Which group of Mesozoic dinosaurians does everybody prefer?

Ornithischia - "bird-hipped" - beaked, herbivorous

Saurischia - "lizard-hipped"

This second clade includes both of the groups known as sauropods (long-necked, herbivorous) and therapods (bipedal - mainly carnivorous)


I really like Saurischia for Therapoda, but I also like Ornithiscia in general, so it's hard for me to say. I'll just go for Therapoda for now

So, what does everyone think about the various ideas on the eating habits of Tyrannosaurus rex? Was it a hunter, a scavenger, a bit of both?

Both. It wouldn't need such powerful legs and a streamlined body if it wasn't hunting, since it's not like being able to run away from a bigger predator would be a concern for it. I think the reason for it having such small arms was because it balanced out the tail, and allowed the T-Rex to run with its spine in an almost straight horizontal line, which would have allowed for the minimal amount of wind resistance. That thing is built for two things: running, and eating, and given how it was probably the largest carnivor of it's time I'm guessing it was in that order. However, if it came across a dinosaur that was already dead, I'm guessing it wouldn't have passed up the opportunity for a free meal.

BTW, most of my favorite Dinos are of the lizard-hipped variety, although I am also partial to the Triceratops family.

What do you guys think about the idea that the Parasaurolophus's crest may have housed a biological flamethrower? I think that would push it up from a 2 to a 10 on the bad ass scale.

It's hard to believe these bad-ass reptilian giants once where all over the place. It's like God was a 6 year old kid that wiped out the dinosuars to start a new project when he hit puberty.

but I doubt any dinosaur breathed fire. A chemical acid is more likely as some insects do.

I lliked Spinosaurus, but when I heard the name I went ''Who''? Give me T-Rex damn it, that roar, that thumping sound is so iconic

I went to that show!!!!! I was 23 when I went, but damn if I didn't revert into a giggling 4 year old while there. If you have ANY interest in dinosaurs, I HIGHLY suggest going.

If anyone is interested, I can post pics I took while there.

As far as the T.Rex debate goes; I would agree with those who have said "both". When looking at the makeup of the Rex, you'll see he has incredible sense of smell, which can be seen as helpful for both hunting and scavenging; as well as as incredible binocular vision - which is a trait of active hunters. The Rex's size would allow him to both overcome smaller prey and scare off other predators. Analyzing his brain case shows that a Rex's brain was highly developed for strategy and problem solving, which would be extremely advantageous for taking down a living animal. Though despite what JP would have you believe, T-Rex could not keep pace with a jeep, so if the T Rex were to hunt, he'd must likely be an ambush predator, attacking large and slow moving animals.

Yeah, Alex, the expanding frill around its neck and the capability to spit poison was an invention for the movie; there is no scientific proof to suggest the Dilophosaur could do so (though it was a cool scene!)

This thread is awesome! I absolutely love dinosaurs, they have fascinated my mind since I was a kid. Of course Jurassic Park was the trigger to this Dino-Mania. I specially dig the comment about the Parasaurolophus being able to breath fire, how about dragons to spice the conversation? Are animals like dinosaurs really capable of this feat?

When I was a kid I had a book called Ranger Rick's Dinosaur Book or something like that. I absolutely loved it, at first for the the illustrations, but as I got older I appreciated the text as well.

I've been fascinated by dinosaurs for as long as I can remember. I had three particular video tapes about dinosaurs that I used to watch over and over as a kid in the 80s. Over the years, they eventually fell apart. I recently (while on a major nostalgia kick), found two of them on youtube:

I can't find the other, though. Its about two dinosaur experts. One of them is slowly turning into a dinosaur, so the other is on a race to try and find a cure, and while he's searching, they tell you all about dinosaurs and the history of paleontology.

I know I watched (and loved) that second video as a kid, and the first seems vaguely familiar. What is it about kids that they all love dinosaurs?

I was obsessed with dinosaurs all through childhood. Not nearly as much now, but still when I see a picture or anything I feel like "damn, I would love to just see one".

Can you imagine seeing a Tyrannosaurus or a Brachiosaurus? Holy crap!

Lions and bears and elephants are pathetic in comparison.
