Before i even start let my just say that this is going to be long so if you don't feel like reading stop now. Also if it is removed for content I can understand (it is about TDK but it is also a little off-topic).

Here's an interesting article that I just read. It's titled "How to Make a $1 Billion Dollar Blockbuster Movie" and it claims that there are "10 secrets to making a Billion Dollar Movie".

I swear this thing is filled with so many factual errors and complete ignorance to the subject matter, that I wondered how the author can claim to be a journalist. Then I realized that its a FauxNews article. I mean such complete indifferance to the facts is to be expected from them right. :woot:

First off it says "Win, Place and Show. First in a series kicks things off, the middle entry does all right - but being that last and final entry in a three-story arc is key. Both "King" ($1.13 billion) and "Pirates 3" ($1.06 billion) wrap up their stories".

Pirates 3? In the beginning of the article it states that only Titanic, TDK, ROTK, and Dead Man's Chest have ever reached $1 billion. So how they complete forgot what they had just mentioned baffles me. Out of the four billion-dollar-movies only ROTK is the last in a three-story arc. Both TDK and DMC are middle entries which supposedly "do all right".

Next key, "Broken Hearts. Speaking of which, each billion-dollar film included some form of epic, potentially doomed romance: Lifelong (?) partners are separated forever (Knight)."
I think we can safely agree that Rachael and Harvey little if any effect on TDK's box-office performance. And lifelong partners? ???

The article goes on to state that the international gross is also key (and it is). Except that the article claims, " [TDK] still has earned more in the U.S., but the rest of the world is likely to overtake that soon".
Raheeheeheeally?
Shoot I wish, but we all know TDK has reached the end of its money making days both in the US and overseas. No way in hell is TDK going to make another $65 million overseas. Would be nice though.

Next key, "Never underestimate the appeal of a Happy Meal toy."
If anyone can find me a happy meal toy for any of these 4 movies I'd be much abliged.

Then it claims that, "Timing is Everything. There are all sorts of formulas to help executives know when to release a film into the wild - and based on these four, December and early Summer are good times ("Knight" came out on July 14 in the U.S.; "Pirates" on June 24; "Titanic" on December 14 and "Return" on December 17)."

"The Dark Knight" released July 18
"Dead Man's Chest" released July 7.
"Titanic" released December 19

Also since when has July been considered "early summer". I thought that was middle summer. And by all accounts the Summer Movie Season starts in May and ends in August. So July is actually pretty late.

Bottom line there is no formula to get a $1 billion movie. Sure if your a FauxNews reporter you can twist the facts (like always) to fool people in thinking there is, but there isn't. A movies success is based on hundreds upon hundreds of factors.

TDK, and DMC were sequals to hugely successful originals. Both of their domestic grosses were huge and unprecidented. TDK however did better in the US than DMC, and DMC did better than TDK overseas. Both were outdone hugely by ROTK overseas, which in turn did worse than both in the US. Also ROTK was the last in the trilogy while TDK and DMC are 2nds in franchises and aren't necessarily part of trilogies. TDK had a dead star giving and awesome performance. Pirates had Johnny Depp and sexy Keira Knightly. ROTK had Frodo, Aragorn and alot of gay hobbits singing and hugging. TDK had epic IMAX battles between Batman and Joker. DMC had Jack Sparrow fooling everyone again with his wit and fabulousness :cwink:. ROTK had a CGI ghost army completely wiping out the entire army of Mordor without breaking a sweat and left you wondering why they didn't just do this in the first place :lmao:

And as for Titanic.... SCREW YOU TWEENERS!!! AND FICKLE OVERSEAS AUDIENCES!!! ($1.2 billion overseas? Are you ****ting me?). Titanic is the biggest proof that there is no formula. It came out in the mid 90s as opposed to the other 3 being movies of the new millenia. Titanic wasn't a sequal and wasn't part of an established franchise. It never had huge Weekend numbers. In fact in all its weekends in theaters it never made more than $30 million. It was a marathon runner as opposed to a sprinter. The most glaring difference though is the fact that while TDK, Pirates, and ROTK relied on the male audience (for the most part), most of Titanic's money came from Females, and homosexuals. Oh and from men with their hairless balls in a vice grip. Oh and guys trying to score with horny DiCapprio tweenies.

Sure this article makes some good points (franchise, international audiences, timing, quality) but the "facts" they used to support thier claims were ludicrous. If anyone knows a way to respond to the author please let me know because the article doesn't have a comments section.

Personally reading that I don't think there's any formula because whilst I was sure TDK would be successful I personally had no idea it would end up THAT successful, ditto DMC (though, having seen a preview, that was for reasons of quality as I assumed that the film's longer, darker and 'complex' plot would alienate the audiences who loved the first POTC movie which was just a fun romp).

Short and simple and to the point. "I like that" :hoboj:

Bottom line we agree. There is no formula or "10 secrets" to making a $1 billion movie. They just happen. You have to be good movie... sort of (Titanic!!!). You have to fans. You have to be a spectacle, a phenomenon (more than just a movie). And most importantly you have to be extremely lucky becuase there's no way of ever knowing what will happen.

I checked the theater counts for tomorrow, and it seems that tonight is the last night that TDK will be in second-run theaters. So, tomorrow the final domestic tally will be revealed.

The only formula I can see is that you make a movie that appeals to an audience that well see it over and over again [pre-teen girls or geeky guys] and release it at a time where there is little to no competition fir that market

Titanic surprised a lot of people when it consistently brought in the bucks for 9 straight months when it debuted in December 1997. Sure, you have to figure in the teenage girl fanbase, but I think it reached a wider audience than that through word-of-mouth. I would think that since it came from the director of Aliens and the first two Terminator movies would draw in more guys just out of curiosity.

The last film that became a huge hit because of the predominant girl fanbase was Twilight, but that didn't have as glowing reviews Titanic had.

I saw TDK again last weekend on IMAX for the first time. Incredible! The should just leave it there permanently.

Way to go Fox, even your non-political articles are full of ****. How the **** anyone can stand anything that those Neanderthals say is beyond me.

I honestly wouldn't mind them releasing it again in IMAX theaters. It should be a yearly event. :woot:
