Perfect World Entertainment's newest installment in the MMO battleground is entering open beta today. Swordsman focuses on large-scale PvP in a martial arts environment; the wuxia feel to the game is inspired by the novels of Louis Cha, who has sold over 100 millions books worldwide.

Swordsman's open beta will allow cross-server functionality and open the in-game store. Those who participated in the closed beta will get their rewards starting today, as well.

You can find out more about Swordsman at the game's official site.

Are you excited for Swordsman but not willing to jump into an open beta test without a launch date? Then all we can tell you is that it's time to get jumping because Swordsman will fully launch on July 29th. The launch will bring along the Demon Pit event, pitting players against demons underground in exchange for the most powerful equipment in the game.

Launch will also apparently bring "streamlining" to the player experience, although we don't know the details just yet. If you're not even sure what Swordsman is, the short version is that it's a wuxia action MMO based on the novels of Louis Cha. The long version can be found in the producer's trailer just past the break or in our recent stream of the game. The even longer version... well, the game is in open beta, so you can always just download it and try it out for yourself. That would work.

Swordsman : Expanding into the Gilded Wasteland

Posted Oct 22, 2014

Gilded Wasteland is a new expansion launching tomorrow for free-to-play wuxia MMO, Swordsman. Perfect World Entertainment recently treated us to a demo tour of the new additions players can expect to find when it launches.
Read more of Michael Bitton's Swordsman: Expanding into the Gilded Wasteland.
First on the agenda was a tour of one of three new regions arriving with the expansion. The new zones (Ping Liang, Dukhan, and Shadow Mountain Plains) are all desert based and the developers tell us, are geographically accurate to northern China. Gilded Wasteland is described as heavily story based, with players venturing into these northern Chinese regions to defeat their greatest foes.
At the outset of your adventures in Swordsman, raiders assault your hometown and kill everyone you know and love, and from there, the game’s story follows your character on a tale of redemption and vengeance. Gilded Wasteland’s story allows players to turn the tables and exact revenge upon the assailants in their own homeland.
Swordsman%20Gilded%20Wasteland%207_t.jpg

Dukhan, a mountainous region, is home to desert town (a new instance) and the empress’ temple (a new public dungeon). Instances, as you might imagine, are content designed for a small group of 5-6 players, while dungeons are out in the open world. What was interesting to learn is that players are exempt from punishment in PvP while in these public dungeons. Normally, players can kill each other in the overworld, but killing players who have decided not to attack other players will turn your name from white to yellow, and eventually, to red. Once your name is red, you’ll drop any unbound items on death (including gold). All these rules are thrown out in the case of public dungeons (including killing guildmates and members of your alliance), however, so expect a certain level of chaos when entering the empress’ temple this week.
Shadow Mountain Plains was next on our tour and this zone is actually connected to the game’s next expansion (currently in development) and serves as a bit of a teaser for players. Here, players will venture past the Great Wall into a region that draws heavy inspiration from the Mongolian Steppes.
We were also shown Road to Eminence, the first of three instances in the expansion. This instance is available beginning at level 84. It should be noted that the Gilded Wasteland is bumping the level cap from the current 89 to 94, so players can get started on the expansion content prior to hitting the current level cap (the new zones start at level 80).
In Road to Eminence, players will fight against traitors from many of the other martial arts schools as they track down their original assailants. Being a bit of a Swordsman neophyte myself, it was in this instance that I got a closer look at the game’s highly mobile, action combat. Not only can players dash around the battlefield, they can also leap and air dash across the screen. This mobility is key to staying alive in Swordsman, since the developers have eschewed the traditional holy trinity for a more Guild Wars 2 approach where players are all essentially responsible for themselves.
Swordsman%20Gilded%20Wasteland%205_t.jpg

On the PvP side of things, Gilded Wasteland expands on the game’s existing PvP offerings by adding the ability for players to disable Lost Arts and upgraded skills in tactical arenas and introducing instanced battlegrounds to the game. The two battleground modes available at launch consist of team deathmatch and a twist on capture the flag called capture the lion costume, which is basically exactly what it sounds like.
New item hunt gameplay is being added to Swordsman the new Celestial Weapons feature. Beginning at level 50, players can do a quest to acquire a flashy looking celestial weapon that will grow with them as they progress through the game. These weapons can be acquired completely for free and are the most powerful weapons a player could ever need when properly upgraded. Upgrades are made through the acquisition of special drops available via a daily quest system, so don’t expect to be able to pump one of these bad boys to crazy levels right off.
Finally, companions (both animal and humanoid) are getting upgrades via a new Cultivation system that allows you to send your various companions out on quests that eventually teach them new skills they can use to aid you in battle. Companions can also learn Focus skills (PvP skills) that focus primarily on control and resource restoration (health/Chi). We’re told that these Focus skills should be especially useful when participating in the aforementioned battlegrounds.

Swordsman : Gilded Wasteland - Focused on Guild and Large Group Play

Posted Nov 03, 2014

Swordman is the new martial arts MMO from Perfect World Entertainment that just released in North America on July 29th of this year. It has so far enjoyed positive reviews from fans of the genre, but what's even more amazing is the fact that the game is already getting its first expansion this fall with Gilded Wasteland.
Read more of Shawn Schuster's Swordsman: Gilded Wasteland - Focused on Guild and Large Group Play.
This expansion is said to play heavily into promoting group content through guilds and large dynamic arenas, so we sat down with Associate Product Manager Wayne Song to talk about this aspect of the new content.

