People are too harsh on the Robin character, admittedly, I can be at times too, but even I who can be a fan at times see this as a bad idea. It's a horrible idea for a replacement for Smallcrap.

If you use Nightwing, people will be expecting Batman, Gordon, etc updates and that messes with Nolan. Even before Nolan's Batman Begins,Birds of Prey said Batman was missing from the get go and Huntress hated him so she wouldn't go out and find him.

Not if you focus the series on Nightwing establishing himself in Bludhaven...

New city, new supporting characters. It would be all about Dick making it out on his own.

Of course, there will be references to Bruce, Gordon and Gotham City but with this approach, we don't necessarily need to see the Batman cast...

Barbara maybe, every now and then...

It appears the CW will be making a show about Dick Grayson and his family pre-Robin years. This could be interesting, or a total failure. While I really like the Robin character, specifically Richard Grayson, I don't think there's a lot to hold a show like this together without fudging up the characters history and canon (i.e. Smallville) Discuss.

The first whiff of this I got was a headline on Google Reader and I was actually excited about it until I read the whole story. Sadly, I have to agree with the concerns already mentioned in this thread. There's still a part of me that wants to keep an open mind and to play along with the show's creators, but the more I think about it, the smaller that part of me becomes. I guess it's remotely possible that the show could be awesome, but at this point I don't see that it will be anything more than a show about a kid in a family of acrobats (who, of course, has adventures). The fact that the kid is Dick Grayson seems irrelevant. From a story standpoint, I can't see that it makes any sense to make the main character Dick Grayson. I mean, I get it from a marketing standpoint, but just as far as the story goes, the reasoning eludes me.
If the show makes it on-air, I'll watch it, but this far out, I don't expect anything of value. :csad:

The Grayson's is probably the wost move the CW could do because really you can't do a series with Dick Grayson without having Batman/Bruce Wayne show up and all the series really can be about is life at the circus. I do understand though why they can't show him as Robin because you do have the Teen Titans movie still coming out and you have the WB pushing to have him in the next movie. I also see why they won't give Green Arrow a spin off because it looks like Supermax will happen and you can be sure that if it does BC will show up. But the problem is the CW is going to run into the same problem it did with Birds of Prey and that is you can't have a Batman show with none of its villains or Batman and Gordan. The only person who maybe can be on that show is Babs.

Heroes is fine, but JL is something else.
A CW JL would be viewed as a cheap immitation/or a cheap attempt to compete with something they won't be able to compete with.

Graysons is not the worst idea... but I mean really, who want to watch a show about a second string hero? Like when JLA/JLU was on, I dread the weeks when 'second string' heroes take the central position (although some were good), I'd much rather see the main DC superheroes.

give me a Flash or GL show, before a Robin show.

Dick is a great character, but I get the feeling he will end up being whatever he needs to be to work in the format. He'll have to be old enough to be in sexual relationships with girls, and have parents who've never been to the circus let alone work there, they'll probably put the family in some other city(as to avoid having to acknowledge Batman), and they already taken the first step to change is name since nobody is mature enough to say "Dick". A Nightwing show would rock though.

They shoulda gone with Nightwing. Period.

At least then they could have resorted to the "freak-of-the-week" formula and in the process worked in appearances by Bat-villains whom Nolan just wouldn't have the cajones to introduce in the films, for lack of any other non-embargoed Bat-references.

lol, nobody gives a damn about Robin AS Robin, and they think people are going to care about him even before those days, enough to watch a show about it?

Like i said earlier, HBO's Carnivale would be an awesome premise for a Robin series with a few modifications. Dick witnessed a crime but the mob is now after the unknown witness and they are on the run. The Graysons come across metahuman events every so often and there's an overarching mystery about what the person was killed for.

It's possible to make it interesting but I don't trust these writers to come up with it. And because it would need to be more mature than what the CW has shown.

+1

Maybe WB should hire you as a consultant.

This is pretty weak. Of all the potential replacement series they could've done with JLA, Supergirl, and Green Arrow that they've successfully kickstarted in Smallville, THIS is the one that they choose to do?

The huge problem with doing a pre-Robin Dick Grayson series is that he becomes the Boy Wonder when he's like 14-15 years old. I could possibly see the premise of a show if you had him actually becoming Robin in the show and centered it around him balancing his life as a crime fighter vs. that of a normal teen similar to what they did in Spider-man, but what the hell is he going to be doing in his pre-Robin days? Working at the circus and running home to watch Yu Gi Oh? My guess is that they're going to delay him becoming Robin until he's in his late teens or early 20's which basically defeats the point of ever making him Robin. At that point they should just skip Robin and have him go right to Nightwing.

This is wrong on all levels. I couldn't care less about a pre-pubescent Dick. There's jack all story there. If this goes to air I'm gonna spit the dummy.

Wow! I thought for sure we'd get a Green Arrow spin off or JLA with the characters from Smallville. Just wow! A pre-Robin series?! The thought alone is ridiculous.

Oh, dear God. "DJ Grayson?" Christ. I really don't need a Gotham 90210 ruining the already poor public opinion of one of my favourite characters. I can barely endure the consistently awful existence of Smallville; that philosophy applied to the Batman universe... that just scares the hell out of me. Smallville is garbage. I don't want a garbage Robin show.

A good series about Robin could probably kick ass. One about Pre-Robin Dick, though, would require him to be too young to carry a series. Having him as Robin wouldn't work without Batman, and then the series might as well be called "Batman." Nightwing is less tricky, but still tricky. This teenage not-Robin "DJ" Grayson is probably the worst avenue they could pursue.

God, don't say that stuff. You're making my nightmares reality.

This sounds beyond bad. I can take Smallville changing things around. But how are you going to get a show about Robin not being Robin? Plus he will be a teen in the show and how do they plan on going atleast 5 years without him ever becoming Robin?

Out of sooo many DC charecters to choose from, I have no idea why they went with this route.

wonder if will get a 30 year old dick grayson who hasnt become robin yet for eight seasons like clark kent on smallville

To make myself feel better, I think this will probably go the way of the other DC shows. Let's go down the list:

The Flash (about a time-traveling speedster), never had a pilot.
Starman for ABC. Never had a pilot.
Global Frequency. Never saw the pilot. Though it's out there supposedly.
Mercy Reef/Aquaman. Neat pilot, not picked up.

And what happened to the supposed Moon Knight? Or Ultra? Alter-Ego (Bendis' Alias comic with a different name)? Every single comic property that's been announced for TV in the past several years haven't gone ANYWHERE. Seeing this show's concept, I'd hope the same for this.

Except I think I jinxed it now. And McG has some pull in Warner Bros. Whoops.

who cares about his family years...this will not go well

Let's not count out the gay viewership! They chose not to use the name D I C K but instead go with DJ. With that name alone the gay viewership would have sent ratings through the roof!

Ugh.

This is beyond comment at this point. Did we ever get a link on this?

I'd love to know when Sounders and Peterson came up with their idea for this
take and if Dark Knights huge box office haul had anything to do with it .

I've allways been a Batman fan and for me I'd love to see a Nolan version of Robin ( which of course wont happen )

I'll check out the pilot though .
