The Earthquake Thread

If they start building giant ships, I'm pushing all you mother****ers out the way. :o

Heard the news early this morning. Really praying the tsunami misses all of its targets hey. Man...

I don't think it will go anywhere near Haiti's death toll. The government of Chile just announced that they will need 72 hours to give a good specific death count, but its not going to be anywhere near Haiti's death toll. Chile has strong earthquake regulations on its buildings. Haiti had none.

Pretty much. Chile's seen tremendous improvement on infrastructure since the end of the Pinochet regime.

Chile has done better in all areas since the end of the Pinochet regime....I hope they can recover from this quickly, they were doing well educationally, etc.....they were becoming a shining star in Latin America.

Update: A spokesperson from the Tsunami Warning Center in Hawaii just stated that Hilo could possibly get waves at 8 feet. AND, they have said that there are people out riding the waves.....IDIOTS.

Crap, just found out I have some family in Hawaii. I'm sure there are safe areas somewhere there, right?

Do they live in a Bay area, or on the coast?....if they do, then hopefully they have evacuated until this passes...

I'm hoping, as I'm sure many are, that things are nowhere near as bad as Haiti, thankfully they have a more structured government and they said in the news that they were prepared for something like this, so hopefully the death tole will be to a minimum, it still royally sucks though!!!:(:(:(

It's always active.....I don't know that it is more active than normal. Haiti is smack in the middle of three plates....NA Plate, Caribbean Plate and SA Plate.

Chile is feeling the impact of the SA Plate and the Nazca Plate...so they are impacted by different plates.

The Ring of Fire just has more earthquakes than any other part of the world, and tends to have the largest.

LOOKS LIKE WE HAVE LESS THAN AN HOUR BEFORE WE SEE THE BEGINNINGS OF THE WAVES TO HIT HAWAII.

Cabo San Lucas is reporting wave increase of about 1.5 ft.

Those of you in San Diego will be seeing an increase soon.

I don't think there's more activity than usual, we're just paying more attention now.

But in seriousness... that's nuts. Does anyone know where the epicenter was?
I believe it was in Maule.

I've heard from my friends in Chile and thankfully they're doing well, not much damage in their homes. They do tell me the newer buildings are meant to survive quakes, so that should help minimize the damage. Also, Chile has a much better infrastructure and resources than Haiti, so i dont expect to see something to that level of destruction and loss of life, even if the quake was much stronger.

I'm hoping no terrible tsunami though, that would just be too much :csad:

It looks to be right between Concepcion and Temuca, and very close to Calama.

And yes all of those are in the region of Maule.

How long now till it hits Hawaii..... and will the waves hit New Zealand & Australia? Got a few friends in both countries

It should hit Hawaii any moment they say. I'm watching it on CNN and they're even showing some morons still by the beach or even in the water even with the water starting to recede. I think they also just said there was one in New Zealand.

In Hilo, the water is already being pulled out to sea from the beaches, so that is the first sign.....

And yes the Chatham Islands are getting waves as well as we type...

Damn man, first Haiti now Chile & Hawaii? I'm glad I don't live on an island, though I'm on the next best thing.

Watching Sky News via their site atm.... They're saying it's gonna hit Hawaii 'Shortly'...

This is not good. I mean I'm not crying and worrying like crazy...but I was born in Hawaii...and possibly seeing a tsunami maybe wipe it out isn't good to see or hear.

Now a tsunami hitting the East Coast would be the worst in history. It would just go FAR inland. :csad:. Why I don't like living on East Coast. Hurricanes and tsnuami threat.

Just saw something on a military forum about some Navy ships have been moved out to sea in advance of the wave....

Wipe it out...????

It's not going to wipe it out.

Fox News are reporting that the water has receded from Long Beach....

A part of that is that it is low tide....
