Comedy The Daily Show Thread

Cool. I like Trevor Noah a lot.

The BBC's Russell Howard's Good News and Charlie Brooker's Newswipe are good satirical comedy shows as well.

Stewart isn't even the original host of the The Daily Show. The idea of dropping The Daily Show name because someone as iconic as Jon Stewart is leaving would be like dropping The Tonight Show after Steve Allen or Jack Paar left. We would have never had the Carson or Leno eras.

Fixed.

Now that all the social justice keyboard-warriors hate him, I'm totally pro-Trevor Noah!

He's off to a rocky start, and he hasn't even hosted yet.

Well, Stewart has basically become a tv legend in the time he's been behind the desk. The next guy was never gonna be welcomed with open arms. He's gotta earn it.

He wasn't even trying with those tweets, he just insults people in them, like 12 year olds who are calling each other f-word "we're so funny hahah".

Who cares what he tweeted five years ago? Get a grip.

I hope Noah pisses off tons of people. Like loads and loads of easily offended tumblr folks. I hate how PC comedy is getting.

Comedy Central Responds to Trevor Noah Twitter Backlash

Soon after Comedy Central confirmed that Trevor Noah would replace Jon Stewart as the host of “The Daily Show,” the network encountered a social media backlash when old tweets from the 31-year-old comedian were brought to light that made him seem antisemitic and sexist .

Comedy Central has since asked that fans of the liberal “news” show judge the new host for more than what he says in 140 characters.

“Like many comedians, Trevor Noah pushes boundaries; he is provocative and spares no one, himself included,” the Viacom-owned network said in a statement. “To judge him or his comedy based on a handful of jokes is unfair. Trevor is a talented comedian with a bright future at Comedy Central.”

Examples of Noah’s Tweets include one from 2011 where he wrote “A hot white woman with ass is like a unicorn. Even if you do see one, you’ll probably never get to ride it” and one from 2014 that said “Behind every successful Rap Billionaire is a double as a rich Jewish man #BeatsbyDreidel.”

News of Noah’s gig came the same day that Comedy Central aired its roast of Justin Bieber — which the network edited before airing to remove jokes about the death of “Fast and Furious” star Paul Walker after they were deemed insensitive.

I don't know what you mean. He's won me over. Now as long as he doesn't issue one of those phony, pandering apologies...
Oh come on, haven't you seen the dozens of articles about him today? It doesn't matter if you like him, I'm talking about the GA. I don't even have a problem with him, I'm just saying.

Pretty good response from Comedy Central.

Yeah, I was getting worried that Ari's show would be canceled from one his jokes coming under fire, but I think he'll be fine, too. CC has been great the past 5-7 years.

Charlie Brooker wipes the floor with everyone else. He's a whole other level of brilliant.

I remember his first appearance. Seems likeable enough. It will be interesting to see how well he does. Though, sort of handing it over to him in the prime time for the Daily Show, election year.

Though, the senior correspondents do need to give him some crap on his first episode.

While Trevor's tweets are obviously inappropriate, I do think that 'Slate' piece represents what's wrong with the internet. The Drew McWeeney coined the term 'the Outrage Machine' and it's fitting here. The discourse of the whatever conversation people are having about him goes out of control where the point is lost, and things gets a little unfair. That's why I don't like this new 'thnkpiece' by Slate Magazine http://reductress.com/post/the-daily-show-host-should-be-a-woman-who-isnt-soaking-my-panties/ is just overly damning towards the guy. It's one thing to call him out, but to outright dismiss him?

And it makes me think, image if twitter was around in the 90's, then Jon Stewart would've been caught saying some dumb things too.

Quality of the tweets = terrible

Actual offensiveness of the tweets = get over yourselves, PC Police

I admit one of those tweets had me :funny:.

Whoever took the time to dig up these old irrelevant tweets needs to grow up and get a life.

Noah's response...

To reduce my views to a handful of jokes that didn’t land is not a true reflection of my character, nor my evolution as a comedian.

Did you mean this article?

I just find it funny that people are taking umbrage over a guy who's taking over a fake news show.

His mom's half Jewish...

Your influences have been broad — your dad is a white European, your mum a black South African. Does that help a broad view?

Oh, definitely. My mum doesn’t fit into any category, she’s a black South African woman who’s half Jewish. I’ve never known myself or my world to be contained within one specific set of parameters, so I’ve gone with the flow. And if I like something I just like it. So I watch Star Wars, I listen to hip hop, and I really like classical music and yet at the same time, I also enjoy really cheesy kung-fu movies. I just like what I like.
