The Weinstein Company has revealed the new trailer for The Great Debaters, directed by and starring Denzel Washington, and produced by Oprah Winfrey. Opening Christmas Day, the drama also stars Forest Whitaker, Jurnee Smollett, Denzel Whitaker, Kimberly Elise and Nate Parker.

Yeah, it's another "underdog black team shows they can hang with the upper class white rivals" flick, but Denzel's directing skills aren't too shabby. So I shall give it a look.

Awww... it's all heartwarming and stuff.

I'm like, heartwarmed, right now. Man.

Sounds like it's got an incredible backing, I might check it out.

Nope. It got smashed in between all the releases today. Sucks becaues Antwone Fisher was a good flick, and I'd like to see Denzel direct more. This just got obliterated in the holiday blockbuster arena.

I'm completely off my movie viewing schedule.
I hope to regain it next year.

It's a shame, because the movie is definitely of Oscar and Golden Globe-caliber. It's messed up that most of the audiences would rather see stuff like AVP-R or P.S. I Love You or something... :p

Roeper and what's-his-name didn't have a single bad thing to say about it.

Now you've made me feel bad. :csad: My goal is to see it on Monday. :yay:

I can imagine you and the 3-4 other blacks on the Hype will check it out.

putting a smiley on that doesn't make it any less offensive and rude, you have been warned Arkady, about these negative, US/Black posts.

I wonder...

when was it ever claimed that a movie like this shouldn't be among any other historical dramas? Just because Blacks make up the majority of the cast, that should not designate the majority of the viewers. Why are viewers of other races constantly being intimidated by movies such as these?

Saw it. Liked it.

Wasn't mind blowing or anything...just a solid flick.

And I knew nothing about this little slice of American history...

The movie left me emotionally drained, in a good way. I had tears all the way through. I tell ya I was close to full on weeping, I had to compose myself.
I knew going in that is was going to be some intense subject matter and all too real. I was really hoping I wouldn't see
Anyone hanging:(

Really outstanding casting.

the movie is already profitable at $22 million receipts-- Denzel, Forrest, etc. took pay cuts to make it happen.. it should still have good momentum, going into Black History Month-- February--

the Weinsteins should consider pushing it into more theaters.. always underestimating..

When you see that, it just pisses you off, even if it is in the past. Like, one of my family members had to witness and/or have that done to them.

How come this movie wasn't called "The Master Debaters?"

that'll be the porno version later.
i have no desire whatsoever to see this movie. its been done to death already. its a typical denzel/ oprah book club movie.

^It's been done to death? A movie about the first black debate team?

It was a great, inspirational film, imo. Denzel did a great job, and so did the cast. It was very inspirational and it's a great film for schools and church groups to see (I saw it at a screening with multiple minority youth organizations).

The [blackout]hanging scene[/blackout] was explicit and disturbing, but for good reasons in how it tied into the ending. Some may think its been "done to death" but like said above, the story on this african american debate team has never been done (I think). It focused on a team that went on to debate Harvard. I was actually close to tears during the final debate.

no these inspirational films in general. since stand and deliver, rudy (although i did like that one), remember the titans, radio, the swim team one, etc, etc, etc. there seems to be one out every movie season now. not that they may or may not be good movies, for me it just gets old after the 7th one in a year.

The world needs inspirational films, imo. It may seem cliched, but there's a population of people that need to be inspired.
