Actually no,they didn't.

It had $530 at the beggining of December,a week before the dvd came out while making 187,000 that weekend.

It was the end of the run however you look at it...TDK had zero chance of beating Titanic even if the DVD came in March.

We're not talking about here about some indie movie like Juno that will suddenly increase because of popularity factors.

TDK was already seen by almost everyone who wanted to see it,it's not the second highest grossing movie by mistake...it already had tremendeous word of mouth,excellent reviews.

So the possiiblity that another 10 million people (an average of $7 ticket)would have watched the movie if the dvd didnt came out,is a fantasy made up by websites which job is to make sensational head-lines not following facts and history.

It was making peanuts at the theaters by the time the dvd came out. Anyone who thinks it could have topped 600 million is out of their minds. It'd have to have won Best Picture AT LEAST for a chance, and that's clearly out the window.

I wouldn't know about websites, as I don't really follow Dark Knight fansites or industry blogs or whatever you're referring to. I'm going off of a personal conversation with Michael Uslan at a family gathering. He was pissed (this would have been back in mid-September) that Warners was planning (at the time) to pull the film before Thanksgiving, because he was pretty sure that if the film got a chance, it could beat Titanic. He was talking about leaving it theaters for a long time, like a full year (Titanic got nine months on its first run, Dark Knight got six at the most.) That was basically the last I heard about it, because like I said, I don't follow this stuff that much. This thread is kind of the extent of that, and I check in on this thread about once every three months.

If Warners let the film stay in theaters all the way into December, then good on them.

Titanic was kept in theaters for a year because for the first half of its run it kept making MORE money each weekend. TDK did not.

When are people going to understand that it was never going to make more than Titanic. WB could only have milked about another $10 to $15 million having left in theaters longer and having re-released in more theaters. That is far less than the $65 million+ that it needed in order to pass Titanic.

Instead they decided to release it on DVD/BluRay in time for christmas and it was worth it. They have sold almost 12 million copies and have made over $200 million. Not bad considering an economy that is in recession.

TDK's chances of beating Titanic died when it posted its first Monday gross, because it didn't break SM2's Monday record. It would have needed another $3-4 million on that Monday so the subsequent percentage drops would have been enough to push it over Titanic. Maybe.

Michael Uslan is a producer, he doesn't work in WB marketing where they would actually have to figure out this stuff.

Titanic will never happen again, and I'd argue that it will be a while before TDK happens again too.

I finally saw it on IMAX at Navy Pier on Friday night. It was mostly filled in the middle, roughly 50+ people I think. I initiated an applause which everyone followed me when the credits started to roll

It's almost like it wasnt meant to do it...first it wasn't released in China which would have helped the movie crossed the mark 5 months ago,then WB reports the overseas gross is at $469 but a week later changes the number to $465,5....and then the movie doesnt get the expected Best Picture nom(which was why the movie got a re-release in the first place) which would have certainly push it through the billion barrier.

If the re-release was intended to boost its Oscar chances (which I thought was originally the idea), then WB wouldn't have released in a day after Oscar nominations were announced.

In the same vein, I've been feeling that it was somehow meant to make this much money in the first place. Think about it - it had so much going against it. BB didn't do gangbusters in theaters, it was too dark, it was too long, it wasn't fun, Heath Ledger died (who wants to see a dead actor?), it didn't even have a Superbowl spot.

But in the same vein, Heath Ledger died (rest his soul) and the hype of his performance made TDK a must-see. The reviews started coming out, blown-away by just how good it was. I won't forget seeing the movie showings disappearing before my eyes - one midnight showing at a local theater sold out within a minute.

The fact that it maybe won't make a billion worldwide only speaks to the overseas performance, but the domestic gross speaks for itself. At this point, I don't really care that it might not make it, nor do I really care that it didn't get the Oscar noms we wanted it to. It already had no business being as good as it was, and it REALLY had no business making as much money as it did.

I think they were fairly certain it would get the Best Picture nomination...most of the industry were shocked by the TDK snub.

I remember the night before the nomination the people who were predicting a snub for TDK were doing it as a ''No guts,No glory'' prediction where a huge surprise ensues.

After all the guilds nomination it was suppose to be in the bag...and i think WB thought that too.
