The Critics' Reviews of Spider-Man 3 Thread

Just read the TIME magazine review...and I have to say, it pretty much sums up exactly how I feel and the reasons most "tough-guy" geeks fan-boys are complaining about the film. Corliss says the movie's main driving force is emotion...not action...and that's what I love about it. But, apparently, not something most "men" in this country like. No, they're too macho to embrace a hero with a soft side. Idiots...

I think it's funny that people are stating that Venom seemed tacked on, where I think Sandman was actually tacked 'in', he was almost completely worthless for the story beyond inciting Peter and pushing along the Venom story. They could have trimmed that out or even given some more time to Venom and Harry, most of the Sandman scenes felt out of place.

Though the movie was all over the place and overall I am disappointed, mostly due to Raimi's ham fisted melodrama and humor(almost slapstick), seeing a real superhero team-up gave me a slight geekasm :D

You want to know why it didn't impress me much?

I'm a very emotional person, so it wasn't that. I love drama.

I'm a huge Spider-Man fan, so it wasn't any of the Peter/MJ/Harry moments.

I HATE Venom, and I blame the shoehorning of that character into the plot for a lot of the problems with the film.

I love Sandman, and I blame them not putting him in as a central character in order to fit in Venom for the major problems in the film.

Overall, what ticked me off was that they basically did EXACTLY what I predicted they would: A "dark Spider-Man" plotline. OOOH! What if Spider-Man went all dark and almost became a villain... And then he meets a guy who IS an evil version of himself? What if, huh?

I'll tell you "what if"... You get the same weak "evil twin" storyline you get in EVERY film or TV show that tries to use the "evil version of the protagonist" story. It's always cliche. It's always lame. Doesn't matter if it's Superman, Bewitched, or Star Trek-- The very idea that your worst enemy is an evil version of yourself is ridiculous.

The acting was fine. The basic plot was OK, except for all the forced Venom stuff and the serious lack of anything to fill out the Sandman as a villain. What sucked was that this movie wasn't so much about Peter Parker, and more about that stupid symbiote and how it made him act, how it made Brock act, and how it affected Peter's life. This was a movie about a pile of alien goo from who-knows-where (talk about contrived- It just fell to Earth one day?!?!) and the people it screwed with.

Why did you want Venom so bad? You KNEW he had a weak storyline. Seriously-- What's to like about him? Most people who love him would say it's because he's "badass" or "wicked" or something else based on his looks and style, but where's the substance?

He HATES Spider-Man. He's an alien/human hybrid. That's about it. He's essentially a combination of a Terminator and an Alien Xenomorph, except black.

Face it: The movie was weak (not terrible, just weak) because they had to bend over backwards to make a 1-dimensional character like Venom into the main event. They had to flesh out the story (evil Peter Parker! Ooh!) and force events (Meteor in the park? How did Venom know about Marko's daughter?) and dance all around a halfway decent story to insert a character that couldn't stand on his own.

Venom COULD work. . . But only if they filmed the Secret Wars, and all of Peter's activities in the symbiote costume, and had Mr. Fantastic explain things to Pete, and made Eddie Brock more than just a loser with a grudge. . . But they couldn't do that. They had to wedge it all into two hours.

What's worse is that the role played by Venom could easily have been any other Spider-Man villain, and they could have spared us the whole "dark Peter" thing entirely. They could have made it Electro who felt rejected and angry at Spider-Man for ruining things, or Mysterio could have been gunning for Spider-Man because he was humiliated by him. . . But they were forced by Venom fans to make an ALIEN MONSTER fit into the story they were building up, and it fell in upon itself because the alien monster was just a step too far and too shallow as a plot device.

Venom was every problem with this movie. You wanted a badass image of Venom on the screen, and you got it. It's too bad there's not much to Venom than his look.

Out of all the critics in the world, I agree with the guy from box office mojo? What the heck is going on!

spider-man 3 was not great, and had some glearing flaws, but it was a good movie, action packed, very funny, emotional, and very entertaining.

