Serkis and Jackson Reunite for Tintin
Source: Variety, The Hollywood Reporter December 15, 2007

Peter Jackson is set to reteam with his performance-capture star Andy Serkis for DreamWorks' Tintin trilogy, based on Georges Remi's Belgian comic-strip. Steven Spielberg and Jackson will each helm at least one of the three films, though the specific lineup is unknown.

Serki provided the human expression and movements behind such CG characters as Gollum in the director's "The Lord of the Rings" trilogy and the big ape in King Kong.

The studio was mum on which character or characters the actor will play but said it will not be the titular Tintin. It is believed Serkis will play the role of Capt. Haddock, the temperamental sea captain.

The films will chronicle the adventures of Tintin, a junior reporter who will follow stories even though he often finds his own life in jeopardy.

Principal photography on the first film is scheduled to begin in September.

Films will be based on three stories from "The Adventures of Tintin" series by Remi, who wrote under the pen name of Herge, and will be produced in full digital 3-D using performance capture technology. Jackson's New Zealand-based WETA Digital will provide the f/x work, which will commence before the September start date.

Spielberg and Jackson are producing Tintin alongside Kathleen Kennedy.

Serkis as Haddock. Hmm, dunno. But this is going to be motion capture so maybe it'll work.

Personally, I think they should a more modern character.

Like Aluminumaluminum! ;)

Better than Serkis, Ray Winstone as Captain Haddock or Gerard Depardieu!

How are they gonna do that front cowlick of Tintin's without it looking goofy? Or will that be the idea? ;)

They might do it like they did in the first films....

I saw La Toison D'or and Les Oranges Bleues long ago...gosh they were boring... hope Jackson and Speilberg put our favorite journalist (errr,I mean full mega king super spy secret agent judo master doing many things but journalism) back on right tracks!

I'm extremely curious who they're gonna cast. Serkis as Haddock could work, because it's motion capture...

Andy Serkis Talks Tintin
And a little bit of Hobbit too

We got the chance to catch up with Andy Serkis recently and, when not trying to coerce him into recording Gollum answerphone messages, we spoke to him about his role in the upcoming trilogy Tintin.

Though he's keeping schtum on his actual role (it's strongly rumoured that he'll play Captain Haddock), he did say that he's already started work on the project in New Zealand.

"It was on the Avatar stage," Serkis told us, referring to James Cameron's currently shooting 3D CG sci-fi bonanza. "We had this incredible week. Cameron was there, Peter Jackson was there (who's directing one of the three Tintin films), and Steven Spielberg was there (who's directing another). All in the same room!"

Which means that the film will be using the same technology as Avatar, which shows the characters in their (almost) final form on monitors, even though they're only in lycra body stockings on set. "You're on a bare, empty stage with actors standing around in blue Lycra with dots on, but [on the monitor] the director is looking into a fully rendered, three-dimensional virtual set, with the actors as their characters".

It would be too much to hope that Cameron's involvement at this early stage might mean he'll direct the third film. Wouldn't it?

Obviously, we also had to ask Serkis about the possibility of reprising his role as Gollum for the upcoming Hobbit movie. The character appears briefly in the book, playing a riddle game with Bilbo. Though there's no script and no certainty that he'll be written into it, Serkis says "I think I'd find it very hard to turn down the opportunity to play Gollum again, because he's become very much a part of me. For good or bad, he's still very much there!".

Really looking foward to this. :woot:

Spielberg Now Directing First Tintin Movie! Serkis Confirmed As Captain Haddock!

It seems there has been quite a big a shake up on the upcoming Tintin trilogy. It was thought that Peter Jackson would be directing the first movie after he had finished work on The Lovely Bones, but it now appears that is not the case and Spielberg will be the man in the directors chair for the first outing. This could be due to a number of reasons, but the one that sticks out is that Peter Jackson may want to get started on The Hobbit now the writers strike is over. It may also explain why Spielberg’s The Trial of the Chicago 7 has been delayed. This information comes from actor Andy Serkis, who spoke to IndieLondon about the films. Serkis, who has worked with Peter Jackson before on a number of films such as King Kong and Lord Of The Rings, also confirmed that he will be playing Captain Haddock.

Q. Are you going to be reuniting with Peter Jackson again for Tintin?
Andy Serkis: In fact tomorrow I’m flying out to start on Tintin. Steven Spielberg is directing the first one, and then Peter Jackson is doing the second. The bulk of the shoot starts in September but things got a little bit moved around after the writers’ strike.

Q. Were you at all worried when Peter first got back in touch that having played Gollum and King Kong, he might ask you to play Snowy the dog?
Andy Serkis: [laughs] Absolutely, in fact people assume that I am, which is even more disturbing [he’s playing Captain Haddock].

I honestly CANNOT wait for this. I LOVE TinTin and I can't wait to see how this turns out...
We have Peter Jackson AND Steven Spielberg working on the SAME trilogy...HOLY SMOKES. This movie is basically garunteed to be awesome. It would be absolutely insane if they got cameron on board to direct the 3rd movie! :wow:

Good news. I'm VERY curious to see how this will turn out. Serkis as Haddock is a good choice. If he can do Gollum and Kong, the tough alcoholic sailor voice shouldn't be any problem.

But I'll say it again; If they give TinTin a love interest I will force Jackson and Spielberg to shave their beards.

Peter doesn't mind, he shaved it off for his King Kong cameo (although he moaned about looking like a porn star when his moustache was still on). I'm sure it'll be a faithful adaptation: no appendices featuring a romance here like Tolkien.

You know I suggested Bell months ago on another board.

P.S.:

Jamie Bell would be a great Tin Tin. But you need to remember this is a 3d animated photorealistic type movie so they could get anyone.

Let us hope they don't cast Shia Labeouf. I have a feeling Steven Spielberg will cast him. If that happens I won't bother to watch this movie.

he already played a similar role in King Kong. he wasn't a full blown alcoholic sailor, but he was a cigarette smoking cook on a ship...hehe

I never liked Tintin so much but i think this two Monster Directors could do something interesting with the Source Material.......and i can´t wait how Camerons new 3-D Motion Capture Stuff will turn out.

i feel the same. never much cared for Tintin, but the biggest 3 directors on the planet today teaming up together to do 1 movie is something that any proud nerd cannot pass up on...

...especially if this ends up being stereoscopic 3d.

isn't the Lincoln biopic with Liam Neeson supposed to be the next Spielberg film ?

I'm hoping that they keep Tin TIn's look intact and not 'Beowulf' him.

Zemeckis never had a definitive visual reference for Beowulf. Tintin's look, on the other hand, has already been established.

I meant, aesthetically, keep Tin Tin's dot eyes..his goofy hair.

Perhaps, I picked the wrong example, but what I meant is don't make it too realistic. Maybe it could be a surrealistic merging of artsy and reality...I don't know.
