The Great Debaters - Trailer

^It's been done to death? A movie about the first black debate team?

Hmmm...I can't say for certain if they were the first black debate team or not but the movie wasn't about that. They were debating other black teams, after all...

If you guys liked Jurnee Smollett as Samantha Booke you should see her when she was just a kid in Eve's Bayou, if you haven't already. I loved Bayou and was really impressed with Jurnee then. :yay:

^^Yeah that was a very slept on movie. There hasn't been anything like it since. Kasi Lemmons directed that and she also directed "Talk to me" with Don Cheadle. Talented lady.

that'll be the porno version later.
i have no desire whatsoever to see this movie. its been done to death already. its a typical denzel/ oprah book club movie.

At least if they called it "The Master Debaters" they would have gotten some attention, particularly from late-night-comedians (well, not with the strike going on unfortunately, which is another problem).

The world needs inspirational films, imo. It may seem cliched, but there's a population of people that need to be inspired.
but that's just it for me. once it becomes cliche' it stops being inspirational and just becomes cliche'

Also, it's kind of hard to get excited about a movie that's about a debate team. It's like if they did it about a chess team or something. Most people think that stuff like the debate team and chess team is yawn-worthy when they're in school, which is why it's always stuff like sports and music that people make movies out of.

Just saw the trailer for the flick. Ugh. I have never seen a more cliche trailer. From the music to the voice-over to the quasi-slow-mo scenes of the actors smiling. And I already know how this movie's gonna play out aswell. Ooh, how I detest this entire sub-genre. I can't watch these movies. I really can't.

Yeah, the "inspirational drama" has become quite a cliche. I'm sure that this one is well made, but it just doesn't seem like anything other than white noise (which is ironic, since it's a movie about a black debate team).

glad to know there are at least 2 others that share my opinion

The movie was alright... Nothing too special, but some good performances by Whitaker and Washington... Definitely not good enough for the Best Movie of the Year nomination at the Golden Globes...

I just saw this movie. How could I have missed this before? I loved it through and through... cliche/overdone... whatever... it's a great flick.

Jurnee Smollett

Kudos to Whitaker... he always shines.
