Action-Adventure The All Encompassing Zorro thread

I was thinking V for Vendetta meets Judge Dredd... where only the 'judges' have guns

Well...

But yeah, I agree. Again, I think they would be smart to keep Zorro very low tech to juxtapose him against a Sci Fi future. It certainly would raise the stakes dramatically.

I know he uses guns in the past, but it's different when they're one-shot flintlocks. Futuristic usually implies assault weapons or ray guns, neither of which I'm real keen on seeing Zorro use. I don't want to see him shooting bullet Z's into a wall.

Has it been said it will be a cyberpunk future or something closer to Children of Men?

As stated, I agree. Him using a lazer gun or a machine gun, as practical as it would be honestly would rob the distinctive traits of the character, who even though there have been glosses on the character, like the serial that put him in 1940's L.A., where he was not in his Old California setting, is iconic for being a cunning rogue of a swordsman. And I think again, there's a chance to work that in dramatically and perhaps even dramatically theme wise into such a film.

An outlaw in a future world living "off the grid" so as to not be part of a system that tracks an individual's every movement, where he must use methods that bypass all the high tech security apparatus could play into the theme of inspiring the masses etc. Hell... Keep Tornado even. Have scenes where the forces he's fighting against have advanced transportation of some kind but Zorro makes them look like fools riding his horse into the rough terrain and disappears into the hinterlands or some such.

Again... I don't want to make this out to be a slam dunk of a concept. It's about how it is executed. But I don't think there's anything inherently stupid or wrong in doing a version of Zorro in the future. And even my suggestion that they keep it "old school"? Eh... Maybe that's not how the creators see it? Maybe they find a way to keep the essence of Zorro as the master swordsman and swashbuckling figure but he also has some kind of futuristic update that fits the character? I'm open to it all. And if this fails I am confident someone will come along with a new version of this perennial American made hero in the near future.

I'd watch Zorro shooting a Z into a wall using a flintlock.

He could also just load multiple guns and use each one after each shot.

Ehh, not so sure about this.

It sort of makes sense, get all Batman Beyond with it for something a little different, I just for whatever reason can't get into it conceptually. But I think that's less to do with it being a problem to set Zorro specifically in a new setting, and more just like "there are plenty of futuristic/dystopian/cyberpunk movies out there, and we don't often get cool Mexican-American 1840s/50s movies".

Zorro has a bit of a different flavor to your usual western, so it'd be cool to get more of that stuff. Futuristic's just...sure, Zorro can be futuristic, I guess? But what's even the point?

The same point as the SHERLOCK and ELEMENTARY series?

After so many versions that mostly all hew to the classic version to try something... Different. Could it suck? Yeah. Could also be great. Or mediocre. Can't judge til I've seen it or at least a trailer.

Sounds like a futuristic update like what they did win the nineties with the Phantom animated series.

Sure, you can do it. But why? There are plenty of current-set eccentric-detective shows (all mostly taking elements from Sherlock anyway).

Might as well keep the classic in his period piece setting, given you don't see as much of it anymore.

*Shrugs* Just personal preference, I guess. Curious to see this anyway, any Zorro is welcome Zorro. Just sort of reeks a little of what they did with that Phantom show a while back. Like...it's not some egregious change in and of itself that ruins anything, just also comes off a little arbitrary and pointless.

I see your avy is from BATMAN: THE ANIMATED SERIES.

How do you feel about BATMAN BEYOND? Personally... It was never for me. But I don't begrudge it's fans. My mindset is... I don't want to see a future tech Batman but apparently my tastes are not indicative of the fans out there that had no problem with it. So too here I suspect if the trailer shows us something worth watching.
I have only seen few episodes and it was ok. I watched the first episode Rebirth on Youtube and maybe few other episodes on tv many years ago. It was great to see Kevin Conroy as old Bruce Wayne and the future Batman suit looks cool.

Does it? Post apocalyptic land could be like the old wild west. Go back to basics. I agree if Zorro was set in this modern setting a motorbike would be the right answer.

This is what I'm leaning towards now. That said, I'm open to some snazzy future tech updates too if they come off well. I just think that it'd be more cool and inspiring if Future Zorro used a low tech approach.
