. Ubisoft is definitely earning less, because those two are licensed games unlike Watch Dogs.

About the only game series Ubisoft has that is guaranteed to make them any money is the Assassin's Creed games.

I'm not. The words "ubisoft" and "open world" haven't been synonymous with a quality gaming experience in 10-15 years. People are over the ubislop formula. It doesn't matter which coat of paint it's wearing.

10 to 15 years is a bit much.

Assassin's Creed: Black Flag
Watch Dogs 2
Assassin's Creed: Odyssey

Are above average videogames.
