A police force has paid out thousands in compensation to a teenage boy who was dumped into a rubbish bin by an officer.

The plain-clothed constable hoisted Anop Singh, 15, over his shoulder and put him feet-first in the bin.

The incident, which was triggered by an exchange of words between the boy and officers, was captured on a mobile phone video by one of Anop's friends.

The teenager threatened to sue the Metropolitan Police and claimed other youths bullied him afterwards, branding him "bin boy".

He said the incident was "the worst thing" that had ever happened to him.

Scotland Yard have now paid out about £4,000 in an out-of-court settlement.

Glen Smyth, chairman of the Metropolitan Police Federation, which represents rank-and-file officers, said it was "astonishing" that the boy had received the money.

He said: "Should the officer have put him in the bin? Probably not but I suppose it's the modern equivalent of a giving him a clip round the ear.

"He was being a naughty lad and he was being taught a lesson. I can see why the Met decided to make the pay- out because it would have cost much more to go to court.

"But a written apology should have been enough. This sends out all the wrong signs, a child who behaves badly is rewarded."

The incident occurred in a park in Stoke Newington, North London, in October 2005.

The officers involved were investigating reports of youths throwing conkers at members of the public.

Anop and his friend, Pierre Cornwall, 17, began filming the police.

One officer told Anop to move on or he would put him in a bin, to which the boy replied: "You're going to put me in the bin? Go on then."

The officer carried out his threat as Pierre kept filming. He also filmed another officer making an offensive gesture.

The constable who put Anop in the bin escaped criminal charges and kept his job. But both officers were given a written warning after an investigation by the Independent Police Complaints Commission.

The commission found that Anop was in the bin for no more than a second, and the officers claimed it was "all in good humour".

Deborah Glass, IPCC Commissioner for London, said their actions were "clearly foolish" but "not malicious".

Anop, of Stamford Hill, North London, said the money would never make up for the ' humiliation and distress' he suffered.

The teenager, now 16, said: "It's not about the money.

"If I had done what that police officer did I'm sure I would have ended up in prison.

"I would rather he had been punished properly for what he did to me. It was the worst thing that ever happened to me."

Anop, who plans to train as a plumber, said he was advised to accept the money by his solicitor.

He added: "I can't stand the fact that he got away with it and that he could do it to someone else."

His father, car mechanic Gurdev Singh, 37, said: "We're not satisfied and I will always be angry about the way my son was tossed around like a piece of rubbish.

"The officer should have been sacked."

A Met spokesman said: "We received a complaint and an outof-court settlement was reached."

Good job!!! (of continually enabling weakness)

When I was reading this, I assumed the officer chucked the kid into some back-alley dumpster. Then I saw the pictures, and well... he's a whiny little brat that didn't deserve anyway near 4000 pounds (what is that, $8000 US?) for having his feet put in a wastepaper basket. The other children are right to laugh at him.

I know part of this is the Doctor Who fan in me talking, but you guys need to bring back the Police Box. You think getting put in a little bin is bad? Try getting locked in a tiny wooden shed until backup arrives.

haha stupid cops think they can get away with anything.

You'd think he would lose pounds after being in a bin. Get it? Because, because...pounds are what you weigh from not eating, and pounds are also currency in the UK, get it? Hahahaha.....meh.

He should have put that little whiner in head first.

He added: "I can't stand the fact that he got away with it and that he could do it to someone else."

So he thinks the policeman will go around putting others in bins, like a serial killer?

Haha! :D

No matter what, Cops shouldn't put people in the dumpster lol

LOL. It was a trash bin. Not a dumpster which would be hilarious! I don't know why this freaking kid is complaining he got a ton of cash out of this deal. He should be happy. He was doing something really stupid and he got put in a trash bin. BOO HOO!
