Oh, so poor people need help now? I thought you said that we are all capable of moving up in life? Wouldn't that poor person be poor because they didn't try hard enough?

You again ignore the wider issues that contribute to poverty.

Help would be access to training, education, initial transportation to their jobs. I am all for giving everyone who is poor access to free education, free jog training and free transportation to work till they can get on their feet.

Give everyone who qualifies free bus/trolley/train passes, free job training, and cheaper if not free college tuition.

UC is a college?

Well that wouldn't be surprising since college is one of the few places where Che shirts are expected.

But people grow out of it unlike the confederate flag.

University of California system i.e. Berkley, UCLA, UC IRvine and UCSD.

The Confederate flag and Che tshirts should both be banned. Although people wearing said memorabilia is an easy way to pick out the idiots in our society. It's a tough choice.

I believe in freedom of speech. They shouldn't be banned. But people who use them should be shamed. You can say whatever you want... it's a free country... but I'm also free to call you a total moron.

They do because all three men make their living on essentially stirring the pot.

Why else would only these three men would be everywhere there is something that can be called an act of racism.

But what happens to racism if you get rid of Jesse, Sharpton and Farakhan?

Nothing. The only thinh lost is right wingers losing their precious strawmen.

How about this we are both right. Percentage of poor Black people are higher than Whites but their actually more poor white people.

Call me strange but I just don't see color I just a poor person who needs help.

No deal, because I won't buy into your false equivalence. You're not strange. You're just wrong. Listen to the people in this thread. They're doing you a favor by letting you know. Of course, going right back to Fox News will overwrite that fact in a few hours, I'm sure.

I don't think right wingers blame those men for racism. They do blame them for stirring the pot and profiting from it though. At least that is my main grip. They only seem to like fanning the issue.

I've seen kids wear Che shirts at Temple University...

Last page someone said doing something is better than nothing and ignoring it exists.

It deserves to be fanned! It's been over 50 years since the voting rights act, and black people are still more poor, in less positions of power, incarcerated more often, and given less opportunities. Someone needs to speak to the inequality happening in our society.
Sean Hannity and Bill Oreily are much more guilty of stirring up trouble by actually making people like you think that it's wrong to speak the truth, while it's okay to wave a racist flag... because... you know... racism is over in America...cause we have a black president now after all.

Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton use racism to further themselves though. They're camera hogs. That's not the kind of representation the black community needs.

Actually I do not watch Foxnews. Also I could give a damn what you think!
Finally what are your credentials that makes you more qualified than me!??

That flag is just an object. A object that is a symbol for multiple things. Some of what it represents is a disbanded army, a racist ideology, regional pride and a historical time period.

The flag shouldn't be flown on a government building simply because it doesn't represent an existing government. It really doesn't have any business being anywhere except in a museum, private property or at an Civil War reenactment event.

I don't see race bud. I see economics. Rich people only care if you are rich like they are! Remove poverty and under education and you will see crime rates drop like lead in water!

Media in general is guilty of fanning issues though it could be argued that in some cases they are simply exposing a problem that warrants discussion.

Less positions of power? Open your eyes, dude. Blacks have more opportunities than most other races...decades of affirmative action ring a bell? Open your eyes and stop playing this race card. And no one said racism is over--it will always be here, but Americans are a hell of a lot less tolerant of it than in other countries. They throw gays from the tops of buildings in Iran! I wonder how many of you in here would fare in these barbaric countries. Racism has gone from being a problem to being an excuse to stay in the bottom ranks and accept handouts rather than a hand up.

I'm pretty sure most black people wouldn't consider them representatives.

Sharpton goes where ever there's race-related controversy so people assume he's black people's chosen leader.

The thing is if there was an effective, charismatic black leader with integrity who lead black activism he would probably be assassinated after a short while.

Thank you!

The news media portrays him as that. The average African American consider him Jesse and Louis as "race hustlers"

The primary beneficiaries of Affirmative action are WHITE WOMEN.

Pretty much every bit of statistical data on race and opportunity debunks all the nonsense you're spewing.

This isn't even remotely true.

For one thing the average African American doesn't use the term "race hustler".

They way most African Americans feel about Jesse Jackson, Al Sharpton, and Louis Farrakhan is complicated. They've all done good work for out community but we also groan at the idea of them or anyone else being our self proclaimed "leaders".

And part of civil rights work is bringing attention which means bringing cameras. You shine a spotlight on a problem so that others see it and are hopfully outraged by the injustice taking place. THAT's what made the Civil Rights movement of the 60's so effective, Dr King and others brought attention to how brutal Jim Crow actually was and they shamed people out of their apathy and urged them to stand up for justice.

It's also worth noting that Dr King was also accused of being camera hog and self promoter.

Wow, are you serious? You need education. This is just plain ignorant.

Sure laugh, but poverty and a lack of education is probably the main reason behind all the crime rates.

And the War on Drugs.

I was actually laughing because you just said "remove poverty."

Which is about as easy as removing racism. Or wage inequality.

Obviously decreasing poverty would decrease the crime rate, but I think you miss the point on how to go about doing this. Not to mention that you and NYR94 see racism as an excuse for black people to stay poor. Which is incredibly racist, by the way. You might want to watch what you say.

Please explain when it's ok for people to use that word.

I just did.

It's a different context.

Instead of persecution it's used to relate to another black person.

Especially for underclass blacks.

When you see a white guy in a pick up truck with a "redneck" sticker on the back window are you tempted to lecture them on how derogatory the term is?
