Has anyone heard of this movie?
I've been reading nothing but great things about it.

Here is the wiki...i mean imdb page: http://www.us.imdb.com/title/tt0929632/

Honestly the early reviews makes me want to see this film. Its about an obese teenage girl's life in Harlem...she is pregnant with her fathers child (Yes, her father...ewww) and is being abused by her mother.
Mo'Nique plays the abusive mother and supposively her performance was so good that she was given a special award at Sundance and someone asked her: "So what will you be wearing when you win the oscar?" (And yes...Im talking about Mo'Nique, the chunky comidienne).

I like Mo'Nique as a commidienne but its kind of hard to imagine her a serious actress....but I hope she does good because to me shes pretty funny.

The movie is also based on a novel (If you couldn't tell from the title :whatever: )...I haven't read it but its now on my to-read list.

Saw the preview and it looked interesting. I've also heard some pretty good buzz about it.

Too bad...It'll probably never get released in this area.

Apparently Mariah Carey is surprisingly good in this.

^I know...its kind of weird...glitter was one of the worse movies ever. At least she took off the layers of make up though.

I hope it gets released at my movie theaters. I heard they moved the release date to fall for oscar consideration.

Okay, heres the official trailer

I could do without the unnecessary R&B music but aside from that the trailer looks pretty good. I can't believe that evil bit** threw a frying pan at her head...wtf!?!
Anyway, I thought it was kind of funny when that ghetto girl said "My name is shaniqua(or whatever it is) an' mah favo'rite colah is flourcent beige!"...haha, that was kind of funny.

I'm interested in seeing it though and there are stunning reviews so I'll most likely watch it. However seeing "tyler perry" in there made me gag a bit. :o

wow. that looks pretty rough. :csad:

i cant believe thats mariah. looks like this has the potential to be an important movie. maybe open some eyes and show you dont have to travel to the slums of india to find horrible conditions and class inequity.

^^I didn't recognize Mariah at first.

This movie looks like it's going to be very raw and emotional.Just watching the trailer makes me a little sad.:(

Mariah looks completely different without makeup.

sounds like a Gollum spin-off from lord of the rings...

The film has just won another prestigious festival award.

"Precious" wins top Toronto film festival prize
Sat Sep 19, 2009 3:42pm EDT

* Oprah Winfrey-produced film follows past Oscar winners

* 10-day festival to end with "The Young Victoria"

* Few distribution deals announced during festival

By Cameron French

TORONTO, Sept 19 (Reuters) - "Precious: Based on the Novel Push by Sapphire" won the top award at the Toronto International Film Festival on Saturday, giving the Oprah Winfrey-produced film some early momentum heading into Oscar awards season.

The film, a gritty tale of the abuse and redemption of a teenage girl in Harlem, captured the festival's People's Choice award, which is voted on by filmgoers. Last year it went to best picture Oscar winner "Slumdog Millionaire".

Critics have roundly praised "Precious" since its debut at the Sundance Film Festival in January, and audiences in Toronto warmly received the film, which is directed by Lee Daniels and will hit theaters in November.

"I made this film for every person out there who ever looked in the mirror and felt unsure about the person looking back," Daniels, who is traveling in Spain, said in a statement read out at an awards reception in Toronto.

In addition to "Slumdog Millionaire", past winners of the award that have gone on to win the best picture Oscar include "American Beauty" and "Chariots of Fire".

The festival, which wraps up later on Saturday with a red-carpet screening of "The Young Victoria", a look at the British queen's early years, was notable this year for a lack of distribution deals signed as the independent film industry remains mired in a near two-year funk.

More than one-third of the more than 330 films screened entered the festival without distribution deals, and barely a handful were announced during the event's 10-day run.

Festival co-director Piers Handling said he expects more deals involving Toronto-screened films to soon be announced, but said the days of festival bidding wars were likely over.

"It's a combination of just an increasingly conservative marketplace in North America, the recession, as well as a glut of product," he told Reuters after the awards presentation.

"I think there will be fewer films being made."

Other winners included critics' awards for "The Man Beyond the Bridge", an Indian production featuring the little-used language of Konkani, and "Hadewijch", a French film that looks at the possibilities and consequences of a devoutly religious life.

The audience award for top documentary went to "The Topp Twins", which tells the story of a New Zealand lesbian country and western singing duo. (Reporting by Cameron French; Editing by Xavier Briand)

Looks pretty damn good. And the acting looks great too.

I just found out about this movie today while browsing through the net and i have to say that if you've read the book or like drama its definitely worth a look. It really is a sad story indeed and I've already read in other sites that it's more than likely going to get an Oscar nod. That's another movie to add to my list:o....

Mo'Nique and Mariah...no way.

I know you're probably Not going to be the only person to knock it down on those grounds but story itself is sad enough that those two being in it won't matter even if you don't like their acting, which isn't that bad. At least that's my opinion:o. It might actually be worth a look....

Yeah, I suspect this will be that indie flick everyone talks about for 2009. Every year there's that one that becomes a pop culture phenom.

Yes some have even named Mo'Nique as a contender for the best supporting actress Oscar.

Just out found that they're showing this at the PAC festival next month in five different cities before it goes on general release in December. I'd like to go but i'm not sure if i can make it.

There's a story available here on actress Gabourey Sidibe and pictures from the the premiere where stars and producers (Oprah and Tyler Perry) were present.

The film is supposed to have opened yesterday in the USA - has anyone seen it yet?

The trailer alone almost brought me to tears. I can't imagine what the full movie would do to me.

It's a trashy, repugnant exploitation film designed to indulge the audience in their most perverse rubber necking impulses. It's totally shameless and utterly devoid of artfulness or any genuine social/emotional feeling or content. What content it does have is flimsy and trite, at best and reprehensible at worst. Rarely has a film left me so angered.

I'm not feeling this. It looks like it can be a good drama but I really don't like these type of depressing movies.

And light-skinned boy friend with good hair? I understand that a overweight dark skinned black girl could have those feelings because she would be viewed as ugly. But I don't like seeing Blackx portrayed as people who worship lighter skin.

^Well, some of us do. A lot of brown and black people do. There are always asian, middle eastern, hispanic and blacks that feel that's more attractive, because that's been deemed the end all, be all.

But honestly there are some people like that. In my school I've heard ghetto girls (numerous) times say:
"My baby daddy gonna be white oh asian.....I wanna a mixed baby, shoot". So that I would say isn't over the top.

I realize it's like this all over the world especially in India and Asian countries. Just watch Japanese Anime. The artists make the characters look caucasoid.

And did you see that new cosmetics Indian commercial? :whatever:
