Danny Elfman: "Jack Skellington Is a Fun Guy To Be" (Q&A)

The Hollywood Reporter said:
The celebrated composer dicusses returning to Halloween Town for a live performance of 'The Nightmare Before Christmas’ at the Hollywood Bowl on Oct. 31.

It’s been over two decades since composer Danny Elfman last served up one of the raucous annual Halloween concerts with Oingo Boingo, the eclectic rock band that Elfman fronted for years before he turned his talents to movie music. Elfman has no plans to reunite the band, but fans can still see him in concert in a performance of the entire score and songs to the Tim Burton-produced, Henry Selick-directed 1994 stop motion fantasy The Nightmare Before Christmas — which will be synchronized to the film — at the Hollywood Bowl on Oct. 31. The composer says he was skeptical at first, but was relieved when tickets for the Halloween performance sold out the day they were put on sale. A second show was quickly added for the following night. Elfman, who will sing in character as “Pumpkin King” Jack Skellington, talked to The Hollywood Reporter about why he decided to return to Halloween Town 22 years later.

You’ve been performing some of the songs from Nightmare in the series of Tim Burton/Danny Elfman concerts you’ve toured with over the past couple of years, but how did The Nightmare Before Christmas at the Bowl come into being?

As with everything else, it was random and not really thought out. I was sitting with the promoter of the Burton/Elfman concert a year ago in Tokyo having dinner. I was thinking "man, that was fun playing in Tokyo." I really loved it, and I knew we couldn’t take the Elfman/Burton show back there every year so I thought I had to come up with something else. So without really thinking about it I just blurted out, "How about Nightmare Before Christmas Live?" I thought I could do it with a small crew of live singers and cover all the voices like we did the original. About six months later I got a call from [Elfman’s agent] Richard Kraft saying, “We got it — Tokyo, we got it!” I said, "Got what?" He replied, “The Nightmare show.” I said, “What did I say?” He said, “You said you could do it with you and four singers.” It seemed like a fun idea, but then logistically working out how we actually do this, it was a lot more complicated than I was imagining.

What did you learn from the first performance in Tokyo?

[Conductor — and former Hollywood Bowl principal conductor and director] John Mauceri reminded me, there are no breaks in the music — there might be 35 cues but there’s maybe only three breaks. He said, “There’s no places to turn pages and bring up a new cue on the stand. This is really impossible — if we blow a song we’re screwed.” But we did two shows there and he found that it was in fact doable, but very tricky. John pointed out something which I didn’t know: he said, “I think this is the first time anyone’s done this. Tried to do a live, 10-song musical with orchestra in between, all in synch to film with no breaks.”

How is this different for you as a performer from the Elfman/Burton concert?

It’s very disciplined — when I’m doing Elfman/Burton and I sing Jack’s songs, I only sing one in sync with the picture: “What’s This?” The rest, the orchestra follows me. I could start any tempo I want and John will follow and I don’t have to think about it. Here I’m really paying attention and counting my bars — it’s like I can’t miss a beat. It takes a lot of concentration, but having done it twice, I’m feeling much more confident. The opening night in Tokyo, we really didn’t know if we were going to pull it off and it seemed like it might just have been a crazy idea I came up with over too much sake. But I enjoyed the fact that I was doing Jack Skellington and not Oingo Boingo — I wasn’t bringing back something I used to do or having a reunion and doing songs I’d already grown tired of many years ago.

Does this satisfy your itch as a live performer or could you see yourself doing other things?

I actually don’t have any itch to be a live performer; that’s the funny thing. I remember for a decade just enjoying the fact that it’s Halloween and I can go trick-or-treating with my kids. There wasn’t the anxiety of oh, it’s the Halloween show and I have to relearn 23 songs and get my voice back in shape. I’m enjoying bringing Jack Skellington to people. I’m presenting this one specific character that I created for one specific project. Jack is a fun guy to be and I think I’m doing few enough of the shows that it’s working out well — I’m not going on tour for six weeks doing Jack. My one concern about going to the Bowl was the number of seats — I thought there was no way we were going to sell out the Bowl. So the fact that it sold out the first day they put tickets up for sale was ridiculous. I kept saying, "There’s something fishy here." I was kind of suspicious. I said, "This has got to be a computer mistake — we sold 700 tickets and not 17,000 and this is going to go down as a huge fiasco." But they kept reassuring me and we had to add another show. It’s the interactivity at the Bowl that makes it unique, and I guess that’s why it did so well.

