That Guy With The Glasses

Now I remember why I stopped watching Pokemon. It wasn't because I out-grew it (please, I watch Chowder). It's because Ash was quite possibly the worst Pokemon player I'd ever seen.

In other news, Linkara tackled Power Rangers Time Force. All I could remember about that show was the annoying robotic owl, a dude had green hair, the Quantum Ranger was an a-hole, and the Red Time Force Ranger was actually the ancestor of the guy he replaced. Wild Force will likely come in a few weeks, and then we can get to the gloriousness of Ninja Storm!

I was quite honestly shocked by how good that season was.

It's strange. Ninja Storm was nothing like Mighty Morphin, but something about it just felt so fresh and exciting like I was watching Mighty Morphin all over again.

Even though it had a talking Guinea pig it seemed to cut down on the camp a good bit, the fight choreography was quite good for a show like that. The vibe of the show was closer to Power Rangers in Space than Mighty Morphin.

It's funny. Power Rangers is one of those weird shows that's usually really cheesy and dumb and thus fun to watch for those reasons, but every once in a while has a character or an episode or even a storyline that is just unironically good and enjoyable (such as the later story arc of In Space, the pink and Quantum Rangers, as well as the villains, from Time Force, most of RPM, the Red Ranger and Master Org's shared backstory from Wild Force, etc.), which just makes the viewing all the more fun, like eating a bunch of cheap-yet-tasty candy and then every once in a while finding a piece of fancy dutch chocolate. But Ninja Storm... I had problems with. Yeah, it was campy like most of the other seasons, but I found it to be more annoying campy than fun campy. And it didn't have any of the occasional good dramatic moments or characters that some of the pervious seasons had. And I found Lothor to be intolerably obnoxious as far as evil overlords go.

Watching Ninja Storm and the seasons that came after, I'm amazed at how effortlessly Kiwi actors can do American accents. I didn't even know what a NZ accent sounded like until Lord of the Rings came out.

I take it you never watched Hercules and Xena. Those shows were packed with Kiwi actors doing fake American accents (and a hilarious amount of barbarians played by Polynesians), and they were usually pretty dead on.

I don't know why some other countries screw up our accents so much. I'm looking at you, UK.

To be fair, I always thought Xena's accent was weird, but I never placed it as foreign, just kind of unique to her character.

On an unrelated note, I'm still kind of surprised that Angry Joe got Lisa Foiles to be on his show.

Anybody see Nolstalgic Critic's new review for Mr. Nanny? It's awesome, lol.

No, I watched those too.

I just watched the review of The Room. I don't think anyone could watch it if it wasn't so hilariously awful.

So, does anyone watch LordKat's D&D sessions? They are hilarious, and they're continuing Spoony's campaignin a few minutes.

"WORLD'S GREATEST DETECTIVE!!!" :awesome:

Does anyone else think that CR's voice doesn't match his face? :p

I thought he would be fatter.

I don't know. Listening to a group of minor celebrity comedians talk about work on ustream is one thing (and heck, I've done it a few times and still felt a little awkward about it), but listening to minor celebrity comedians play D&D on ustream just feels too fanboyish to me.

Luckily they're so entertaining in their reactions to when stuff happens it's worth it. And they've had some epic battles. (I've never played the game, or even seen it played until I started watching them.)

I guess I might check it out. Although all this talk reminds me that I need to get back into the roleplaying swing of things. Not D&D, though, it's actually not one of my favorite systems.

Apparently the play 4th edition, although Spoony was talking today how much he misses AD&D, and would also like to try some other games.

The hardest part of listening is usually Angry Joe. He's hell of entertaining, but he's the newb player and does, or tries to do, a lot of dumb things in the beginning. (So maybe it's fortunate they didn't record the first sessions after all :p)

I never played fourth edition (I think I played 3.5, but I can't remember), but the changes don't sound like anything I'd like. Most hard core gamers told me that it's a lot more like first edition than anything else.

Newb players can make things... interesting. I can attest to that, still being somewhat newb-ish myself.

Initial review

and follow up review

Spoony was also talking about it tonight, as they got into a conversation about the previous editions when their session was over. And the differences he described from the older stuff seemed pretty interesting and logical, although much more complicated. Hopefully LordKat didn't stop recording before they got to that point because Spoony was rather informative.

I think his general impression of 4ed is that he likes it, and it's well balanced. But almost too well balanced.

That actually can be a problem with RPGs. Broken games are only bad when you're playing with someone who'll be an asshat about it. If you're playing with a group that are dedicated to the two cardinal rules of all tabletop games (1: Don't be ******ed and 2: Don't be a *****e), then games that are a little unbalanced can be really fun, because it allows you to do a lot of cool stuff and get really creative. Mutants and masterminds, a super hero based RPG, is good for that. It's kinda broken, but not so broken that it isn't a good game as long as you have a good GM and players who aren't jerks. A friend of mine once figured out how to deal infinite damage by using the powers of intangibility and duplication to just have an endless supply of dupes phase into enemies and then turn solid, killing both parties but leaving the original character intact.

Spoony mentioned tonight something about that. How they've introduced changes into 4ed to make it a little more unbalanced.

Have you heard anything about Red Box? I'd heard nothing about it except the title, but apparently it's not the 5th edition so many people feared.
