The FACEBOOK Thread - Part 2

So some of my friends were having a discussion about this a while ago and I though it would be interesting to see what people here think. But basically, there's two questions: Who do you friend on Facebook?, and What's the fist thing you do when you're on someone's page?

For example, do you limit yourself to friending just people that you know and have spoken to, or do you include friends of friends, or people in your class that you may not really know all too well but see every now and then. Have you ever friended someone for romantic purposes, meaning you wanted to get to know them better before deciding to talk or ask them out?

And once you are friends with someone, do you through their entire profile (assuming they had it private) right away? Or do you just check certain things about their info?

To be honest,I REALLY miss the old Myspace. You could put gifs and animations on your profile and decorate it with all sorts of pics, and even decorate your background too.

That was one of the reasons why I didn't want to join MySpace and chose Facebook over it. I really liked how simple Facebook looked back then.

I just friend people I'm friend's with in real life. I don't feel like Facebook (or the internet in general for that matter) is a good way to really get to know someone, so I'm not interested in adding people I hardly know.

As for what I look at on a friend's page first, their wall and then their pictures if they're interesting ones.

Anyone else getting a small onslaught of their friends posting this crap about Facebook charging fees unless you copy their post into your status?

Facebook has definitely become more cluttered. They've made a lot of changes I don't like.

I've seen a couple. I can only imagine that there will be more on the way.

I use to waste so much time editing and tweaking my profile in the html section. Just when I would get it perfect myspace would change the layout. :cmad:

Does anyone else hate the new news feed? I don't know about you but I like to look at my feed in the correct order of time.

I've gotten used to it, but I don't like how they merged Top Stories and Recent Stories, and how suddenly someone commenting on a 3 year old picture makes it a Top Story.

i'm not a fan either

also, the newest update is kinda wonky on Opera sometimes

I'm not liking the new feed either...yet another example of fixing something that wasn't broken to begin with.

Facebook adding ads to its Ticker feed

http://www.cnn.com/2011/11/21/tech/social-media/facebook-ads-ticker/index.html

Facebook's Ticker, the fast-scrolling tote board of pretty much everything your friends are doing, is ready to start selling you stuff.

"Sponsored stories" -- in other words, posts that someone paid for -- reportedly will begin appearing in the feed in the top right corner of home pages.

A Facebook spokesman confirmed that changes are on the way.

"We recently made some changes to Facebook that help surface more engaging content, whether paid or organic, to people using Facebook," spokesman Andrew Noyes said in an e-mail. "With these changes, people may see a varying number of ads or Sponsored Stories alongside organic content. In testing, we've found this leads to more engagement with for both paid and organic content."

A marketing news website -- ClickZ -- reported this weekend that a Facebook spokeswoman said ads would begin appearing in the Ticker for some users Monday.

"Sponsored stories" have appeared on Facebook for some time, targeted to individual users based on their activities on the site. In some instances, they can be triggered by friends' activities -- say, if they "like" a particular brand's page.

Currently, they appear in the Ticker on the "canvas pages" of apps. Those are the pages you're on when you're playing a game or using some other app that needs its own page to run.

Weaving sponsored content into organically appearing posts is a trend that's been growing as sites look to cash in on their popularity. Story-sharing sites StumbleUpon and Digg already sprinkle sponsored ads among the stories they recommend to users. Twitter offers "sponsored tweets" and "promoted" trending topics -- a status that usually has to be earned by popularity alone.

The Ticker was one of the most discussed new wrinkles when a host of Facebook changes were rolled out in September. Critics called it distracting -- a constantly buzzing home for oversharing of the highest order. (The comparisons to Twitter's fast-moving updates, for better or for worse, are hard to ignore.)

But as with many Facebook changes, complaints died down in the weeks that followed as users either got used to the feature or entered a realm of quiet acceptance.

I don't really care about those ads, since I don't pay much attention to them anyway. This isn't something I'd give up Facebook for other social networking sites like Google+.

In Social Network, didn't Mark say he didn't want the site to have ads?

From what I recall, he does.
:sbr:
As for FB itself, I don't mind the ads really, but I do find it annoying how they decide to fiddle around with and add/change features (I dunno how many times they've reverted the Chat options back and forth this past year) constantly - instead of fixing glitches/lag errors, they decide to make it more laggy by including the Ticker (which I luckily don't have... yet, ha) and the upcoming Timeline.... Hopefully the lawsuit they've been going through with Timelines.com ends up in them scrapping the idea or atleast delaying it longer. I remember Facebook being rather enjoyable back in '07/'08, and now it just seems to be taken over by too many hands in the pot's brew (I think Tom from deceased MySpace has a play in it, lol).

The ads on Facebook have never really been in your face... I hope they stay like that. :)

I like it in a chronological order as well, so it tworked me when they went and merged the two and had the Feed end up in a random mess. I found out a way around that though - you simply create a "List" and add all of your friends/Pages you follow/like to get updated from onto it, and it'll show all those posts/statuses in chronological time order again. (I called my own News Feed [Most Recent] and have it shown on the left-hand column constantly to click and be updated properly). :cwink:

lol Luckily they're to the side and small, but I do recall a time when they used to have disgusting zit ads with peeps' faces all blemish-covered.

PALO ALTO, Calif. - Mark Zuckerberg's personal photos were leaked online after a Facebook user found a security loophole and breached the Facebook CEO's account, according to a number of reports Tuesday.

Personal photos of Zuckerberg and his girlfriend, Priscilla Chan, at home in the kitchen, relaxing with their dog, and celebrating with friends appeared on the internet.

In one image, Zuckerberg proudly holds a dead chicken by its feet. In another, he shows off a plate of fried chicken that he presumably cooked himself, as the computer genius who inspired the movie "The Social Network" has vowed to only eat meat from animals he killed.

Another photo shows Zuckerberg and Chan gazing at each other lovingly in the kitchen of his $7 million home. Yet another shows the couple excitedly opening the door for trick or treaters, and giving kids in costume their choice of candy.

Many of the photos show Zuckerberg playing with the couple's dog, Beast.

The private images were posted to the photo sharing website, Imgur.com.

According to reports, there is a loophole that allows Facebook users to access personal photos when they report an "inappropriate" profile picture.