Waxwork Records is excited to announce that we are releasing the Original Motion Picture Soundtrack to GOOSEBUMPS! Composed by the legendary Danny Elfman, this release will be available for pre-order this Friday, October 30th!

The 180 Gram Double LP has been approved by none other than author, R.L. Stine, and features all new artwork by GOOSEBUMPS artist, Tim Jacobus! We here at Waxwork couldn't think of anyone better than Tim to create the full package artwork for this release. Tim's artwork is synonymous with the GOOSEBUMPS legacy, as he has illustrated all 62 original books!

The Waxwork Records crew grew up reading R.L. Stine's GOOSEBUMPS books feverishly, and we, like so many millions of GOOSEBUMPS fans across the world, became obsessed with the horrific, yet bright, colorful, and welcoming artwork by Tim Jacobus that graced each book cover. Having Tim Jacobus come on board and agree to create all new and original GOOSEBUMPS art for our vinyl soundtrack is a dream come true.

Tim has kept every transparency of his GOOSEBUMPS artwork in an archive over the years, and keeping true to the spirit of those creepy books, every color used to create our new vinyl LP artwork and layout are the same colors that he used to illustrate the original book covers!

With the approval of SCHOLASTIC and R.L. Stine himself, we were allowed to faithfully design our new GOOSEBUMPS vinyl soundtrack to meet every detail of the original books from the 1990's!

GOOSEBUMPS goes up for pre-order this Friday, October 30th, and is expected to ship within 8 weeks. If you haven't checked out the movie, yet, get to the theater, now!

Danny Elfman Sings "What's This?"
[YT]X8kxB3jXwSo[/YT]

It airs tonight on PBS @ 9:00 pm.

I enjoyed the concert, but was disappointed that the PBS program omitted Planet Of The Apes (one of my favorite Elfman scores from the last decade), Corpse Bride, and Dark Shadows. They used the Charlie & The Chocolate Factory main titles cue as an intro/overture to the concert featuring footage from various Burton films. Instead of just inter-cutting it with footage from C&TCF, which was odd. Even though Ingrid Michaelson did fine performing “Sally’s Song”, I wish the voice of Sally (Catherine O’Hara) would’ve performed it instead. But overall excellent concert. Elfman was incredible on stage singing and performing a few “Nightmare” songs.

I forgot to mention that the short interviews (in between suites) with some of the fans, who attended the concert, was nice. Got to see how much impact Burton’s films/Elfman’s scores had on them and why.

See Danny Elfman perform Oingo Boingo's 'Dead Man's Party' after 20 years

Entertainment Weekly said:
It’s been 20 years since Danny Elfman performed the Oingo Boingo song “Dead Man’s Party,” but the composer-musician broke that dry spell on Saturday. Elfman finished a Halloween concert at the Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles with a rendition of the 1985 hit.

“Ladies and gentlemen, I’m gonna do something I said I’d never do,” he told the crowd. “Now, if I don’t do it very well, forgive me. It’s been exactly 20 years to the day. Halloween, October 31, 1995 when I played this song last.” Elfman was the lead singer of the rock band until the members retired that year.

Rock Cellar Magazine found video of the performance shot by a fan in the audience. Watch it below.

 Not bad. Wonder if there is a chance of an Oingo Boingo reunion now?

I listened to Elfman's tender Edward Scissorhands score (Elfman/Burton Box Edition) in honor of the film's release date 25 years ago from today. It actually came out nationwide Dec. 14 but had a limited release Dec. 7th.