This is the most heart breakingly worse review ever. I hope this reviewer gets hit with a rock.

Rex Reed is one of the most pretentious of all movie critics...I'd be more worried if he said he liked the film! He also hated BATMAN BEGINS and called it 'easily' the worst of the Batman films, so you can tell his level of knowledge and appreciation of comic book history and lore.

Strangely though Rex Reed did appear in a comic book film, in Richard Donner's SUPERMAN (1978) he is the reporter Clark Kent tries to shake hands with in the rotating entrance to the Daily Planet.

It's Brock sir, Edward Brock Jr. I'm here humbled and humiliated to ask you for one thing... I want you to kill these critics.

Thats what I meant when I said spiderman 3 has 4 villains. The critics being the fourth one.

lmao

I think the critics expected too much from SM3.

And this dance scene everyone is talkin about, my date loved it, and I liked it very much too.

best of the 3 Spidey flicks to me Harry/New Goblin and Brock/Venom really made this movie what it was pure ace thanks Raimi for not letting Spidey be overshadowed by the trilogy curse.

http://www.comicbookresources.com/news/newsitem.cgi?id=10472 Another GOOD review. Sorry if allready mentioned. I need to see this film again... I was a litle disapointed, but with a big smile in my face. Now I'm a litle lost... Is it THAT bad as some say? Or THAT good as other stated? I'm certain I didnt hated. It was really COOL. Not in par with the hype. But hardly ever could be. I need to see it again!

I agree with the critics. yeah the movie is faithful to the comics but umm..you need to put some quality and heart into a film instead of just focusing on putting in cool characters and having nice special effects (of course thats what studios due with pretty much every movie now). At least it was consistent with the first two and it was a hell a lot better then X3

That's where our opinions differ. To me it felt like a new director had stepped it. The style and tone was just completely different from the first two, well for me atleast.

Raimi went the X3 route, throw in tons of action scenes and a lacking story.

RT has SM 3 at 61 % critics, 71 % users. It has loss 8 % with users today. 3 % with critics.

You just explained what I have in my mind. Thanks. Thanks.

D!

You know what? I may be way out of line here...but...I'm going to say this...

to everyone that's seen the film or is going to see the film. Don't listen to anyone else...including the people posting here. Screw the critics. Screw all of our opinions. See the film...and decide for yourself based on your expectations and your appreciation of the film.

I went in expecting a great deal...and I was not let down in the least. And I am a lifelong Spidey fan...

Just see the film adn think for yourself...for once...

So the Sandman just leaves...great. Wonderful conclusion for that character and all his loose ends.

actually i disagree
I listened to all the negativity so I had low expectations, and that helped because the movie was awesome

well I don't take that one critic seriously after reading this

"There is one long, irrelevant and disruptive sequence in which no-talent Raimi sidekick Bruce Campbell appears as a French waiter that makes you wonder what these people were swallowing besides designer water"

its very funny to see critics telling the truth about this movie, and half of you saying 'oh there just being *****' 'oh im not taking there review seriously'. its a ****ty movie. ok? it IS.

Wow

and what parts of it were so bad?

well everything they thought bad I must have thought was good
so why do people listen to critics for such a subjective thing?

In reality, Bruce Campbell really isn't that talented. Hey, I loved the Evil Dead movies as much as the next guy, but truth is truth. And that part was OK if not just drawn out. Theres was just too much to put into the movie. I mean, you had to get Sandman, Harry, and Venom in there, along with symbiote suit Spiderman. One of them has to go, and it should have been Sandman. Because we already had a villian like him, Doc Ock in SM2.

Nothing against him, but we don't need another villain from which we can sorta understand his situation. Sandman was stealing money to help his daughter, he accidentally shot Ben, was just at the wrong time wrong place, not really a bad guy at heart. Its just a rehash of Doc Ock really. Take away him and focus more on the origins of the symbiote instead of having it just fall from space one day. Take away the piano playing, dancing scene, etc. The list is just too long, and I am too tired right now to go through what everyone already mentioned.
