The best Avenger comics to get? (For someone who's never read the comics?)

Put me in the camp of not recommending The Ultimates.

Tries too hard to be edgy.

So many good suggestions, thank you all so much, you are really helpful :)!
I'm trying to get Ultron Unlimited now but I can't buy it in my country. Do you know any good site that sell Ultron Unlimited (that can ship to Sweden)? I looked on amazon but I get the feeling 75$ (shipping not included) is a bit excessive?

You might try MidtownComics.com, not sure if it would be any cheaper than Amazon though. If you're not opposed to digital comics, they probably have that story on comixology.com. No shipping costs that way at least.

Hey you're entitled to your opinion, maybe they are a bit overrated, but you can't deny the success that book had, and that's down to the fact it was pretty good, but I do only recommend Ultimates 1 and 2, stuff got weird after that.

There is also no denying the impact this line had on the MCU, Nick Fury spent a good 45 years being white in the main 616 Marvel Universe before Iron Man the movie came out, he was black for only 7 years in the Ultimate line by that time and the MCU went with that version of the character.

For me, The Ultimate line as a whole started out great, I'm also taking about Ultimate Spiderman, Ultimate X-Men and Ultimate FF, I was digging them all, then quality took a huge nose dive and I haven't read them since.
I'm a huge fan of Bendis' early Ultimate Spider-Man work. It did a great job modernizing the early days of Spider-Man while effectively capturing what made Spider-Man great.

The Ultimates on the other hand, I share the same problems with it that Corp does. Everyone is just too much of a dickbag in that series. While the Avengers movies borrow elements of the Ultimates into the series, they are still the characters we love and know at heart, unlike the Ultimates.

Yeah I totally agree, only elements from The Ultimates are used in the MCU, the actual MCU characters are true to the original source, (thank God), I was just stating my case for how the movies borrowed elements, like Nick Fury being black, Hawkeye being a S.H.I.E.L.D agent e.t.c.

I still stand by me thinking The Ultimates wasn't that bad, for me it was a good read, but I can't deny your point on the fact they made The Avengers really unlikeable jerks, it's true.

I have oh-so many problems with the Ultimates beyond them just being jerks like:

- How I feel that Mark Millar is an untalented hack who tries to be edgy for the sake of being edgy. IMO, he's like the Rob Liefeld of comic book writing, someone who fit very well for the 90's, but never moved on to evolve and improve his technique. Honestly, the only competent works of his that I've read are Superman: Red Son (actually good), Civil War (not good, but competent), and his Fantastic Four run (boring, but not awful).

- I'm not a big fan of Bryan Hitch. I find his style to be both a muddy mess and quite boring.

- I honestly have no respect for a series plagued with as many delays as Millar's Ultimates.

- As a part of the Ron Paul faction of the Republican Party, I'm more than happy to criticize the foreign policy of the neo-conservatives. But Millar's critiques on neo-conservatives are just utterly childish.

- So many stupid concepts like the Liberators, cannibal Hulk, ugly character designs, the "Chitauri" instead of Skrulls, etc.

Millar and Hitch were fresh and new when The Ultimates came out. It was a no brainer for Marvel to put them together on an Ultimatized version of the Avengers after the success of The Authority.

Since then we've seen much more of their work and a lot of what you say is hard to argue against.

Like I said, I stopped reading after book 2, read a little bit of book 3 but the whole Quicksilver/ Scarlet Witch incest thing really was the final nail for me, you're right about stupid concepts as well, I'm led to believe they had a character called 'Nerd Hulk' ugh! Whilst I hear what you're saying, I still liked the first two books, that's just my opinion man, I'm not asking everyone to agree with me.

To be fair to Millar, he had nothing to do with Ultimates 3. I find it hilarious that Loeb essentially made Millar look subtle in comparison.
