The Artist (2011) - A silent film!

Ambitious idea and I'm glad that they're being hailed as a great movie but I won't see it. I'm one of the those people who would get really bored seeing it.

How do you know that unless you see it?

They look awesome! The acting is superb, the cinematography beauty full, and the music is both original and yet feels like the classics.

Saw this last night.

Absolutely brilliant. It's not just the acting, it's the form. A really bold move on the part of the filmmaker, a simple yet efficient story with great actors (notable appearance by Malcolm McDowell as an extra).

It's a wonderful homage to cinema (and not just the silent years, but just cinema in general).

I'm a big fan of early classics such as Nosferatu, Sunrise, The Last Laugh, Metropolis etc. so I'm kind of used to watching silent films and I can understand some people's concerns over "getting bored" watching them. I've fallen asleep while watching average silent films before, but that wasn't because they were silent, rather because they were average. I had tremendous fun watching The Artist, and you will too. Give it a try. It's smart, funny and original.

And here I thought Drive would be my favourite movie of the year... This takes the cake, easily.

I'm also a great admirer of Dujardin (He's well known for his comedic talents, but really underrated when it comes to dramas. Watch Contre-Enquête or Le Convoyeur). He quite simply blew me away on that one.

And on a related note...

What exactly are you waiting for, Eon??? (I know, I know... Craig's great, and Dujardin's English is crap)

This looks great. I'm interested.

The Best Picture, Best Director and Best Actor Oscar nominations looks to be closer and closer.

Saw it last night. It's fun, charming, and even touching, but I don't know where this best picture of the year buzz is coming from. It's slight, the protagonist is surprisingly passive, the love story is barely developed, and its own winking "hey look, we're making a silent movie" self awareness draws attention away from the story and back on the form sometimes undercutting the story.

Plus, there ought to be a law against blatantly taking the music from VERTIGO for the climax of a new movie. That's not even a silent movie score. Likewise, why are you blatantly homaging CITIZEN KANE in a tribute to silent movies?

Once the novelty wears off, I think there's going to be a reappraisal of some of the very real problems of the movie.

That said, I would encourage people to see it all the same. There are plenty of charms to be had here. Dujardin, for instance, is great. Bejo is very good as well. And the dog Uggie practically steals the movie from both of them. It's well paced. It is funny. And it certainly is novel.

It's not SINGIN' IN THE RAIN though, which covers similar material much better. Watch that with one of the good versions of A STAR IS BORN and you'll have what THE ARTIST was aiming for.

So, has anyone managed to see it since it's expanded to more screens?

I found the one theater near me it's actually playing at. Hoping to catch it at some point this week.

LOVED this movie!!

Jean Dujardin is now officially my pick for Best Actor. That dog deserves something too, lol.

I loved this movie. The story is so simple, but so engrossing that you actually forget that you're watching a silent film. It was just beautifully done.

It's a really good movie, but I wouldn't say it's great nor "Best Picture" worthy. The film is all flash with little to no substance.

better than the Fass:cmad:
Yes, imo, because he was channeling a style of performance that doesn't even really exist anymore, and doing it brilliantly. But Fassbender's my #2 pick, so I'm kinda rooting for both of them. He was so good in Shame. Sadly, Fassy doesn't stand a chance for anything other than a nomination, whereas I still have hope that Dujardin could trump the Clooney/Pitt love with the voters.

Since Shannon (who IMO gave the best male performance of the year) will most likely not be nominated anyway, I'm totally onboard with Dujardin winning. He is the best out of the ones that will most likely be nominated (him, Clooney, Pitt, Di Caprio, Fassy/Gosling/Oldman).

Dujardin looks like a young Walt Disney in this. I need to check this movie out as it looks pretty damn good.

Saw this last weekend. Loved it. It takes a minute to adjust to the lack of sound, but the visuals and performances are plenty engrossing. Beautifully done.

Another great film that honors old cinema, It has a charming straightforward story with amazing performances. The issues they bring up of old Hollywood vs new Hollywood was fantastic. My only gripe about the film is that it feels a bit short and there wasn't enough of title cards (but I see why they did it). Overall It's a must see for anyone and I can't wait to see this win best picture at the Oscars.

9/10

While good with a nice simple story, it's easy to see why critics are drooling over this. It's a silent film. Though told very well and well directed, it's not quite a stand out film to me. The only reason it stands out is because there are no silent films anymore. As a silent film compared to others that I've seen, it's not anything special, though I can see why people see it is. It cleverly tells the story of old vs new within the silent film so that had that going for it. But I think Tree of Life and War Horse deserve Best Picture more. But this is going to win Best Picture.
