The Avengers The Avengers re-named in the UK ..........

I would have called The Avengers Initiative

Lol, with all due respect, the British have a history of taking already great things and making them worse. They did that with curry, McDonald's franchises, dentistry, even the English language. Now this! :oldrazz:

Uh huh. No no, do go on.

At least people know its about the avengers. Couldve been worse

They should change it to "John Carter of Mars", I hear that isn't taken.

They did it because there has already been a film consisting of characters more near and dear to UK citizens hearts, called "the Avengers" ... of course "Avengers Assemble" sounds corny as a title. Because it IS corny. Whether they say it in the film or as a title. But it's not a big deal. I just don't understand why they get the film so much sooner.

There was an Avengers movie back in 1998, with Ralph Finnes as Steed and Uma Thurman as Emma Peel, with Sean Connery as a bad guy who controls the weather. It was bad.

Maybe I should edit it to mean a half decent Avengers movie not obsessed with 60s kitch. :woot:

I think people are underestimating how pervasive the Avengers are in UK culture. I swear everytime a new Doctor Who companion is announced the Radio Times tries to compare their chemisty to Steed and Peel

But won't the movie be the same as the america one..its not like they speak another language in the United Kingdom..Im suprise more ppl are not offended the avengers overseas is coming out before the US release...wouldnt that leak the story out before its intended audience gets to see it?

Yeah, they are very ingrained into British culture. More so than people might realise, even if the series was a while ago and the 1998 movie was a flop.

And any non comic fan I talk to about the Avengers always thinks I'm referring to the Steed and Mrs Peel franchise.

It would be almost like an American comic that had a character named Doctor Who who was entirely different character to the UK one and then trying to compete with the name that has been built up over here over 40 years.

Yeah, I've had that a lot since Iron-Man. I start talking about The Avengers and they think I'm pining for Patrick Macnee's bowler hat and Honor Blackman's kinky boots.

Anyways, the 'Assembled' add-on is a bit naff. Could have just dropped 'The' from the title.

And Canada...:oldrazz:

I can understand why it was changed for the UK market, but they could have chosen something better than "Avengers Assemble". It just doesn't sound like a Movie Title for some reason.

I always found it interesting when a film comes out with the same title of an earlier film. It can't be that difficult to do some research to see if the name is already used and opt for something slightly different that will still convey what the film is about.

Just for fun. Here are some films with the same title

I think the difference is that those other examples are just relatively common terms rather than representing a franchise with a specific title.

Now the British Avengers might not be doing anything right now, but the show still makes money in syndication and so on, and the franchise does still have a fan base here. I would imagine that is the reason for the change. Not so much about avoiding confusion, but avoiding a time consuming legal argument from whoever owns the British Avengers rights.

Yeah, The British Avengers does well with repeats, it was even initially shown on primetime TV in America during the 60's. The Simpsons even referenced the show and also The Prisoner.

Anyway, we UK'ers are used to name changes:

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles = Teenage Mutant Hero Turtles
Top Cat = Boss Cat
Star Fox 64 = Laylat Wars
Smallville = Smallville: Superman The Early Years
Lois & Clark = The New Adventures of Superman
Snickers = Marathon
The Avengers = Avengers Assembled

This could be called Iron Man and friends and I wouldn't give a damn. This film looks bananas! Can't wait.

Or "Tony Stark Presents Iron Man and the Avengers"

I'd still see it 10 times...>LOLs

Ha! The word "ninja", too violent for a children's program. :whatever:

Those in red, we had those names changed in Australia too.

Eureka = A Town Called Eureka.

It's going to be weird when the UK media says 'Avengers Assembled', but come to think about it, it's similar to 'Batman Begins'.

More examples of name changes:

X2 = X2: X-Men United = X-Men 2
Fast Five = Fast & Furious: Rio Heist
Batman Beyond = Batman of the Future
Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone = HP and the Sorcerer's Stone (it was changed to Sorcerer's Stone in America)

One of the things I thought was cool about the Sorcerers Stone change was that, in the film version, they didn't just change the title and nothing else, but they actually shot extra takes for the American version for the name change.

Also I think GI Joe in the 1980s was Action Force, was it not? That one I can live with.

If you're talking about the figures, it was Action Man, not Action Force. Action Force was a smaller 5" line. Action Man was the 12" dolls.

I remember Action Force, but preferred the G.I Joe name, which came over here and replaced Action Force in the early 90's. The opening of the G.I Joe animated film had vocals, but Action Force version in the UK only had a instrumental theme.

YO JOE sounds better than FULL FORCE.
