This definitely captures the feel of the 80's era Amblin movies, from the story, to the humour to the heart it's all here, they even managed to make the love story work despite Zoe not having a load of screen time, and I thought the emotional stakes were beautifully played once Ruffalo comes into the movie as the Adam's Dad, you think about all the things you might say if you had the chance to see your Dad one more time, but my favourite scene was the one between Adam and his Mom at the bar, really well acted by Reynolds and Jennifer Garner, I think the theme at the centre of this film will resonate with most viewers of a certain age.
I find Reynolds to be hit and miss, much like Chris Pratt, both have an overreliance on irreverent, sarcastic humour if not kept in check by the director, but like in Free Guy I felt Levy got the best out of Reynolds, finding the balance between the humour, the seriousness and the sincerity while also being an action hero.
The action is decent and well shot, never exceeding the limits of the movies budget, the fights in particular were crisply done and the aerial sequence were pretty slick. My favourite sequences though was the chase with a nod to a cult 80's movie, MOTU!
