Superman IV.
The Superman film I waited in a (very short) line for many years ago.. A superman film that half way through I thought to myself "oh god why am I watching this?"
The Superman film that even tho it's packaged quite nicely in the Superman movie dvd set we never actually dig out for a viewing.

Essentially Superman IV: The blacksheep of the family.


However, If you strip away all the crap.
The dodgy SFX
Chris Reeves poor body condition
The muted soundtrack..

Superman IV at the very heart of it had a brilliant idea, an idea that if handled properly could have (and indeed could still) make for a brilliant Superman movie.

If we strip away the subplot involving the Daily Planet becoming a trash spreading tabloid..
Replace Mark Pillows Nuclear man with a more direct Superman clone (Bizarro perhaps?)

Superman IV or at least the story of Superman IV could have been brilliant.

I didn't mind the 'tabloid' sub plot. It seemed to keep a focus on the Daily Planet and Clarks' 9-5'er.

I agree with what you say....if all those things were fixed then the movie would have been fine. Bizarro would have put it over the top....or Brainiac...as some believe the S3 junk yard sceen was a nod to Biz.

Woulda, coulda, shoulda. Bottom line is the film was trash and garbage. Its a reason Superman Returns continued from Superman 2.

It had good intentions. However, its ludicrous a story. If nothing else, it would've been more bearable if the SFX were as good as in SIII and the Nuclear Man wasn't a roaring idiot with Hackman's voice dubbing over his.

I think the concept behind Superman IV - the core concept that is, not the final script - is very intresting. Superman dismantling nuclear weapons is something that was used again in the Justice League animated show pilot. It is an evocative idea. If Superman really existed, what would we want him to do? And should he?
