This one was probably my least favorite episode of the series. I love the show's balance of dark humor with actual darkness and this one went too far in the second direction for my tastes. We already saw John/Homelander confront his creator in season 2, so going back and torturing Vogelbaum's subordinates was overkill for me. It seems like a scene from the bad The Boys comic rather than the good The Boys TV show.
The rest of the episode didn't land for me either. After dumping Butcher early on, MM needed him back on the team to find a news story about Firecracker's statutory rape? Victoria Newman might be right, they are getting worse at their jobs. I also didn't like the reveals about Butcher's experimenting with Compound V and Annie's abortion. Both would have worked better if the audience were let in on this info earlier. And while I thought it was wonderful that Hughie was the perfect, supporting boyfriend during Annie's difficult decision, it would have been more interesting if she didn't tell Hughie, or if she was afraid of being killed by a newborn with laser eyes or something.
I know Kripke said this season would get dark, but I hope the remaining shows are more balanced.