Emotionally rich, grand Danny Elfman soundtrack for famed 1990 Tim Burton fantasy romance with dark overtones finally gets expanded treatment! Johnny Depp plays Edward in nervous, moving fashion, Vincent Price wraps his own legendary career as The Inventor, Winona Ryder plays beautiful romantic lead Kim Boggs, Kathy Baker enacts comic neighbor Joyce. Tale is by turns spellbinding and eccentric, haunting and romantic. Danny Elfman tackles multiple musical challenges by covering every base: ideas are tuneful, melodic, quirky, exciting, inventive, powerful, grand, intimate - and ultimately haunting. Main theme alternates between major harmonies, minor ones as upwards-leaning melody unfolds in gently yearning fashion. With gentle arpeggio figures, transparent orchestrations, boys choir in the mix, this theme remains one of Elfman's most heartfelt and endearing. Even in its most passioned, sweeping orchestral/choral perorations, this theme remains tender and romantic, colored with a tinge of tragedy. Beautiful writing! Numerous thematic ideas cover all those other bases, from comic hair-cut scenes to dramatic chase scenes, from wistful nostalgic overtones to crescendoing scares. Yet no matter how far out Burton and Elfman take things, incredibly haunting love story kindles all other elements throughout. Expanded edition available courtesy UMG & 20th Century Fox. Production by Nick Redman, audio restoration, assembly by Mike Matessino & Neil Bulk, detailed notes by Jeff Bond, package design by Joe Sikoryak. Absolutely winning score! Danny Elfman composes, Shirley Walker conducts orchestra, adult choir, Paulist Choristers Of California. CD available as part of Intrada INT series!

Looks like I'll be triple dipping this one but I'll have to wait next year to purchase it. Glad they included the trailer music in the bonus tracks. I'm assuming the logo music is merged with "Introduction (Titles)"

Well the murmurs were true... David O. Russell's 'Joy' will not feature any Elfman music.

The album features the songs from the film... Also included are several tracks from the movie’s original score composed by West Dylan Thordson & David Campbell, with additional music by Blake Mills.

Honestly I'm not hurt by this news. Since O. Russell never took advantage of Elfman's music in his two prior films anyway. And funny how the 'Joy' soundtrack was able to include the songs and some score tracks on the same album unlike 'Silver Linings Playbook' which had a soundtrack album (featuring mostly songs and two Elfman tracks) and a digital only album featuring the Elfman score. There's only been a song album (with one brief Elfman cue) for American Hustle. Oh well...

Well since it's Christmas week earlier today I listened to some scores to movies centered around the holiday such as Elfman's "Scrooged" and "Edward Scissorhands" (Elfman/Burton Box Edition).

‘Batman’ Live to Projection Concerts Announced

This afternoon I got around to listening to Intrada’s expanded reissue of Elfman’s iconic masterpiece “Edward Scissorhands”. I thought the sound quality was excellent. As a big fan of this score I was happy to hear tracks (that were edited on the original soundtrack) in full on this release. Particularly “Beautiful New World”, “The Heist”, and “Final Confrontation”. As well as hearing certain tracks separated, which were edited into a suite on the original soundtrack.

The nitpicks I have with it are that some short cues aren’t in chronological order as the way it was in the film (such as “Housewives/Esmeralda 2/ Paper Dolls”, “The Tide Changes/ Kim Spies/Edward’s Rage” and “Paranoia/Final Cut/Devil Bush”) and are combined with other short cues. It’s going to be a pain trying to separate and import ‘em in chronological order onto my iPod.

I noticed that the Elfman/Burton Box version of this score had the alternate versions of “Kim At The Mall” and “Paranoid” instead of the film versions, while the Intrada edition has both versions of each cue.

Also the Elfman/Burton box version of “Housewives” is missing the piece that plays where Edward cuts the string from the shirt that Peg gave him to wear. “Talk Show” from the Intrada release included the commercial break music after Edward accidentally fell in his chair when cutting his microphone during an interview on live television, which the Elfman/Burton Box version of the cue didn’t include. The Intrada release also has the entire cue of “Confrontation” which the Elfman/ Burton Box Edition only included the piece where Jim threw Edward out for accidentally "skewering" Kim but omitted the music where Kim’s father asked Edward where he was going after Jim forced him to leave and when Kim broke up with Jim.

Also the liner notes wasn’t as in depth with the score as I would had hoped. Which is very unfortunate since Jeff Bond, who was the author of the “Danse Macabre” book in the Elfman/Burton Box, wrote the liner notes for this Intrada release. But overall it was worth the triple dip and I’m grateful for this pretty much complete reissue of this magnificent score. I’m also grateful that they finally released the music from this trailer.

[YT]M94yyfWy-KI[/YT]

It was always a piece I wanted to hear outside of the trailer. This release is highly recommended to fans of the film/score and film music fans in general.
