World The Official Superman IV: The Quest for Peace Thread.

I havent seen this film since the WB aired a marathon in the early 90s lol Cant recall too much just vaguely.

I dont even have a pov on superman 3 and 4 for this reason.

HI

I recently rewatched this after a ten year absence and it was better than I remembered. It had some awful moments--especially the special effects. But there were some great moments. The speech in the UN..and the confusion of Clark being like by the Stacy woman..just some good stuff but overall, it did look choppy and pieced together. Definitely the worst of the 4. But still, after seeing Superman returns, and having a bunch of things I didnt like in that one, (although it had good moments I enjoyed) I was more tolerant of Chris 3 and 4.

Go figure.

The editing messes up the fight, sure, but the actual footage itself is awful. It's just so laboured, so unconvincing. I mean, I'm not asking for Casshern action from a 1987 release, but IV was seven years after Superman II, and the action in that film blows away Superman IV.

Look at the scene where Nuclear Man 'pounds' Superman into a hole. Reeve seems to be standing on a platform, which he slips off momentarily and then corrects himself. Woeful.

.....and then I saw this...

To me, the editor John Shirley is beyond retarted. The same could go for Supergirl's editor. They knowingly put some of the dumbest (but fixable) mistakes I've ever seen in editing in the films. It's the same with Superman III. There are plenty of FX shots in that film that don't even need to be replaced or repaired, but rather just removed. I love these movies because I'm a Superman freak and I was raised on them, but it pains me to no end. I'm actually thinking about getting into PC based video editing stuff, to that I could actually make the cuts I discuss here and at Superman Cinema on a regular basis. It's too bad I'm "computer-retarted" or I'd be doing the stuff already.

I liked the scene where Superman went to talk with the ghosts of Krypton's elders in his Fortress of Solitude, and I liked the shot where he was on the moon and he straightens the American flag. Even though it's a horrible set, for a moment there, the look of genuine pride on the late Chris Reeve's face as he stares at the flag before Nuclear Man jumps him, I think that's one of his finest moments as Superman.

Of course, if Superman 4 were being made now, they'd probably have Supes taking the nukes away from the world against the will of the world because that would probably go down as "darker and more believable", etc.

BTW, do we have an official thread for Superman 3?

I know Superman III and IV have their bad points, but I still really like them, because every single scene with Christopher Reeve is worth watching, just for his performance. I still think he comes off with credit.

the worst effects were the stock footage of Superman flying straight forward.
cheapest looking **** ever.

plus some things i noticed in the film that were odd was how Nuclear Man would pick up that huge moon rock, and sand would flow off of it like there was gravity.
speaking of gravity, also how about when Superman was twirling the net of nuclear bombs in space to create momentum before tossing it to the sun. i don't know, that just seemed weird and unnecessary.

Jon Cryer was awful! he was such an annoying idiot in it.

The whole problem with Superman IV began when the Salkinds decided to sell the rights to Golan and Globus, who were well renowned for making cheap movies. It was doomed to fail before it even began.

But is Superman IV really that bad Jimbo, considering you have a quote from the film in your sig...:o

I know for a fact (as he is standing right next to me) that Jimbo loves Superman IV thanks to the wonderful performance given by Christopher Reeve, it is just letdown by terrible editing and subpar special effects. :supes:

Something like that.

Of course it was cheap. They actually used the same FX shots of Reeve and just substituted different backgrounds in numerous scenes of the 90 min. version. There are a couple of scenes where they re-use background plates from Supergirl. Cheap as it gets.

Technically, there is gravity on the moon. It's an orbiting satellite of Earth that has around 1/3 the gravity of Earth. This is why they shot the fight scene with an increased frame-rate and some slow-mo. During the sequence where Nuke is shooting energy blasts at Superman and Supes is getting hit, he kind of skips across the ground to show that when he's knocked backward and incapacitated and can't control his flight, he does succumb to the reduced gravity. Then Jon Cryer's mission was accomplished. The only thing that ruins this scene for me is that the background curtain at Elstree Studios is present in some of the shots, and the wires from the flying rigs are easily viewable numerous times. And some of the editing needs to be restructured.

The whole scene with the missile bag should be cut. It was cheaper for them to do that then to show him individually throw a bunch of missiles into the sun. In the comic adaption, this is how he disposes of the missiles. Not his Super Missile Tote.

oh and i just remembered, the flying scene with Lois is very unromantic. the special effects were so bad. cheapest backgrounds. and then Superman even throws her like he was teasing her. it was so awful.

the story itself wasn't bad. it was a nice message to the world. plus it really was a cool idea to have Superman step up and rid the world of nuclear missiles to save the world. i liked his speech infront of the UN.
but i hated that little kid who wrote the letter to Superman. that kid's voice was gawdawful, plus he seemed like such an *******.

i think it was really cool how Superman was talking in different languages, in the movie. :)

Me too, I hate the line "Ill tell you what I would DOOOOOOOOO!!!"

Man what a terrible line!:down

But I did like the message of superman IV, the failure of the movie was not Reeves fault, if anything he saved the movie and made it watchable. The editors and director should be ashamed of themselves. Not to mention the studio!

^'tis the reason I still watch the film. The reason I know it's bad but I still like it anyway is because I grew up watching all of these films. In fact, sometimes I find myself liking IV better than III (but Evil Supes VS. Supes owns SIV)...Just because I remember watching this one the most...I was born in 87 so after it came on TV eventually I would play with my old DC Superheroes Superman from Toybiz in front of the TV....ah memories...but above this movie Superman 78 is and will always be the best...but who knows...we could see Donner's SII and than decide that is...

Im really looking forward to the Donner cut. I love 1 and 2..but am concerned about how seamless they can do the donner version what with using screen tests for some scenes..refilming others. I sure hope it is worth the hype because I am really excited.

I actually like the film despite the flaws, I like the idea of Superman ridding the world of all nuclear weapons, and Christopher Reeve is as wonderful as ever, as the Man of Steel, but critics panned it and unfortunately it is seen in the eyes of many, as a failure, which is why I said it was doomed before it started, because they gave it to those lame cheapos Golan Globus.

I recommend you all read the comics adaptation of Superman IV. It is 10x better then the movie.

Dude, it's pretty easy, I've been re-editing Batman Forever myself.
