I just heard that in England (where I live) it is illegal to fly the Union Flag or the English Flag (St. George Cross) as it is deemed racist.

That's political correctness taking too far.

I am in no way patriotic and wouldn't fly our flag if I did have the right. But apparently I don't and I am opposed to THAT!

How is flying a union jack or St. G's cross racist.

Okay I could understand a Swastika or the old Confederate flag but British flags?

That's just stupid.

I was told by my garndad and he is an active member of the local labour party, studies law and history in his part time and knows a lot about this country as he is friends with Members of Parliament.

So I believe him...I just don't get it.

I don't live in England, but does it have something to do with anti-Scottish/anti-Irish/etc. feelings? I could see groups using St. George's flag for that, since it's a symbol of just England.

I can't understand the Union Flag though. Isn't it the official flag of the United Kingdom? How is flying your own flag illegal?

Edit: I now remember something about it being illegal to fly the Union Flag on ships/boats, but that had something to harbor fees and impersonating a naval vessel, not racism.

I grow more and more sick of this ******ed world with every passing hour.

Alright, did some quick research and it appears that it is illegal to display either on a boat or ship, but that's it.

The Union Jack was being used to avoid paying harbor duties. Apparently British Naval vessels were exempt from them, and were indicated by flying the flag. Other ships started using it so they didn't have to pay, so Charles I restricted it's use to His (or now Her obviously) Majesty's vessels.

St. George's Cross is an indication of rank, and can only be flown from a ship in the command of an Admiral of the Royal Navy. The only exception are for vessels that participated in a rescue mission at the Battle of Dunkirk, who are allowed to fly it as a jack (a smaller flag at the front of a ship).

St. George's Cross is associated with hooliganism, which gets racist, but it doesn't appear either are illegal to fly period; just on ships.
