You all heard the roumors a while ago and now here's not only the confirmation but an actual date:

TheForce.net

In the magazine Popular Science's June 2006 issue there's an article called "Return Of The 3D". The article features the work of a couple of companies working on transforming 2D movies into high tech 3D films, without the "distortions that cause your brain and stomach to revolt."

Specific quotes from the article include...

"...Lucas is expected to release a fully 3-D version of Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace next spring."

"The staffers put on pairs of thick glasses and watched as clips from Star Wars were played. Suddenly the screen itself seemed to dissolve away, as scenes stretched out toward the audience. Anakin Skywalker and Obi-Wan Kenobi's faces grew closer to viewers as the characters prepared to chase a would-be assassin. Pod cars buzzing in the background really appeared to be hundreds of feet away ... Soon, the Jedi Master himself came in. George Lucas sat down, put on the glasses and, within a few minutes, passed judgment: 'I'm sold! I'm sold!'"

There's a bit more, and the article highlights a couple other big-name directors, and some major companies (including ILM) and the technologies being used to turn many movies (not just Star Wars) into big-screen 3D films.

I recieved my issue of Popular Science in the mail, I'm not sure if it's hit stores yet. Also, a web version of the article is still not available on the Popular Science website.

But yeah, seems like we can expect 3-D Star Wars in theaters next year!
Yes, George, you're sold. ;)

Anyway, even if it's the weakest of the series, I'm there.

bah... I'm not giving Lucas the Hutt anymore of my cash. Enjoy your 3d prequel movies with your 3d Jar Jar and 3d eopie fart then..

They should just release the final lightsaber duel in 3D...that's the only thing worth watching besides Liam Neeson in the film.

well first off: COOL! i have been waiting for this 3D version since rumour of the Original Trilogy on DVD made the rounds years ago, and since the Unaltered OTs will be coming this fall, its just about hight time that news of the 3D will finally become a reality :)

that article was describing the chase sequence in AOTC, not TPM. so what is it really? is TPM gonna be the only film of the SW saga that will be released on 3D next year? or will the other films be released all at the same time? its kinda silly to release one piece at a time when its a no brainer that most folks will hold out until all six films will be released as a set.

 I'd go and see the final lightsaber fight whether it's 3D or not.....awesome, awesome scene, the best thing in the prequels.

From what's been reported yes, it'll be one movie a year. The AOTC bit was probabily just a demo.

Episode I always feels like a proper Star Wars film to me, whereas II and III don't. III is a far better film, but doesn't have that quality, whatever it is.

I know what you mean.
Episode I had that bit of uhmph to it that Episodes II and III lacked.

I'm there. Love the Star Wars movies.

*sigh* i'm a box-set fan, so this is going to be another 6-year wait for me? :(

Uh... I'm not even sure if the technology they're using will be home-theatre friendly.

Exactly. And Liam Neeson slots in perfectly with the actors in the original trilogy, whereas no-one else in the prequels does.

Episode 1 is a vastly underated film. Even with Jar Jar.

Despite it's flaws, its still a Star Wars movie. And I don't know why but it's just something that excites me when a SW movie is released in theaters. I'm there:o:up:

Hmm... a couple of years ago there were all those roumors about a CGI Obi-Wan in Episode IV... I wonder...

...

****. I'll probably go see it. :(

And I ****ing hate that movie.

3D wasn't cool 10 years ago in the 90s. 3D wasn't cool 20 years ago in the 80s. It wasn't cool 40 years ago in the 60s. It won't be cool when George Lucas does it.

...why did you skip the '70s?

Why not give it a chance before you dismiss. 3-D has never had the power of a major franshise like Star Wars behind it. It seems preemptive to say that it will not work because it has not before. I dunno, Matt, recenetly you have been a bit whiney, man. What is the deal?:(

It's great they're implementing this technology beginning with the best film of the six.
