The 'Girl with the Dragon Tattoo' Franchise

I know it's easy to bag Sony over their creative decisions, but I wouldn't have done any different if I were a studio head. I was pulling for Fincher's version, and it just did not set the world on fire like it could have (I still think the original is better).

Considering how dead in the water the series was, this reboot is harmless. It can only improve the franchise (if it's good).

I'm not sure if I don't like Claire Foy in the role or how it is being done. She looks too much like a superhero in this, as opposed to an extraordinary woman who is exerting herself on a horrible world.

Also, I read this book, and this looks to change a lot, which is fine because unlike the Larsson books, it was a bit of a chore to read. But meh, I think the magic is kind of gone, and this doesn't look to hold a candle to the Rooney film, which unto itself wasn't as good as the Noomi films (IMO).

I'm more interested in the woman in red than Foy's version of Lisbeth.

It just doesn't make sense to me to make this when the 2nd and 3rd books haven't been adapted in English yet.

In fact it just seems pointless. Never read the 4th book as it wasn't Larsson, but I imagine they will have to change quite a bit?

Fincher not being able to complete the trilogy will be one of cinema's biggest disappointments for me. It is right there with Robert Duvall not being Tom Hagen in The Godfather Part III.

Agreed, I loved Finchers take on the first book and would have loved to see what he did with the 2nd and 3rd.

Really ?

I loved the book but I thought the Fincher's movie was just "OK", below average. The atmosphere and acting is great but the plot is so simplificated. I hate the way they change the ending. Overall it's just meh.

Jesus. You know Lisbeth ain't shaving her eye brows until the very last scene of this movie, as "tribute" to this woman in red to never forget her. Seems more of a studio excuse to keep the eye brows. It looks well directed at the most, but it just feels yet again like a cynical Sony job.

Not shaving... they were bleached in Finchers and the woman in red has bleached eyebrows too.

Oh, you're right! Never noticed that. Regardless, this just all comes off as a studio's attempt to water a character down. I don't mind the idea of a smaller, more character focused story with the more limited budget, but because this is Sony, I'm not getting my hopes up.

Totally agree. They made all the character growth happen off screen. It's so boring to me.
The superior Lisbeth look:

When something is at Fincher quality and it goes down to "fine", that feels like a massive drop to me. Especially when they got rid of a rather spectacular Mara. Though I don't think this looks fine. But that is just my opinion.

Next to Fincher most thrillers are just "fine". Which is why I dont typically expect any thing to come close to matching Fincher's films. So that drop was to be expected.

This looks very meh.

Fede Alvarez on why He Wanted to Recast Lisbeth.

There was a lot of debate — but not with me — mostly debate among the studio, if they [were] taking that route or not. Eventually, I think it was me coming in, saying, I preferred to have my own cast. As a director, I just didn’t like the idea of taking someone else’s cast. As much as I admired Fincher as a filmmaker I think Rooney Mara is Fincher’s Lisbeth, right? And I wanted to find my own.

They wanted to keep costs down hence why they went with Alvarez and a brand-new cast. They went for the cheap option. Simple.

This is exactly what happened with Mission:Impossible. Complete recast with each new director. Made perfect sense. Same for Harry Potter. It's why the Russos recast Cap, Shane Black Iron Man, Taylor/Waititi Thor, and Whedon everyone.

In what realm does this look good, especially with what came before?

I have no problem with Fede Alvarez wanting to cast his version from scratch.

On the one hand, I can respect a director wanting his on cast. On the other hand, when youre coming into a series that's already cast and off to a good start I think you should try to keep the cast that's there if the cast is good in the roles and if they want to return. Fede came in on a sequel and wanted to start over and do it his way. Well, if he wanted that he probably shouldn't have signed on for a sequel.

So I'm ok with the idea, but not the way it's been implemented here. Not the way Fede seems to have flippantly tossed out Rooney.

Alvarez can do better. This will be The Snowman 2.
One of the problems with The Snowman was that it was chopped up to the point that it was incomprehensible.
Whole sections of the film were removed.
That is not going to happen here.