MMORPG.com: Gilded Wasteland brings more of a focus on guilds, allowing players more tools and incentives for joining guilds. Can you explain some of these new features?
Wayne Song: Guilds have always been a key element of Swordsman, but with Gilded Wasteland we wanted to bring more grouping experiences that will bring players together in a more dynamic way. In addition to the new endgame instances and dungeon, we’ve also introduced new PvP arena modes, with Team Deathmatch and Capture the Lion.
These new gameplay modes get players working together in dynamic fights that we feel are uncommon in most MMOs.
MMORPG.com: How do guilds influence the gameplay progression in the new regions?
Wayne Song: The new regions are designed for the new level cap up to level 94, and is used to help players reach the new level content in a more interesting way. In the future, we may add new events and more guild features in these regions, making players get even more involved the magnificent regions of those maps.
Since guilds are such a key feature of Swordsman, players will definitely want to group up to take on the new instances and dungeon.
Swordsman%20Gilded%20Wasteland%207_t.jpg

MMORPG.com: Are the three new high-level instances more guild-friendly?
Wayne Song: Certainly! Players in guilds will find it easier to create teams to challenge the new instances at a higher difficulty. Some of the new dungeons are technically soloable, the higher difficulty instances really need to be completed as a group.
MMORPG.com: Guild Quests are unlocked at level 35. How has the feedback been on these? Are they popular with players?
Wayne Song: Guild quests are definitely popular, especially here in China. We’ve designed Swordsman for players to level up quickly at early stage, so they can reach Lv35 easily. At that point, the guild mechanics become very important for leveling up.
MMORPG.com: Are tweaks or improvements to the group match-maker system planned?
Wayne Song: We’re thinking about it! One of our goals is to try to make players have a better experience with the group matchmaker system. We really want players playing as much of the Swordsman content as possible.
MMORPG.com: Solo progression is enjoyed by many MMO gamers. Is Swordsman still solo-friendly, or is the group experience what it's all about?
Wayne Song: Swordsman allows players to go solo in game, and an example of this is how there are different difficulties of instances. Players can complete the normal ones by themselves. For players who group up though, there are also lots of guild quests and guild events which need teammates.
Anyway, the region of Jianghu is a community of martial artists. Take part in that community!
[YT]CBUKB5Gx13s[/YT]
MMORPG.com: What lessons have you learned from previous Perfect World action MMOs, and how did you apply those lessons to Swordsman?
Wayne Song: The dev team of Swordsman did learn lots from our experiences with quests systems, combat systems, stats systems, etc. from previous games. We use these experiences to help design efficiently, and these provide good experiences to help us make new and fun content in Swordsman.

Swordsman : Gilded Wasteland - The Role of PvP in a Story-Driven Game

Posted Nov 10, 2014

Last week, we had the opportunity to sit down with Swordsman Online's Associate Product Manager Wayne Song to discuss the guild aspect of the new Gilded Wasteland expansion. This week, we're continuing that interview with some more from Song on the importance of PvP in the game and what role it plays in the endgame.
Read more of Shawn Schuster's Swordsman: Gilded Wasteland - The Role of PvP in a Story-Driven Game.
MMORPG.com: Gilded Wasteland has streamlined the game a bit to get players to that high-level content more quickly. Is PvP, unlocked at level 30, part of what you're driving players towards?
Wayne Song: Right, we want to help players to level quickly, letting them experience the interesting content in a natural way. We don’t want to lose those players because of a long level-up process, and we want players to enjoy the exciting PvP quickly, too.
MMORPG.com: Cross-server battlegrounds are new to the game through this expansion. How has the player response been so far?
Wayne Song: Chinese players like this new means of PvP quite a bit, and players are enthusiastic to join it. We hope US and EU players like it, too.
MMORPG.com: Tell us about the new Capture the Lion arena. How does it work?
Wayne Song: Capture the Lion is a 6v6 arena mode. The goal for Red team and Blue team is to try to seize the gold lion, and take it to the target location, then get one point. The one that gets the most points in seven minutes will win. The respawn point for each side has the black lion costume, used to grant special combat skills. Have fun with it!
Swordsman%20Gilded%20Wasteland%208_t.jpg

MMORPG.com: What types of differences do you find between the way PvP is played in the Chinese version versus the Western version?
Wayne Song: Chinese players and Western players will both enjoy the excitement of PvP. Generally, Chinese players may prefer to accumulate the stats, then oppress their rival from a stats advantage. Culturally, Chinese players like to be the most powerful one in game (influenced by Wuxia genre tropes of being the best). Western players may prefer the fair combat and team work you can see in our stat-agnostic PvP modes. Of course, this is a generalization and can be applied to almost every game. So, in Swordsman, we have the fair stat-neutral arena, and in the PvP in wild maps we have solo PK and team PvP.
MMORPG.com: Swordman has a strong storyline, but traditionally, story doesn't mix with PvP in an MMO. Are you finding that balance?
Wayne Song: Luckily, Swordsman’s background is a Wuxia world, so it already has PvP element, like the ideas of dramatic vengeance and masters fighting to death for the ultimate Kung fu and Jianghu rank. Some of the current PvP content in game may not exist in the original story, but it’s totally make sense in that story background. We were able to add lots of PvP content easily under the story background, allowing players to compete with others, and be the number one Kung fu master in game!
