Steven Spielberg and Javier Bardem to take on Montezuma and Cortez

Ever since Schindler's List Spielberg's historic films have been far better than his action films, so I hope he keeps doing them.

He is no longer the same director he was when he was doing Jaws, Raiders, Jurassic Park, etc. He's still great (Lincoln might be my favorite of all his films), but he's different.

Which great civilization wasn't? What the Spanish did to them and others in S.America was genocide. Everyone is guilty. :o

I did like Apocalypto.

It was genocide, but you're talking about people who sacrificed hundreds of thousands of prisoners by ripping their f***ing hearts out. Regardless of what they believed, they were far from innocent victims.

I never said they were victims. I think they were both equally ****ed up. I'm still in awe of how advanced they were for their time.

You ever been to the pyramid of the sun? Amazing.

OK, this has my interest. Hopefully it'll deliver. And I liked Apocalypto too.

I was thinking of this old Tyrone Power movie called "The Captain from Castille," which is set during Cortez's campaign, and while that film preferred to ignore both sides atrocities, it didn't change just how fascinating the setting was.

And really, the best way to do this is as the honest clash of of two empires, one at the height of its powers and with the population and infrastructure on its home-turf (the Americas as a whole were incredibly populace before some kind of plague devastated most people groups, which is why the other Europeans had an easier time establishing themselves) and the other an ambitious and fervent interloper hungry for new fortune and fame.

Cortez's character had better be well-fleshed out in the script. The guy was like Julius Caesar (in his darkest moments) but with insane luck and opportunities on his side. And the ambitious madness of burning your own fleets to make sure your men fight for you is a defining character moment.

I'm really looking forward to this. It's a very interesting part of history, and Spielberg could do something really great filmmaking out of it.

I'm always up for exploring new bits of history that are under represented in cinema. Hollywood too easily gets stuck into ruts in regards to this.

I kind of think that this movie should be rated R. This is that kind of story.

Spielberg only goes out of his PG-13 realm if the story is that hardcore, like Schindler's List and Amistad, so he'll probably go that route unless it's released in like summer where they want it to be a blockbuster for all ages.

Cortez's conquest of Mexico isn't a "for all ages" story. In fact, NOTHING about either the Aztecs or the Spanish Conquistidors are "for all ages." To try and make it so would be to do the actual story a great disservice and injustice.

It needs to be like a cross between Lincoln and Saving Private Ryan(yes, I want to actually SEE the conquest and that means a war movie).

Idris Fasserbatch :o

I can't see this movie getting made. I don't think the Western world (cough America) will be interested. Sadly.

I don't know what's up with Speilberg but I think he's just winding down. I know he's been very active with Jurassic World. Now when you see Spielberg's name as a producer, it meant something in the 80's. Now it's just a paycheck (Transformers) but for whatever reason, he's been very involved with Jurassic World. Maybe he's just nurturing Colin Tremorow.

Being in his late 60's, I think Spielberg knows he'll have to be more selective from this point on, so that's why he's so wishy washy lately.

Yeah, I too don't see this project being lifted off the ground. :(

There's a part of me who wishes he would return to his roots and make another family movie. But then again, he's not the same director 30-40 years ago. Not to say he's bad not, he's just different.

To be honest, if this is a straight-up drama, I won't be that interested. If it's something like SPR where there was drama and loads of action, then I'd be more interested. Especially since Spielberg is at the helm.

I hope he goes back to his blockbuster roots and makes more action movies. I'm sure things like Lincoln and War Horse were good, but I want him to make more big budget action movies.

Even Warhorse was a very uneven but beautiful film. There's scenes where French people are speaking English, but their English is so bad and flat that their scenes should've been just filmed in French. Stuff like that.

And Indy 4 broke my heart.

I think he has another Minority Report type film in him.

I'm probably in a small camp in enjoying his recent blockbusters like War of the Worlds, Indy 4, and Tintin.

I thought Minority Report was great but then the forced happy ending happened. It'd be cool for him to have another Cruise collab. I liked it a lot, and it's a sci-fi classic, but I wouldn't consider it as one of his family classics like Indiana Jones and ET.

I really think his family classic days are over.

I did like Tintin, though the issue with the movie is the overall story. I loved the world they he created and the quirkiness of the dialogue but the plot was forgettable.
