I am writing a paper for my church family camp. the theme is superheroes, and I would like to know what kept you going after 9/11. we had heroes in firemen and police officers, not ones in colored long johns. what kept you going?>
why did superheroes not die out but get even stronger?

thank you very much for your time,

Nathan Welty

Mostly music kept me going. Pink Floyd's The Wall, & various others.

9/11 in comics

This is an interesting site for you.

Note. Spider-Man V2. #36 was the first book to cover the events. The cover was completely black except for the name.

I think people needed superheroes after 9/11. I think that's one of the reasons Spider-man did so well...it was one of the first big movies post 9/11 to take place in New York. Me? I was really looking forward to Michael Jordan coming back, even if it was to Washington. He was my (non-comic) hero and he really lifted my spirits post 9/11 to see him playing again...I loved it.

Me too. Although I heard Jordan was coming back on 9/11, so it was bitter sweet.

In the period of extreme vulnerability following 9/11, people really needed to feel safe and protected... hence people deluding themselves into believing that Spider-Man or the X-Men would come swooping in to save them.

The only comic to make me cry. And I'm not even American.
I don't think it matters what country you're from. The events of that day will make anyone cry, except for those who wanted it to happen.

Super powered beings who help out mankind will always be popular, regardless of catastrophes in the "real" world. The early Greeks, Roman, Norse, etc. called them Gods. However they weren't much different than the comic book heroes of today (in fact Marvel adopted some of the Norse and Greek ones for their comics). We need to tell ourselves stories in which the good can conquer the bad. We need to believe in people who keep fighting for what is "right" even when the odds are stacked against them.
