Make no mistakes its classic but I really love seeing something different. Anyone else with me on this? Respect them for what they were (like the Burton batman movies) and just set out and do a superman movie with a whole updated look on everything. The suit, krypton, smallvile, FOS etc keeping in mind the core story and characters.

And it can be done; we can have a restart that won’t look like old wine in new bottle. Look at the animated series as a great example. I put the animated series above the donner movies as well. That is superman for me. I really hope someday we get someone like who pulls of a 'Nolan' on Superman.

Now that Singer's done the little homages and such, I think he'll make the second one a lot more unique and in his own style. SR offered a bit of closure on the Donner universe. It's time to move on now.

I really doubt it, some how I feel he’s just going to continue with that borrowed “Donner” vision. Pisses me off we’ll never get to see Lexcorp on Screen instead we get to see superman: daddy’s day out

Just out of curiosity could someone post pics of a non donner style FOS

I have to say I enjoyed Superman Returns, but at the same time I also wished to see something new.

I would've loved to see Lex with his own corporation as the biggest and most important man of Metropolis, instead of being a wig wearing crook that swindles a widow out of her money. And then we have again the same plot, though with a different approach. He's still trying to get his own land and in the process he's going to kill billions of people. And he still acts a teensy little bit silly, though luckily not as silly as Hackman. I really wanted him to be a cold hearted businessman.

And am I the only one who thinks the music has to change? Everytime I hear the Superman Theme I think "Been there, heard that, seen that."

I just want them like patrickbateman said, to pull a "Nolan" on the Superman franchise.

i agree to a point. i loved the movie, but it irritated me that they didn't 'evolve' luthor from the donner version to the lexcorp version of today. it would have been easy, too: superman's gone for 5 years, lex buys his way out of prison, swindles an old lady out of her company (instead of just her fortune) and bam! that's it. not much would've had to change.

I love this gif. Well superman's non-donner universe version is pretty much dead, I think.

Thank god for Nolan.

If the next one is also a vague sequel thing maybe parts can be ignored from sr. who knows.

I don't mind that Singer used the Donner films as his insperation, but he could have just as well set it up for himself.

Let me explain. In using the old footage he purposely set himself in the universe, I don't care how "vague" he wanted to be about it. It's now there. Now with the Donner cut of S2 coming out, it will be a total contradiction to what's in SR because as any true fan knows, the Donner cut of S2 is the real version. This version also suppliments that the FOS is practically destroyed. Now this creates a great paradox.

What Singer could have done, was start the movie (SR) out with some of the footage from Donner's original Krypton footage, just at the point where Lara and Jor-El are weighing their options then finally send Kal-El away. After this, Singer could have opened his movie with Superman waking up in his ship to see Krypton as it is now. The other thing he could have done to make it his own was to not have Lex so familiar with the FOS, instead, he could just 'discover' how the thing worked and could have moved on from there.

This, IMO, would have made SR it's own origin and returns movie in one without directly disrespecting the history that has been established and that is to come.

Also, without opening directly from where Superman: The Movie opening up (with the sentence of Zod and company), Singer could logically use those characters in subsequent sequels if he wanted to. This is yet another paradox, should he use Zod when he's been used before in the same universe.

You know, the thing is, I think, had Donner been allowed to helm another movie, he would not have come up with this. I mean, when Superman fans are more excited about a sequel he directed almost 30 years ago than a new movie, that tells you something. I think had Donner helmed it, or even produced it, we would have had a much better film.

Donner loved the idea and supported the film...

Dont get me wrong I liked SR a lot but didnt love it. I watched my Superman dvd again and man was it cheesy but there was something special about it. I cant describe it but its just there.
SR would not even be great without the original essence of the past movies.

Rest in peace Glen Ford, he was awesome as Jonathan Kent.

This is what the fans have been saying and obviously the general audience would like for this legend judgong from the general luke warm response. The Donner universe was great for it's time but new audiences want something fresh not just 'OK'. It amazes me that people are willing to settle for the Donneresque SUperman again. But this version was a pale immitation by comparrison anyway. Chris Reeves is like Bruce Lee, he grabs you from the second hes on the screen. Margot Kidder is a great lois lane. The old films drama worked. I don't know why they tried to replicate it. They tried and failed.
And yes the animated Superman has some great action and design from the fortress to Krypton and all the Supervillains. I'm with all the fans who want a Superman movie with all new designs and some hi octane action as well as a touch of kitchen sink romance. I talk to the guys at work who say "Superman is boring" and pull my hair out saying "No dude! Please don't judge Superman from Superman Returns".
And they LIKED SR too!

He did. But if Donner had done it, as he had aproached the studio several times in the 90's, he had different ideas. And when he and Mankleweitcz were working on 1 & 2, they had ideas for 5 other films. Supporting a film and "that is what he would have done if he had done it" are two different things.

Donner suported the film but Singer is nowhere as good as Donner. STM has magic. SR doesn`t. Its very simple.

Agreed.

Soonr or later, like it or not, there must be change.

The Fleischer cartoons were great.....then we got a cool live action Kirk Alyn Superman......then we got a nice new take with George Reeves.......then Christopher Reeve appeared in the Donner version, fantastic........then Dean Cain does a new take on the Clark/Lois dynamics........and then..........we get the Donner version again.

I was hoping for something new.

Are the Alyn series collection worthy? I read somewhere the series was going to be released on DVD.
