And I'm not even using Nazi as a blanket term for people in Nazi Germany. Literally Nazis. People who belonged to the political party that espoused and carried out genocide. It's kind of weird.

I wish people would stop saying stuff like this. Nobody treated black people that they enslaved "well". Some obviously treated these people better than others but they were still enslaved, exploited for profit and seen as inferior to white people.

Robert E. Lee only had slaves because he inherited them from his father-in-law. And he only inherited them because he was required to do so, he never wanted them. He viewed slavery as a moral and political evil. He worked to educate his slaves, freed them well before the Southern cause was seen as an inevitable lost cause, and was a strong advocate of having black soldiers in his army in return for freedom. While he opposed the American Abolitionist Movement, he still was not a supporter of slavery.

Not only that, but he also opposed the Confederacy and viewed it as anarchy. Unlike most of the Confederacy that fought for slavery, Lee fought for Virginia. Unlike most of the Southern aristocracy, slavery was not a part of Lee's identity because of his army career.

It's very telling that after those states started taking down confederate flags, many supporters of the flag started demanded that any monuments to civil rights workers or anything honoring enslaved blacks be taken down also.

Yeah, that's total bull. The Confederate flag has no place in public government facilities. Civil rights advocates deserve to be commemorated.

Nazism isn't a race or religion, but killing every last card-carrying member of the party sounds a little too homicidal, especially given the motives for which some people joined.

Even when they surrendered or be captured?
Considering that some of them are non-combatants (civilians including women and children), got tricked or coerced into joining or even redeemable, I would say wholesale and indiscriminate killing is pretty much evil ( I wouldn't call them genocide, though close enough ) and/or insane.

But if they weren't American anymore by virtue of seceding from the Union, then it wouldn't apply to them. That was the argument.

Untested legal claim that these States by choice disregarded letting the Courts have a say. Note that Entering the union took willing effort of Federal and States. Saying they could divorce without any input by the Feds is doubtful.
