Character you would like to play: James Buchanan Barnes, aka Captain America
Powers: Enhanced strength, agility, durability, longetivity (slower aging), tactically skilled mind and expert hand-to-hand combatant. The superhuman powers are heredity, so they're not as potent as generally portrayed.
Basic history of the character (Up until this point): From the original app:
In the winter of 1945, James Rogers was born to America's greatest hero. The son of army veteran Steve Rogers and reporter Gail Richards, the infant was instantly christened as the nation's first son on account of his father's integral part in survivng the recently ended second World War. Called "Bucky" by Steve on account of his love for the Buck Rogers movie serials, the first few years of James' life were relatively pleasant. He and his mother would often attend social functions and charities with Steve, introducing James to a world no other child was ever quite familiar with - the world of real life superheroes. For a time, James adored his father, who finally retired his duties as 'Captain America' in the spring of 1957 to settle down and raise his son.
Then Vietnam came. Under intense military pressure, Rogers struggled with the decision to once again go to war and lead a batallion into the conflict between the Northern and Southern parties. Despite the decision never being quite made, word spread fast that Captain America would return, and some have since theorized that this contributed to the tragedy that would happen next. While negotiating his terms with government forces on the decision itself, Steve Rogers was assassinated by a sharpshooter's bullet. The country instantly mourned their fallen hero, but it was his family that was affected most. No one cried the hardest on that day than little James, who didn't know Rogers as "Cap"... just as his father.
Fearing a conspiracy as the battle in the war grew harsh, President Lyndon B. Johnson personally convinced Rogers' widow that she and her young son were not safe, and relocated them from Washington to Iowa under assumed aliases - They became Barnes family as a result, and quietly resumed their lives amongst their tragic circumstances. As Gail continued to age, it soon became apparent that her son would not, prompting her decision to keep the boy in private school and become a shut-in herself. By 1995, when James should have been 50 years old, he left home to finally start his life as a 21-year old college graduate. He married, then divorced, and moved to New York City within a five year period in the hopes of becoming a medical technician.
But even after all of his time in hiding, Barnes was being watched. Both by kindred spirits and a hostile threat. Isaiah Bradley, a top ranking member of the CIA, was personally overseeing a top-priority project called "Rebirth", designed to recreate the circumstances that gave birth to the original Captain America. Though it hadn't been immediately apparent, Bradley suspected and later confirmed that Rogers' son had carried his father's superhuman abilities through blood. Though his superiors wanted to use a sample of Barnes' blood to simply carry on the recreation of a super-soldier serum, Bradley saw potential in the (seemingly) young man. It wasn't until tragedy would later revisit the Rogers family that he was assured he could turn James into the successor to his father's mantle.
Gail Richards-Barnes, who was never one to leave her home, was instantly targeted by a rogue organization that had discovered the true location of the Rogers family. Before Bradley and his CIA superiors could warn Barnes of the impending attack, Gail was overpowered by a towering masked assassin calling himself Crossbones. Though he went in with the intention of a kill, the assassin allowed her to live in order to send a message to those who would discover her, choosing to instead inflict trauma that would induce the elderly woman into a comatose state. James, discovering what happened, angrily demanded answers from Bradley. The CIA agent revealed his true ties to an organization called HAMMER, and offered James a chance to face down the age-old organization that had been believed to have killed his father and attacked his mother - Hydra. After initial refusal, Barnes eventually turned around on his decision and agreed to become an operative for HAMMER until he could dismantle Hydra and prevent them from hurting his family again.
It has been three years since, and James Barnes has only recently completed an extensive training regimine. He is now a master hand-to-hand martial artist, an expert tactician, and the only man alive truly worthy of suceeding the late Steve Rogers as America's champion - The new Captain America.
Since donning the costume, James repeatedly found himself in direct confrontation with HAMMER's chain of command, finding their agenda to go against the morals and standards he was meant to represent. As this was going on, he was contacted by someone far more secretive and elusive: Nick Fury, the legendary Director of the long-forgotten spy organization SHIELD, who asked Barnes to leave HAMMER and head Fury's latest project, the Avenger Initiative.
Eventually Barnes left HAMMER after joining forces with several other super-heroes to defeat the Super Skrull in New York, blatantly defying Director 13's orders and becoming a fugitive. This wasn't helped when he broke fellow hero Miss Marvel out of the metahuman prison in Genosha Bay, or when he shot Director 13 in the stomach for threatening his mother's life, while attempting to stop the vile Nazi supervillain Red Skull from invading San Francisco.
Finally, Barnes was caught up in a plot by HYDRA and one of its leaders, Baron Zemo, to cripple the Western World with an EMP blast, using Nick Fury himself as a mole to head off SHIELD at every turn. When Fury learned he had been duped, he sabotaged HYDRA's stolen nuclear warhead to go off with him still inside the launch silo, entrusting Barnes and the Avengers to set the country right.
Now on the lam from HAMMER and still being skewered by the media, Captain James Buchanan Barnes seeks to prove himself to a country split between those who think him a hero and those who want him in prison. Living in an abandoned SHIELD facility beneath the old Stark Family Mansion, he's adjusting to his new role in the world, as a leader of the Avengers, as a major force in the 'superhero' debate......and as the 21st Century's Captain America.
Why Have You Chosen That Character?: Because Cap rules, and always has. He's an excellent character and you can tell all kinds of stories with him, not just for who the person is and what he can do, but for all the different things he represents. Though hopefully I can come up with some good stuff without just making it a ham-fisted political soapbox like so many other people when they write Cap.
What Do You Plan On Doing With This Character (IE: How are you changing him or her?): He's going to be taking an active role as the unofficial leader of the Avengers, trying to root out and destroy the remaining forces of HYDRA, and find out what happened to Red Skull. Also, I imagine the Avengers and the Ultimates will be butting heads at some point, so Cap will definitely be on the front lines there.
Two Complete Sentences Explaining What You Can Bring To This RPG (As A Player): My name is Andy C. I'm the best at what I do. But what I do......is write nerdy-ass RPG storylines.
Please provide a small sample post in the format you wish to portray your character in (Minimum three paragraphs/one line of dialogue, maximum six paragraphs):
Captain America sat anxiously in the bunker below the old Stark Mansion. Since his address to the nation, he had been tracking down potential allies, getting in contact with the heroes from the battle in Times Square. He knew he could rely on Iron Man to be on board with the team, and he believed he could trust Thor--if he could ever find him--but so many of the others had been much harder to locate again.
Fortunately, the communicators that he had been given by Nick Fury when this all began had proven a valuable asset. And a hypersonic jet that could be piloted remotely to locations all across the world certainly didnt hurt.
The Mansions integrated computer system gave him notice of activity in the hangar bay, and he leapt from his seat in excitement. Scrambling down the corridors and into the large bay, he saw the massive doors open as the Quinjet swooped in gracefully. Not bad for an autopilot.
As the jet touched down, the loading ramp extended, and out came three individuals.
Miss Marvel, the former HAMMER agent that Bucky had rescued from the prison in Genosha Bay.
The Vision, the elusive android whom he had encountered on board the Helicarrier.
And, much to Buckys chagrin
.Hawkeye, the insufferable crack-shot who had brought Cap to Fury in the first place.
As they stepped off of the ramp and took in the sight of the hangar, Captain America approached them.
Youre the first ones to arrive, he said, smiling.
Welcome to the team. Welcome to the Avengers.
