{TB EXCLUSIVE} WARNER BROS. OFFERS CHRISTOPHER NOLAN THE HELM OF “READY PLAYER ONE”
Donna Whitehead said:
Warner Bros. has made an offer to Christopher Nolan to direct their sci-fi adventure film READY PLAYER ONE. Adapted by Zak Penn from the novel by Ernest Cline (with previous drafts by Cline and Eric Eason), the 20-minutes-into-the-future film follows a teenage boy who enters into an elaborate treasure hunt to win the fortune that was left behind in the will of the creator of his favorite virtual reality game, Oasis. He finds himself up against powerful corporations and competitors who will stop at nothing to get the inheritance. Donald De Line is producing through his De Line Pictures, alongside Dan Farah.

Honestly this would a strange project for him. It's like if Nolan directed Scott Pilgrim. Ready Player One is a very geeky film, and it's proud of being geeky.

Whilst I love Nolan this would certainly put me on edge. Only because we haven't see him tackle something like this and with his rep as the dark, moody, real guy we have no idea how this would turn out. Plus I'd really rather see a more Memento/Prestige style Nolan film again.

This sounds like a film that needs to be embrace it's ridiculousness. This story as a whole just doesn't ring true.

This sounds more like an Edgar Wright type of film to me. Asking Nolan is like asking Woody Allen to direct Batman. Ok, maybe not that extreme but still...

This is like the tenth time I've seen that statement today. I've never read the book, but I've eyed it a lot. If Nolan is directing I'll hold off reading it, but I'm very curious about what makes it more suitable for Edgar Wright as opposed to Nolan.

Trust me, this is down Edgar's alley. There so much geek stuff that could make Wil Wheton blush. You'll need someone who's ingrained into that culture.

His visual style, awesome references both subtle and in your face, growing up in the 80's as a geek, the quick fire fun of his films. It's pretty much perfect. The only issue is is that he just signed for 2 other projects and this may be a little too similar for his liking to SPVTW.

I can't see Nolan wanting to direct a movie about MMOs and endless references to the soundtrack of Ladyhawk.

It would probably be altered significantly if Nolan were to direct.

Sword Art Online (similar concept) is more akin to Nolan and even that's out there.

I don't want this to happen. It's not a good match for both Nolan and the film. It will either end up not feeling like the book or not feeling like a Nolan film. It would be like if Christopher Miller and Phil Lord directed Fahrenheit 451.

Well having read these posts can't me in the camp that doesn't want Nolan to direct this.

Really I want Nolan to return to small films for a bit, but I guess that isn't going to happen anytime soon.:(

Yeah, why would anyone want Nolan to make a film that pushes him outside his comfort zone? :o I'm nowhere near being a Nolan fanboy, but I hope he takes it, dude's talented, but it'd be nice to see him lighten the f***up and let loose.

actually wanted to do it now just to see how he would tackle it.

I'm all for Nolan leaving his comfort zone, but I think it's far more likely that Nolan will write a script that suits his needs and methods (and changes the story to do that) long before he leaves his comfort zone.

I have little doubt Nolan would give us a good film, but it wouldn't actually be Ready Player One so what's the point? Just let a director suited to the material take it and let Nolan make another original film rather than an adaption.

He's attached to may projects already. I'll believe it when he start's shooting them movie. He just recently signed on to direct Jeniffer Lawrence in a movie about a female journalist.

That's WB too though so I don't see it as a huge problem, I also thought Spielberg was just producing that by in not positive

Ready Player One is being pushed by WB really, really hard. So it MIGHT be the Beard's next project after his giant movie.

Also, I think he's more suited for the project..maybe he can bust his ole Roger Rabbit magic. Otherwise, Nolan on the project is like having Nolan directing Scott Pilgrim. 'PLayer One' is totally pop culture whimsical.

I was hoping for Wright but Spielberg makes way more sense than Nolan so I'm good. I'm on the camp I'll-believe-it-when-I-see-it because Spielberg has been attaching himself to way too many projects lately. Who does he think he is? :o

WB should hire his none union Mexican counterpart Senor Spielbergo.
