In support of International Women's Day I thought I would post five women who have made an incredible contribution to geekiness.

1. Anne Rice

Wrote proper vampires

2. Gail Simone

Not only one of the best female comic book writers but one of the best comic book writers

3. Mary Shelley

Invented a character (Frankenstein's Monster) that was so cool it could stand alongside The Mummy and The Wolfman

4. Gale Anne Hurd

Wrote the screenplay for the first Terminator movie.

5. Jane Goodman

Helped write the screenplay for my favourite action movie of 2011, X-men First Class as well as giving Hit Girl some of her most memorable moments in "Kick-ass" and also wrote "Stardust" proving women can write awesome action movie blockbusters.

There are heaps of cool women in science fiction/fantasy (I couldn't fit Ursula K leGuin, Marjorie Liu or JK Rowling on my list) but here are five of my favourites. What are yours?

Joan Jett, Courtney Love
edit, i didnt realize this pertained to geekiness not pop culture in general

I never liked Anne Rice's "take" on vampires.

Rice's Vampires aren't the "proper" vampire, but they're closer than the *****epires of recent years. Simone's okay, I'd probably like her more if she got over the "woman" part and just let herself be one of the best creators of today. Frankenstein is actually bigger than the Mummy and the Wolfman due to his existence before becoming a Universal monster. Never heard of the last two, but nobody should be proud of Hit-Girl.

Kick Ass is a shameful entry into the realm of superhero fiction.

Tina Fey should be on this list.

Not a bad list, I think mine would be something like like:

J.K. Rowling (for creating such a hugely popular literary and pop culture icon)
Gail Simone (for writing some of the best women centered superhero comics)
Nancy Cartwright (Voice of Bart and other cartoon characters)
Sigourney Weaver (for cementing the image of a bad ass scifi heroine.)
Felicia Day (I know people either hate or love her, but she's the geek goddess I'd make babies with.)

More than the chick who wrote Terminator.

Wait, is this the 5 coolest women of pop culture, or the 5 coolest women of geek culture?

Cuz save for Tina Fey, my 5 coolest women of pop culture would look drastically different methinks.

It's more of an opinion thread, so pop culture could mean whatever you want it to mean (which really just means any public figure, and possibly any fictional characters as well).

If it's nerd culture, then the list should include D. C. Fontana, J.K. Rowling, Mary Shelley, Gail Simone, and Rumiko Takahashi.

If it's pop culture period, then it would be a very different list.
