How does a film about a hero, that is not based on any source material, make you feel?

Do you welcome them? Do you doubt them? Should they be done?

We all know Hancock wasn't based on anything, but did you enjoy that film?

Does a hero need to be born by ink before you can embrace him on the silver screen?

You thoughts?

I love the likes of Unbreakable, Hancock and Darkman and non of those were based on CB characters, so it shows it can be done, and quite well in most cases.

The superhero thing is a genre, just like horror, comedy, or drama. It doesn't have to be based on an earlier property but the problem is pretty much every scenario has been done in books before, so even if you do come up with an original one, someone will say it's just ripping off another character or storyline.

I agree. There are no "new powers" under the sun. Hancock was compared to superman. Heroes is compared to x-men.

Obviously, an intriguing trailer and a strong comic-con appearance could get a buzz going, but I wasn't sure how most fan boys felt about a "new" hero.

Yeah, Unbreakable, IMO, is M. Night Shayamalan's best film. But there are people who act like it's a joke because they don't respect the whole comic book superhero thing.

Yeah, their have been more than enough examples of Superhero movies not based on any previous material working just as well as adaptations...

-Unbreakable

-Darkman

-The Incredibles

-The Matrix

Unbreakable is ace, way way underrated.
How is it underrated? Most people I know think its a great film and people seem to think its M's 2nd best film only after 6th sense.

I liked...
Unbreakable
The Incredibles
And The Matrix (Well that one isn't exactly a superhero film)

Thats were i'd disagree.
In a way, The Matrix is actually the PERFECT Superhero origin movie and It looks and plays like the best Vertigo book never made, brought to the screen... Only diffence is, instead of masks and capes the characters wear sunglasses and trenchcoats...

^Yeah, I guess so...I can see how it can be a superhero film but there are so many "superhero" cliches it doesn't have that its hard to qualify it as such. I just see it more as a good old science fiction film than a superhero film but it certainly has a few elements of a superhero movie

Um... Actually Darkman was loosely based on The Shadow. Sam Rami was trying to get the rights to the Shadow, but when he did not, he made it into Darkman.

In response to the thread as a whole - if done well, they can be great. Like The Incredibles.

In response to Hancock - no. The beginning was great, then he went to prison and it was terrible from then on.

Here are a few others:
The Specials
Sky High
Superhero Movie (in a way ) :)

Unbreakable... faptastic, amazing, incredible, subtle. Perfect.

I'd put Matrix in their too. I love that film. The nights I spent talking gibberish while under the influence of toxins, stripping its philosophies apart until the sun came up... realising I was talking to a coffee table.

Good times. Shame about the other two.

The Incredibles is soo good. It's pretty much a perfect franchise for Pixar, and yet they ignore it and dive in head first to a Cars sequel... go figure. :whatever:

Unbreakable without a doubt. Just about the best origin film i've ever seen. It really made me wonder how he would continue on, if at all.

Just outta curiosity, did you watch it tonight?
