The Superhero Cinematic Civil War of Tomorrow Thread - Part 62

I am okay with Red Skull being behind a lot of major world events. I dont think the theatrical does a great job emphasizing this, but the DC shows that the entire movie is about Captain America having failed that mission, Red Skull is still alive and he never stopped his evil, and being disillusioned with his own failure and finding a reason to fight in a world vastly different from his own. The arc and scenes with Steve in the movie are so much better thanks to the way its structured and paced. It's much more a focus in this version, as opposed to the OG movie which is more like a campy superhero movie, but cheap. Here, it plays more like a guy who was going to be a hero, but failed and had to learn to move forward in order to be the guy he was supposed to be. I actually thought this version was good, outside the cheapness which wasnt Pyun's fault since he had little resources.

Just to illustrate how different these cuts are, the theatrical movie ends with Red Skull threatening to detonate a bomb, Cap plays the piano music on something and then hits him with the shield, which then hits his daughter who is gonna shoot him on the way back, Cap says "Heads up" and then grabs shield, looks at camera, and walks off screen. Then President narrates to a still image

This ends completely different

Here, Cap and Red Skull fight but the fight is intercut with clips from their WWII fight Cap loses. Remembering that loss propels Cap to overpower Red Skull, who retreats to the piano. Which in this version, he stares at several times but won't play cause of the night he was taken. Here, he has a look like he knows his time is almost over. So he sits at the piano and plays the song from the night he was taken while his daughter watches him and Cap looks on. Then he tells his daughter he loves her, raises gun to kill Cap, and Cap hits him and sends him off the cliff. Then Cap walks off with Sharon while Red Skul's daughter looks over the cliff. Then a montage of Cap and Sharon being at the beach plays while the President narration comes on

The new ending to this works so much better. Plays great with the new structure, is a great character beat and gives this movie something since it didn't have much in the realm of action. It's just a better movie.

Finished the DC for Captain America 1990. The action scenes are still fairly shoddy looking and obviously cheap. But it's obvious that the director was aware of the limitations. This movie is very different pacing wise and in how the story plays out. The cut we all grew up with plays out linearly, while this one is then Present Day focused with flashbacks at strategic places back to WWII. I think this approach largely works better for the film, though some flashbacks don't entirely work even still. There are also a fair amount of character scene that give the movie actual themes and showcase Cap's struggle being out of time much better.

In the end, this is still a cheap movie. Nothing changes that this ain't Batman 89 or a Reeve Superman movie. But for what it is, this DC version achieves what they tried to do a lot better. It's much more competent. It is also clear the director was a fan of the character and tried with this movie. Glad thus finally saw the light of day

Wait, not the one starring...

I will definitely be watching this soon, thanks for sharing, SF!!! :cap:

I just finished the Captain America DC and I.... quite enjoyed it.

I never watched the original 1990's cut for whatever reason, and yeah this was made on a shoestring budget (how the hell did they afford Ned Beatty?) and the fight scenes were laughable but I actually really liked it. Especially the costuming and how they built up Red Skull. Would've been fun to see it connected in the same universe as Corman's FF.

@Spider-Fan for a second there, I thought the woman playing Sharon Carter was Missy Hyatt. :o

Dude, there is a universe where those movies cross over with Dolph Punisher and maybe Full Moon Doctor Strange (which in our universe became Doctor Mordrid Master of the Unknown cause they lost the rights to Doctor Strange right before filming and they just changed all the names).

I also would have been curious to have seen Canon's Spider-Man they were going to do next but abandoned when Superman IV and Masters of the Universe flopped.

But I am glad this saw the light of day. I grew up with the OG version of this movie and rented it many times cause us Marvel fans didn't get many movies before Blade. I had no idea about how it was messed with in post until that Canon documentary that came out years ago. It's a shame that this wasn't the version we got in the first place, but that's just how Golan was.

Can't post due to language, but I just randomly stumbled across a video of Teri Hatcher roasting what has become of Dean Cain (while also calling Rachel Brosnahan fabulous and perfect) and it was delightful. 10/10 Totally Recommend.

What i like about the dr strange movies is that character growth is done subtle, through him observing and growing through experience. In the 2nd one, he was still willing to kill people for the greater good, but after being treated coldly by Christine, the avengers and seeing what the other Dr strange did to his world, he learned and put faith in the character America to own her powers, instead of sacrificing her. In the first one, observing others and the sacrifice of the ancient one got him to where he he was in iw, endgame and was for lots of multiverse of madness. Speeches are not made, he learns and changes in a subtle way and you may need to watch twice to learn why he changed.

At least that is my experience :)

PM it to me please!

I know nobody asked me, but this is my favorite version of the intro for BTAS:

An assortment of random clips taken from different episodes, or this?

I think I know which one I’m going with. :oldrazz:

Now, if we’re talking really great alternative DCAU cartoon intros using episode clips, I present exhibit A:

Uses various clips but in a way that makes sense by giving a bit of a flavor of each character’s world and rogues gallery, while also overlaying it with great use of simplified striking iconography, silhouettes and negative space. Sums up and tells you everything you need to know about Batman and Superman in just a single minute.

One of my favorite cartoon intros of all time and I’m surprised hardly anybody talks about it.

You’re definitely not wrong my friend.

I just really like the parts in the intro I posted when Catwoman and Harley fight him to the music. :o

I also believe she said this before reports of just how well recruitment is going... (half of applicants can't pass an open book test and, well, physical standards are lowered)

Tangentally related to the upcoming X-men reboot...

Men do not understand the history of the **** the are fans of.

I think Batman :TAS is the better show overall, but the best Slade episodes.of Teen Titans are better than any batman episode imo. He was a great creepy, intense, psychological villain.
I especially like the episode where Robin sees Slade stalking and taunting him, which turns out just to be an illusion.

It gave us great scenes like this.

Just Starfire’s reaction to Robin losing it and grabbing her arm (“You’re hurting me.”) and tearing up at his angry outburst. It’s so uncomfortable and unlike how we’ve seen the characters before up to this point, being in such a vulnerable place.
