Thor: Ragnarok director Taika Waititi to portray Korg in film

(Chris Hemsworth) will be reunited with his old friend Hulk (Mark Ruffalo). But, during his layover on Sakaar, he’ll also make a new friend who just happens to be portrayed by Hemsworth’s boss.

Director Taika Waititi has made a habit of appearing in his films and even had a role in DC’s Green Lantern, so he always knew he would work his way into his upcoming superhero film. Yet, he didn’t originally plan on playing Korg, an 8-foot-tall rock creature straight out of Marvel’s “Planet Hulk” comic storyline.

“Obviously, being made of rocks, we wanted somebody like The Rock to play him, but there wasn’t enough chicken or salmon in Australia to sustain he and Chris,” joked Waititi at a Monday press event at Marvel’s Los Angeles office. “I never thought I’d be playing the most lovable character in the film.”

Lovable is an interesting adjective for a literal mountain creature and part of the Kronan race, one of which Thor memorably took down in the opening of Thor: The Dark World. But Waititi set out to defy expectations and create a character who is the opposite of what he appears.

“We wanted to change the idea of what a hulking guy made of rocks could be,” he shared. “He’s huge and heavy, but with a light soul. We wanted to make him funny and a relatable entry point into this world. And Thor needs friends.”

As evidenced in a scene screened of Korg and Thor’s first meeting, Waititi’s character will be both an ally and a fan favorite. Also forced to fight in the Grandmaster’s (Jeff Goldblum) gladiator duels, Korg reveals to his new friend why he’s a prisoner. “I tried to start a revolution, but I didn’t bring enough pamphlets,” he charmingly says.

Having already buddied up to Thor and given the Asgardian a fun nickname, will Watiti’s next move to start angling for Korg to find himself a place among the Avengers?

“I’ll lobby for anything,” he jokes. “My ego’s that big.”

He's a great character and I enjoyed his bromance with the Hulk throughout the Greg Pak sagas.

Taika Waititi talks about his character Korg.
His name is Korg, like the piano, and he’s a Kronan! I mean, I know you’ve seen (Thor) Dark World. At the beginning of Dark World, there’s a Kronan there. This is kind of a relation to that guy. He’s not as tall. He’s sort of about eight feet tall, and he’s um, made of rocks. He’s one of the creatures featured in the Planet Hulk storyline along with another character called Miek who is also in the film, so we’re borrowing those from their storyline and putting them in the arena, the Contest of Champions, that the Grandmaster, Jeff Goldblum runs on the planet Sakaar, which the Hulk is the main champion.

He’s one of the few characters to befriend Thor on the planet. He helps him out. Sort of explains how things go and becomes an ally to Thor.

We wanted to change the idea of an obvious choice of how the character would sound,” Waititi said. “Even though he’s huge and heavy, he has a very light soul. He’s very lovable, and has a good amount of humor.

Being so big, he’s a slugger. He’s not very graceful. He hits hard.

Taika Waititi talks about Miek.
Miek. He’s from the comics as well. He’s sort of like an insectoid. He sort of has a cool exoskeleton with knife hands. He’s basically sort of a larva shaped thing. He controls the exoskeleton with these controls and stuff. He’s way more graceful than Korg. Much more efficient and Miek does not talk.

I hope his Color is like in the Comics and not the Boring Grey from Thor The Dark World

Yeah, this has been big news down here. I suspect that Ragnarok is going to do big business in our little islands.

He looks pretty interesting.

Waititi said his voice as Korg was inspired by Polynesian bouncers who would look very big and intimidating but have very softspoken voices.

People that we're at SDCC saw an extra scene with Korg, Thor... apparently it was that scene of them in the prison and people that saw it said it was hilarious.

In the Planet Hulk story, Korg was portrayed as the logical voice of reason. I wonder how they will portray him in this film.

People that saw the footage said he was a ver nice rock character, soft spoken, super friendly ... But pretty intimidating at the same time just by his looks. A hard shel but a soft interior. And i think Taika also said he would be a character with a lot of heart. I'm expecting him to end up being a fan favorite from Sakaar to us the audience.
