Which one of these underrated CBMs is better?

I say Rises but both are good.

Surprised to see this hasn’t been done before.

it's not funny anymore.

TDKR.

I think the better comparison is ASM and MOS.

Both attempted to be darker more grounded reboots of previous iterations .

Both were polarizing with their respective fanbases though MOS led to more divisive discourse with Superman fans than ASM did with Spiderman fans.

Both ditched the secret identity troupe with their respective love interests in the first film

Both led to a sequels meant to launch spin offs which were micro-managed by their respective studios.

Regardless of which one fans may feel is the better film, I think the better comparison and case study is ASM vs MOS.

My thoughts exactly. The Amazing Spider-Man and Man of Steel is a far better match-up and for the record I'd vote for the former. Despite hating the sequel I personally enjoyed the first one.

But with these two, there is no competition.

Clearly TDKR.

I agree that MoS vs. TASM1 makes a better matchup in terms of overall response, but for me personally I still greatly prefer MoS. But I'm much harder on TASM1 than a lot of people. I really disliked the portrayal of Peter Parker. Basically I found him to be a selfish, obnoxious ass. I may not love Cavill's Superman either (he's bland and wooden), but I didn't loathe him the same way I do Garfield's Parker.

I pretty much feel the same way you do.

I was surprised by how unlikable Garfield's Peter ended up being. I know they wanted the opposite of Maguire, which I get , but he really didn't come off as well as a character Sony seemed to think he did.

After I saw The Social Network, I thought Garfield would be a great Peter, and I guess I expected his Peter would be more like his character in The Social Network.

I think they wanted to go for a moody ,restless, outsider, type character teen that's typical in CW teen dramas. But that's not Peter Parker.

There were times they tried to show a nerdy goofy side to Peter, so I'll give them some credit for that, but his Peter didn't work for me.

Cavill's Clark was just stolid and stiff, though fans found his actions to be controversial.

Dark Knight Rises only because Anne Hathaway was fierce in the movie.

They botched uncle Ben’s story; introduced a stupid parents subplot that goes nowhere; the villain couldn’t be dumber if you tried; Peter Parker is an unlikeable ahole who breaks a promise he made to someone in two seconds.

Results like this are why I say the hatred towards TDKR is just a small, vocal minority and it isn't truly divisive in the way something like Man of Steel or The Last Jedi is. While this poll means nothing on its own, almost every audience and critic indicator points to the exact same conclusion.

I don't think she is myself. I think Raimi MJ has more going on character wise.

I know a lot of people don't agree with me, but I think a lot of her attitude in SM3 (which is where more of the complaints are from) is understandable. Peter is acting aloof and insensitive towards her. She's dealing with a rough spot in her career which is taking a toll on her emotionally, and Peter isn't being supportive or even paying attention to what she's saying a lot of the time.

TDKR and its not even close. Emma Stone as Gwen Stacy is easily the best thing about both TASM films IMO and is honestly the only thing that actually helped me get through both of those movies. Andrew Garfield is a fantastic actor, but man did I dislike his version of Peter Parker.

His Spider-Man was on point though.

ASM is one of those films — because it’s so listless and generic — whose worth would rise or sink depending on the sequel. If ASM 2 was good, ASM would be looked on as better. If ASM 2 was bad, it would look worse.

the latter happened.

It's nice to see others who see it this way. I keep defending MJ in Spider-Man 3 for this.

I think it's more interesting to compare films like Star Trek 2009, Casino Royale, TASM, Batman Begins, and MOS, together since they were all reboots of long established franchises around the same time and made in similar contexts.

Comparing starters in franchises together like Superman 1978 vs Iron Man vs Batman 89 vs Spiderman 2002 etc, is also more interesting to me since they're all the beginning of film franchises.

Comparing random films together like ASM 2 vs TDK or Punisher 2004 vs The Joker, as an example, really isn't all interesting when its lopsided.

I find the discussions interesting when:

1. The films have quite a bit in common so it makes sense comparing them.
2. The outcome is in doubt.

For example, the one I made was a comparison posters were already discussing in another thread so I think it made sense to have its own. But ones like this that are obvious one-sided blowouts are pretty much a waste of time.

I think this competition actually is more comparable and appropriate in that both were trying to pay tribute to, or alternately cashing in on, The Dark Knight ... Although (or also) I don't think either is underrated.

The Dark Knight Rises by a wide margin, TASM failed much, much more as a film in itself, adaptation of the comics and follow-up to previous films including The Dark Knight. Definitely much more bland even though TDKR was almost as bland as you can do a film including Bane.
