Ted Danson will be joining the cast of the long-running procedural drama as the new supervisor -- a role filled by Fishburne and his predecessor William Petersen. Fishburne opted not to renew his contract after two-and-a-half seasons.

Danson's character joins the Las Vegas team as the new night-shift supervisor after working in Portland's crime lab. His character "comes to the team as they are still grappling with the professional and personal fallout from last season's take-down of serial killer, Nate Haskell," according to a CBS press release.

"CSI's" executive producer Don McGill gushed about his newest cast member, telling Us Weekly Danson "couldn't be more perfect" and brings "intelligence, wit, warmth, depth of character and emotion."

Danson is best known for his role as womanizer Sam Malone on "Cheers." He will continue to work on his HBO comedy "Bored to Death" while filming "CSI."

"CSI" returns to CBS on September 21. Are you excited about Danson joining the cast? Sound off in the comments below!

Ted Danson? That's a really odd choice. He doesn't seem clever or serious enough, but too much of a joker like Sam Malone even after all these years. I've stopped watching the original CSI years ago (but still watch Miami and NY), but I might check it out to see what Danson is like. How are they going to explain Fishburne's departure?

I wouldn't mind seeing a new CSI franchise, but with a number of different types of characters. Generally, everyone gets along (although there was a bit of friction between Delko and Wolfe). I would like a more cocky, arrogant but brilliant lead CSI like House or Shark who puts down his team a lot of the time with cutting barbs and quips. I'd like a female lead who doesn't get on with him at all (maybe she was passed up for promotion in favour of him when she was meant to head up the team), and maybe a lot of the forensic crew hate him as well but grudgingly learn to respect him. I also wouldn't mind one of the team being a slight psychopath who would eventually turn into a villain and would be able to elude capture using his CSI skills because he knows how to mask his DNA and any evidence etc.

Where else could be a good location for a new franchise? Chicago perhaps? Los Angeles?

Fishburne's departure is easy enough to write off if you've seen the finale. Danson is odd. Not the kind of person I'd have expected to see filling in the gap but maybe he can do it or this is going to be a bad, bad choice that hurts the series. It's already suffering from the loss of Grissom.

Tonight is Helgenberger's last episode.

well, good'riddens. I am extremely happy she is gone.

This show started out really good. But it had character issues which really bothered me. The Grissom/Sarah relationship was like pulling teeth. Jorja Fox was super annoying, 'til she took her break. Now she is far less annoying.
Lawrence Fishburn was all wrong for this show, and I found him just not fitting in.
Marg Helgenberger has been the most annoying character of them all, from the very first episode. I'm so glad she is gone.

all that being said, I really like the current cast going forward. Ted Dansen is great in the role, and all the other supporting characters are good too. I'm excited to see where the show can go, now that it has be relieved of it's most annoying characters.

I thought I read that Grissom was supposed to come back for this episode.

Anybody watch this show that premiered this week?

It's the latest spin off of the mammoth CSI franchise set around the FBI's cyber crimes division.

The main stars you'd recognise are Patricia Arquette, James Van Der Beek and Peter MacNichol.

It was okay as an opening episode, but nothing really special. I found all the little pixelated images and other computer graphics used to denote some digital thing going on to be quite distracting though. I think they need to fix their editing, because that part of it is not fun to watch and slightly headache inducing. It's as if there is too much noise.

If they tone that down, it would be better. I think the characters will take a while to find their stride though. The previous two CSI spin offs, CSI: Miami and CSI: New York, took a while to get going, particularly the latter.

Also, this doesn't actually really seem like CSI. They're the FBI, and it's just the CSI name slapped over it, because they're not really Crime Scene Investigators in the same sense, and don't even refer to themselves as CSI. This could easily have just been its own show, but seems to be trading off the CSI brand name to give it leverage.

I was somewhat disappointed by it. I don't mind the stars but the story and the at times hysterical way they were (mis)using techonology and making leaps of fancy were off-putting.

I know it's CSI and that it is never, ever remotely like reality but having a moderate amount of knowledge on the way technology works really pulls you out of their fantasy world when you see how contrived it's abused.

