Stravinsky, Rock & Roll and Batman: An Hour with Composer Danny Elfman

Composer Danny Elfman has created one of the most distinctive bodies in film music, providing fantastical musical scores to accompany superheroes, monsters and freaks.

Tune in Monday at 9 pm for an hour-long special on Elfman, once a successful rock musician who jumped into film composition, and became known for his collaborations with film director Tim Burton.

In this conversation with Elliott Forrest, Elfman talks about how he grew up almost unaware of classical music and had no formal musical training. He speaks about his 20-year stint as the lead singer and songwriter for the rock band Oingo Boingo – and his subsequent hearing damage.

Elfman later transitioned to the very different career realm he now occupies. His compositions have appeared in a number of films such as "Peewee’s Big Adventure," "Edward Scissorhands," "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory" and the Batman franchise. He may be most known for his work writing (and singing) the music of Burton’s animated film "The Nightmare before Christmas."

Elfman also talks about:

The story of his nerve-racking experience performing in his new show "Danny Elfman and Music from the films of Tim Burton" and how he learned to overcome stage fright.

How The Rite of Spring introduced him to classical music at age 17.

His surprisingly poor music-reading skills.

After two sold-out runs in Los Angeles and London, Elfman and his orchestra will arrive at Lincoln Center, with a run of performances from July 6 through 12.

Condensed (32 min.) version of interview at top of page. Full (42 min.) interview near bottom of page.

Love how during the interview Elfman expressed his admiration for how the late Jerry Goldsmith and Elmer Bernstein were able to reinvent themselves as the film music industry evolved.

It isn't an expanded re-issue. Though I was hoping it would be in hopes that it would get pressed cd copies in the not too distant future. Oh well maybe next time.

Just got back from the performance at Lincoln Center. Just a spectacular evening. The tickets were a pricey but worth every penny. "Finale" sounded so immense...goosebumps central. Elfman singing for the Nightmare stuff was great, he's really quite the performer. Overall a pretty magical experience, and the audience was super enthusiastic.

I've now seen John Williams and Danny Elfman concerts live...just need Zimmer to bring his show over to the US and I will truly feel complete.

Glad you enjoyed yourself and the concert.

Fingers crossed that an album of the whole concert is in the works.

That would be nice. I spotted a few video cameras rolling, but I suppose that could also be for Lincoln Center archival purposes or w/e. A DVD/Blu ray would be great though, if only for Danny's very fun and physical performance.

That's awesome. And this must be where Elfman, the singers/cast of TNBC, an orchestra and choir will perform all TNBC songs/entire score live.

The track list for ‘The End of the Tour’, which is a song/score combo album, is now available. Minus the samples.

Yay! I figured we'd get a song album and like two Elfman tracks at best.

Listened to the Burton/Elfman box edition of Charlie & the Chocolate Factory in honor of the movie’s release date, which was ten years ago today. Still a very wild score that’s whole lot of fun to listen to.

I must give that a listen for the anniversary. I just have his Big Fish score on repeat. :hrt:

ANNOUNCING: NIGHTMARE BEFORE CHRISTMAS IN CONCERT-LIVE TO PICTURE.

On August 7 Danny Elfman and an amazing cast of singers are joining conductor John Mauceri and a full orchestra and choir in Tokyo to perform NIGHTMARE live against picture.

Producers are Richard Kraft, Laura Engel, Alison Ahart Williams and Tim Fox.

The cast of singers are Danny Elfman, Baraka May Williams, Angie Jaree, Fletcher Sheridan and Randy Crenshaw.

There will be four performances. Future locations/dates to be announced.

There is also an orchestra-only live-to-picture version of the concert (without live singers) that is starting to be booked. Here are details on those shows: http://www.cami.com/?webid=2437
http://www.filmscoremonthly.com/board/posts.cfm?threadID=110942&forumID=1&archive=0

A pity Catherine O'Hara (Sally / Shock), Paul Reubens (Lock), Ken Page (Oogie Boogie), Edward Ivory (Santa) aren't listed being apart of the concert.

Just listened to the Batman Returns score, damn is it beautifully eery. Elfman's style fit so perfectly for those Burton films. I love it, I tend to play the Batman Returns score during Halloween every year too. Wouldn't it be cool to have him come back for the Affleck bat films? A universe with Leto's Joker and a dead Robin, you almost need the Elfman style in there. I can dream I suppose.

PBS is making this Halloween one to remember.

The network announced Danny Elfman's Music from the Films of Tim Burton (working title) at the Television Critics Association press tour Saturday.

Airing on Oct. 30, the Live From Lincoln Center special will feature Elfman's iconic scores from Batman, Beetlejuice, Edward Scissorhands and The Nightmare Before Christmas, the last of which features Elfman singing his own songs. The music will be accompanied by film clips as well as original sketches and storyboards created by Burton.

The symphony orchestra will be led by renowned conductor John Mauceri.

Elfman and Mauceri have previously collaborated on this concert in Los Angeles and London the past several years, frequently timed to Halloween. The duo performed a series of concerts at Lincoln Center last month.

The special joins previously announced Lincoln Center programs for Kern & Hammerstein's Show Boat and Act One, from writer George S. Kaufman (You Can't Take It With You).

Danny Elfman's Music From the Films of Tim Burton will air Oct. 30 at 9 p.m.

Weird Science turned 30 years old Sunday.

Even though I’ve heard that song many times I have yet to see the movie.

WHAT ??

go out and see it man, go!

Listened to the score that was the birth of many prolific Burton/Elfman collaborations. “Pee Wee’s Big Adventure“ (Burton/Elfman box edition). The movie was released 30 years ago today. Which reminds me I still need to purchase the LLLR expanded sequel score “Big Top Pee Wee”.
