Why do people ***** about Hugh Jackman playing Wolverine due to his height not being in line with his comic counterpart but give a free pass to the Lord of the Rings movies despite them not casting little people in the roles of Hobbits and Dwarves.

LOL I don't think that many people complain about either, don't think it's a huge part of or discrepancy from the look of the character let alone the character overall.

Although if all the visuals are real important to you I can see there would be a different reaction, the Hobbit and dwarf characters were made to look small despite the casting, the visual portrayal was achieved by methods other than the casting.

I’ve seen quite a few people ***** about wolverine being tall in the movies because apparently in the early comics he was short even though he was 5 foot three and 5 feet isn’t really that short.

Tom Cruise would beg to differ about the complaints. At this point Hugh Jackman and the movies trump the comics as the iconic version. And the pre Snow White complaints about their set photos is waiting for the promotion blitz to return in full force

As everyone else has already said, the vast majority of the fan base isn't really complaining. But your comparison also doesn't make sense. Hobbits don't exist in real life and the dwarves of Middle earth aren't the same dwarves in real life. For the film, the actors were made to appear physically smaller.

So even though on screen Wolverine is not in line with his comic book counterpart, on screen the Hobbits are in line with their book counterparts.

If anything I think it says something about how strongly people feel for Hugh Jackman's performance and love for the character that the only "yeah but"s you may hear are about his height.

I was just thinking last night, my goodness could you imagine if Dougray Scott's shoot with MI2 didn't go long and he ended up portraying the character? Hard to say but he feels like someone who wouldn't have been as invested in Wolverine to play him for 20+ years the way Hugh embraced him. Hugh may have been crazy lucky Dougray suddenly became unvailable, but we're even more lucky Hugh is Logan.

Agreed 1,000,000,000%.

Hugh was one in a million casting. Like Chris Reeve. The stars just aligned perfectly. I think it'll be even more apparent how great he was after the role is recast.
The new guy could be a great actor too, but maybe is more comic accurate in height and wears a comic accurate suit from day one. For me the brown and yellow is the iconic suit. Also, now that the precedence is set with DP & Wolvie at Marvel Studios, what if new Wolverine gets more R-Rated content from the start? What if he reflects more accurately comic Wolverine's fighting style with his martial arts knowledge and acrobatics, on top of the brutality that was only recently portrayed after 17 years? My point being as much as Hugh is iconic in the role, there are various elements, through no fault of his own, that he couldn't control.

Same as RDJ. If a new actor came in and got to really explore the demon in a bottle arc, for example, he's touched on an aspect of the character that RDJ wasn't able to in his time. This is ultimately a good thing though because it leaves room for new actors to make their mark by exploring aspects/characteristics of theses heroes that previous actors didn't. With Hugh Jackman it may be a mute point anyway if he's sticking around.

I would say his height was part of his character. There is a great panel from Wolverine's solo comics, with him face to face with Juggernaut. It just makes him more bad**s because he was so short, but pretty much indestructible. So he doesn't have to be some imposing figure. I still prefer a shorter Wolverine. It lends more to his grit. If he himself is imposing and towering over people then it is just another muscle bound tough guy. He "stands" out, pun intended because of his diminished size. He is still musclebound but short. It has to do with the whole don't underestimate your opponent thing. Which plays well with a short guy going up against these super powered mutants.

As for dwarves, they are fantastical beings, so I prefer the fantasy version we saw in The hobbit and lotr. They look stout, where as real little people don't. The proportions of fantasy characters are different than real people. So we have the technology to make them now. You can still cast whoever, but I prefer the fantasy version. Dwarves with thick forearms and legs, and a barrel chest. Again they should look stout and hardy, which I think lotr and the hobbit pulled off. Oh and the nose and beard is important, but that is a given. The hobbit movie did not do this for a couple of dwarves which hurt the aethestic to me. I think Balin and Gloin were probably the quientissential look of a fantasy dwarf. The others might have had something I though was off, but those 2 I remember being ideal.

Jackman is iconic in the roIe and it looks like he may stick around awhile. No complaints from me if that's the case.

That said, in a recast, we need a short, more comic accurate Wolverine. The hairier the better. You know what else is preferable? Ugliness. Wolverine became more handsome in the comics/animation as time went on, but the reaction from women should be at first, repulsion, but secondly an animalistic attraction. That's Wolvie in a nutshell. An absolute animal who takes a beating, dishes it back in kind, and keeps on ticking.

How many 5'7 or below actors do we have playing larger than life superheroes?

Jackman has been Wolverine for 2 decades so it is what it is but to act like people shouldn't be annoyed about not getting "comic accuracy" when its preached left and right, up and down for just about every character...you get Supermans curl out of place and its war....but to take an iconic superhero is supposed to be 5'3 which is EVERYTHING that goes against not only hollywood but also comics....and turn him into the generic 6 ft+ hollywood superhero archetype? Its,,,kind of laughable.

At least with LoTR the actors were made to look short. Jackman was never done to be 5'3.

So no...there is no double standard. People would FREAK if you gave them a Superman who was 5'7 or 5'8 or 5'9....

It's true. To find a 5'3"actor to play Wolverine and who actually fits the character profile is pretty unrealistic. How may actors in history are that height, or close to it? The only ones I can think of who had long careers and actually became stars are, Jimmy Cagney, Edward G. Robinson (two of my all time favorites) and Danny Devito (big fan too). They were all 5'5" and under.

Realistically, you would aim for someone in the 5'9" and under range. This is a reason you see fancasts for Daniel Radcliffe, but its not worth getting a more comic accurate height if the actor is just wrong for the part. Radcliffe has proven himself to be an excellent actor, but he is not an ideal Wolverine.

It isnt so much unrealistic as it is...you wont be finding any well known actors and this where unknowns come in. Short guys like to act to. They just arent given the same opportunities in front of the camera.

someone like Scott Caan might have been their best bet for a height accurate, take..

but, I don't think you have to go as far as that, I think even just someone in the 5'8"-5'9" rang is just fine... anyone under 6' at this point would be more height accurate

My question is how big a pool is there of 5'3 - 5'4" actors to choose from? I'm certain there are many in that height range who dream of being an actor, but how many of these people actually pursue that dream? As you say, the odds are already against them, so why pursue it to begin with?

I wouldn't mind an unknown at all. I would be excited if they found a 5'3" diamond in the rough to play Wolverine.

remember when D.J. Cotrona was almost Superman and he's a pretty short dude...
(even went on to playing one of the heroes in Shazam! as well an I don't think his height really was that noticeable)