Just like the other CSI's it will take a little time for them to get their act together. Hopefully sooner rather than later.

Watching... that's a stretch. Struggling is a better word, for the the third and for me, final episode of this wretchedly poor CSI spinoff.

CSI has never been about accuracy or realistic procedure or techniques but that was fine. It used it's own spin on the procedural show to be interesting though it has waned in recent years.

CSI: Cyber on the otherhand is just so godawfully contrived and ridiculous I almost feel anger and annoyance at how badly they do everything. The team is not cohesive or interesting despite some individuals in it being interesting. Put them together and I could care less what happens.

None of the actors are IMO bad but they all feel miscast.

I predict this will end before the season finishes airing.

I haven't seen this week's one yet, but that's disappointing you've given up. I thought last week's one was slightly better than the pilot. I didn't take immediately to CSI: NY for the first season, but I thought it improved from the 2nd season onwards.

I do agree that it does feel rather contrived though, and the editing can be quite irritating, although last week's one was less noticeable.

The thing is that they're not even really CSIs at all. I don't know if someone conceived of a series about cyber crime and tried to fit it under the CSI banner, or that they actually came up with a new CSI concept but decided not to make it about the CSIs themselves but the FBI instead.

I actually found the CSI: Crime Scene Investigation episode where Patricia Arquette guest starred somewhat more interesting than what I've seen here so far. I'll see how it goes though before giving up on it.

I think it was something they rebranded as a CSI spin off and forced a backdoor pilot into it in the last season of CSI.

Other than some common gimmicks that are now a staple of CSI it bears little in resembalance to any of the previous three series.

I like it I am glad they kept tradition and used a Who song for the opening, I have to say I love the choice they used for CSI:Cyber.

The opening song is great and fits with their theme but the series itself has a long ways to go before I'll think of it as a true CSI series.

Before CSI: NY actually aired, I was trying to guess which Who song might be used. The ones I speculated were "I can see for Miles" and "The Seeker". Didn't think it would be Baba O'Reilly.

They should use one of the 60s Who songs like "I'm a boy" :p

I'm somewhat relieved to see some relatively negative reactions to the show. I couldn't even get past the title (which is freaking horrible IMO).

This weeks was the poorest of the eps so far, the killers motive was stupidly skewed and the guy playing him wasn't remorely believeable, shame as the concept fit the shows hook really well.

The biggest issue though is that so far none of the characters have really struck a chord, plus it lacks the slick cohesion to sell the far fetched nature of their skill set the way the original CSI does.

I wonder how long it will be before they introduce the case that brought Avery to her current job, that will surely be the seasons overarching plot.

is any one watching csi cyber? it about this girl named Avery Ryan played by Patricia Arquette were her e-mails and website was hacked then some one killed some one she knew its mostly about different criminals on the internet it come on Wednesday at 10:00 pm on cbs if your fan of CSI: Miami or CSI: ny i highly recommend csi cyber

I don't think this is gonna make it down the road... I have a feeling this'll wind up cancelled eventually...

I don't watch any of the CSI or NCIS shows (or most of CBS' other procedurals), but I see the same promos ON On Demand over and over, and I love saying all the lines along with it whenever they play. For CSI Cyber, Patricia Arquette says all her lines exactly the same way, and then at the end of the promo, she exclaims in heR even, deadpan voice "Our move!"

I can't get enough of it!

If you like her lines, then you should love David Caruso's lines.

Against my better judgement I watched the most recent one and... :argh:

They are so hamfisted with everything, even the nontechnical aspects (you don't have to be a hacker or technically adept to see how much of what they claimed was either outright impossible or impractical to occur). They completely misuse the internet, internet culture, "visual cues" which are not even a valid way to tell if someone is being honest (really, someone brushes aside some hair and it's a lie-detector?) and all around spew an elephant's worth of **** contrived story to make these crimes possible.

This probably might be the first CSI thread Ive seen on here.

I tried watching it but no. It feels more like a show near the end rather than a show that has just begun.
