The Films of John Wayne

PIITTSBURGH (1942)

Starring John Wayne, Randolph Scott, Marlene Dietrich, Shemp Howard, and Louise Allbritton.

This take places during the 1920's, 30's, and 40's. Friends Pittsburgh Markham (John Wayne) and Cash Evans (Randolph Scott; Ride the High Country, Gung Ho!) mine coal, chase women, and fight side by side. One day they run into rich society woman Josie Winters (Marlene Dietrich; The Blue Angel, Witness For the Prosecution) who they both want. She shames them into trying to be more than just coal miners....so their rise to riches start. Pittsburgh bullies and roughshods everyone to get ahead, Cash is the friendly guy who tries to work everything out through negotiation. Pittsburgh becomes a multimillionaire mogul who loses all friends and family due to his ways and eventually loses his money when his enemies work at ruining him....Cash becomes a respected millionaire who when WWII starts hires hos old pal back to help him change his plants over to war materials production and to run them with him.

Unusual movie for Wayne in that he plays a total jerk who only learns his lesson when he hits rock bottom. This was a war propaganda film that tells everyone to forget their own petty grudges and pull together for the good of the country.

LADY FROM LOUISIANA (1941)

Starring John Wayne, Ona Munson, Ray Middleton, Henry Stephenson and Dorothy Dandridge.

In late 1800's New Orleans, General Anatole Mirbeau (Henry Stephenson; Captain Blood, The Charge of the Light Brigade) runs a lotto system. Unbeknownst to him. his right hand man Blackie Williams (Ray Middleton; 1776, Hurricane Smith ) is a crook using strongarm tactics to get people to buy tickets and not talk about it. Travelling from Washington DC to New Orleans, John Reynolds (John Wayne) and General Mirbeau's daughter Julie (Ona Munson; Gone With the Wind, The Shanghai Gesture) meet and start falling for each other...too bad he is the lawyer sent by Washington to clean up the town. Blackie secretly kills the general and gets Julie to be the figurehead of the organization. John tries relentlessly to shut it down but has difficulty because everyone is afraid of Blackie. Eventually Julie finds out the truth and turns states evidence....just in time for a hurricane to hit and burst a levee flooding New Orleans...and for John and Blackie to have a knock down drag out fight on a riverboat trying to survive the storm.

Not much worth your time unless you just want to be a Wayne completest. The movie has some racist moments with it's depictions of blacks.

Some trivia for Hypsters.....Ray Middleton was the first live actor to portray SUPERMAN....this was at the 1939 world's fair.

I was never a great fan of Wayne's western and war films. I though The Quiet Man was excellent, and also the comedies North to Alaska and Donovan's Reef.
